Other than the obvious Undermountain, what locations on Toril would fit the bill of a massive megadungeon that would be appropriate for a crawl where there is really no plot, just wandering and killing monsters/collecting treasure? To be honest, the less backstory that you'd have to incorporate, the better, because I'd like to take some players on a wild romp with a truly old school feel. There are published megadungeons out there that I'd like to be able to just shoehorn in (Rappan Athuk for one).
Maztica has Mount Zatal, but oddly, my players aren't anywhere near that part of the world at the moment.

I would think that any large dwarven location that has long been abandoned (by the dwarves) would work. Tethyamar in the Desertmouth Mountains, Gauntulgrym in the North, or Lost Sarbreeen under Ravens Bluff could all work. |

Ah yes. I feel like Wotc hasn’t visited Ravens Bluff in quite some time. |

Mithril Hall, Gauntlgrym, the Haunted Halls of Eveningstar, the Dungeon of the Crypt, Hellgate Keep, the Mines of Tethymar, Oreme, Ascore,Oghrann, Ironfang Keep, Castle Perilous, Dungeon of Death, Dragonspear,Thunderholme and Stardeep.
And to say the Realms has a couple of ruins around is a huge understatement..... |

I was gonna say, the Haunted Halls of Eveningstar - we don't know how deep that dungeon goes since Ed has only detailed the levels closest to the surface, but it definitely goes deeper.
If you're looking for content to shoehorn in, I'd also suggest the Pathfinder megadungeon The Emerald Spire, especially since Ed Greenwood designed level 3 (I think it was level 3 at least) of it.
The Emerald Spire would fit well in the Border Kingdoms as a lost redoubt of one of the creator races. I'd suggest the Batrachi. |
When life turns it's back on you...sneak attack for extra damage.

So they're just maps, and most of them are single levels... But there are some linked maps of multilevel dungeons, others can be easily linked, and they're all free.

Seconding Tim Hartin's work at Paratime Design. His maps are solid, and I love the old school aesthetic.

Currently living in a version of 1372DR that operates under 5e mechanics. Strange indeed! |
