The moderators recently announced a site redesign for Candlekeep within this thread.

Since that thread shows that some scribes wish to dicuss this topic and the moderators do not wish additional posts within the above thread, I decided to create this topic.

Perhaps the moderators will articulate what changes are to be expected.

Will they be seeking user feedback?

I don't know although they do ask for suggestions within the linked thread.

Has any scribe mentioned changes they wish to see to the site designers?

I prolly will, as soon as I come up with something more concrete than "thinks I that this section could stand to be reorganized."

I will be looking forward to the changes, especially where we can converse one on one via the chatroom, instead of multi-scroll postings.

Many of those changes, new stuff, looks real tasty. I was thinking of something I wanted to see, but I forgot it for now. Probably nothing important I guess :-)

Will the forum undergo any changes as well?

Well met

Nothing is currently set in stone as to what is involved in the "replastering" of Candlekeep.

The library WILL, however, be more interactive and easier to navigate. The menu system, for example, will allow access to all areas, rather than just sections. Hover Pop-up's will appear over section links to describe what type of material is included therein.

Most material will be populated from databases. Thus eliminating the need for manual page creations. The forms on the site will also be much smarter and we will also allow registered approved users the ability to update and send their campaign journals etc. online to update dynamically, rather then send in via email and wait for an update, as happens currently.

Generally, the place will look different and be much tidier.

As for the forum, it may not change much at all. It seems to be working just fine, so if it aint broke..... ..and no, we haven't ruled out sections to discuss other campaigns

The chat room will feature a general tavern-style chat as well as online campaign areas. We will likely move the Candlekeep Inn over to that area.

Bear in mind, though, that this will be a lengthy process and certainly wont happen overnight. There is a LOT of material already here in Candlekeep, all of which will have to be converted and incorporated into the new design. Doing that, along with keeping up with new periodic updates is a great task. So please be patient.

We certaintly welcome your suggestions for improvements and new ideas either on this topic or via email.

Well, we have no advise for any of this... but as for the... replastering of Candlekeep, We wish those involved good luck in their work... Not something we would wish on even our enemies heads. Let's just hope the entire keep doesn't come crashing down on our heads

I've seen some references/tentative questions on Non-FR stuff to be included on the site... With all the complaining done in the various forums that WotC is spending most of their attention to something else than FR is it wise to potentially fall into a similar trap?

I'm sure there are sites already dedicated to the non-FR worlds, including the brand new one sanctioned by WotC. For me it would suffice that Candlekeep has links to those sites/forums and doesn't get actively involved in discussing the matter.

To me Candlekeep is Forgotten Realms and not a collection of all kinds of RPG worlds...

Your reasoning is well founded Mumadar, and for what it is worth, I agree with you...to an extent.

I'd like to think that, if and when such a forum for alternate setting discussion does open here at Candlekeep, Alaundo and the other staff scribes will establish some very firm rules for posting right at the outset. The main problem with the WotC boards is the size of it's community. There are well over 100,000 forum users over there...something that is unlikely to happen here, at least in the foreseeable future.

Candlekeep's community base is still relatively small when compared to the populations of other forums, and the section in question is unlikely to see any more use other than when specific Realms discussion sometimes spills over into the arena of other settings. Which, as we all know is the one main cause of off-topicness here at Candlekeep -- the non-FR forum will handle that spill-over.

In any event, if this non-FR forum does see the same abuse which has been demonstrated over at WotC, I'm sure that no scribe will dispute Alaundo's decision to close it in favor of protecting Candlekeep.

Let's just see what happens shall we...?

couldn't resist
Of course time will tell, but why potentially invite that potential disaster? Keeping the door open will for sure let the monster in...

I was not in particular referring to the WotC forums as locales to discuss worlds other than FR. I'm sure there are 'fan-based' forums out there in internet-land that sort of resemble the FR-forums on Candlekeep.

I agree that references and comparissons to the other RPG worlds cannot be avoided, and neither is heavy-handed moderation required. Advertising and subtly re-directing conversations on these non FR-topics to those forums could help reduce the 'clutter' on Candlekeep to a (necessary?) minimum.

Dedicating a section of Candlekeep to these discussions is not necessary when these other forums do exist - and scribes who like to discuss these topics can always do so off-board as not to ditract thir fellow scribes from the more important FR-work.

Well met

Worry not, Mumadar Ibn Huzal, that very matter has been my concern for some time now...ever since the suggestion was first mentioned, in fact. After all, as you say, this is a library of the Realms and should not be tainted with other worlds.

I do, however, try to keep all scribes happy, but my primary concern is the sharing and collection of Realmslore. Any discussion areas of other worlds will be seperate to this paricular area (which is what is taking the time to do).

Candlekeep itself will remain Realms-only, other locales can be visited for lore on other worlds, there is no place on our shelves for the likes of non-Realms material.

In a nutshell, IF this comes about, other world areas will merely be categories in a seperate forum similar to this (hopefully allowing database sharing for member details - allowing you to sign into both forums with the same details). It all gets very complicated, I need to lie down

Is this like planes walking or would it include transportation to another sphere

I agree with JP, and Sage, that the forum should be clear of non FR material as much as possible.

I admit that when i heard 'bout the changes i feared too that this Library could lose its identity, we know that places like this aren't common or even easy to find, believe me, in spain the Realms Lore is no popular, so i was glad when i found Candlekeep.

Anyway i'm sure Alaundo and the rest of the WB know what are they doing and how are they doing.

So we should just be patient.
