"The Glass Prison" is a novel from 1999 by Monte Cook. It is a standalone novel, which is often also a good way to get your read-fix if you donīt want to sink yourself into a series.
So, what do we get here? The novels protagonist is the cambion Vheod Runechild who escapes the Abyss after years of abuse. He meets some companions and is caught in the middle of a conspiracy where he plays a crucial role.
The story focusses on his search for his destiny and how to cope in Toril. The author did well to make the reader sympathethic with Vheod as he questions his world view and that acting like in the Abyss(so, by force, Chaotic Evil) is not the best way on Toril.
The heroes also visit some interesting places like an ancient big tree filled with ravens and there is also plenty of fighting the baddies. Characters are also well-designed enough to keep the reader going. And in the end there is a worthy final battle.
While the theme of the guy from an evil background becoming a hero is not entirely new, "The Glass Prison" is a worthwhile read and itīs too bad it is the only FR novel by Monte Cook. He definitely has talent to write a captivating story. Would recommend it!
