With The Year of Rogue dragons upon us I am curious to know if there has been any reference to Faerun's 'total dragon population' ever printed. I know the 2E Draconimicon cited specific worms of Toril, but what I am wondering is if it or any book has printed the average population for Dragon-kind, either by species type, or an Estimated Total Number of Dragons of Faerun (A sort of dragon census if you will). If not can any of the fellow sages here make an educated guess?
Are numbers dwindling? Increasing? Remaining the same?
And on the subject of dragons, I would like to ask of anyone possessing the 3E Draconomicon, if it has any relevant (i.e. Realms Specific) info for Faerun at all?
thanks in advance

I can't answer anything but the last one. It's a yes, because it's only things to do with dragons. I'd say it's easy to mesh with any campagin that has any draconic aspects. |

Thanks Bookwrym, but regarding the 3E Draconomicon what I mean to ask is are there specific "realms related" entries. Similar to the back of the Epic Levels Handbook where Epic Level entries were given for NPC of Faerun. Is there any such simlar mention (either history, stats, or anything) or is it all just general "multi-purpose" crunchie stuff? |

-The exact numbers of dragons in the Realms is not now, nor will it ever be, known, at least not by mortals (though DMs can add more as they see fit). They must be sufficient in number as to forever menace the continent, mysterious enough in quantity as to never have been hunted into extinction, and are powerful enough that their numbers can replenish in a few centuries (though it is not the case that this replenishment actually taks place). My guess for the total number of dragons in Faerūn is "however many it takes to keep the campaign vital."
-The Draconomicon has updated entries for the fang and shadow dragon varieties (both native to Faerūn, and described in Monsters of Faerūn), as well as half-dragon varities for the brown, deep, fang, shadow and song dragons (all from FR). Other than that, however, there is no FR-specific material, and even these monster entries are taking something from the Realms and making it more generic, not the other way round. |

I'll also add to that that the book isn't all krunchie. It's got some wonderful fluff on dragons, making me wonder how it slipped out of WotC. |

Thanks for the info on the sourcebook Garen Thal & Bookwyrm, given its listed price I think I will hold off on it for a while.
Yes I know the 'exact' number is not known. But I would argue that any sage on dragons (or perhaps a group of sages working together) worth his weight in salt could feasibly (via various divination magics and other expensive research) get that information (maybe not the exact numbers but close to it). And I am not looking for an exact figure myself. But Dragons do have their own ecology and based on that they have to live with the surrounding ecologies of Faerun (and now with treasure hunting adventures and Cult of the Dragon fanatics running more rampant than ever). So if no factual figures are printed, then what I am looking for is educated guesses.
Are their numbers in the hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, millions?
Is their population larger now than say during the time of the Creator Races or during the era of Netheril?
Sure as a DM I can make up any figure I like, but I am not knowledgeable enough about all things realms to do so myself. And I dislike pulling figures out of my posterior without any basis.

I'd say it would have to be in the hundreds. After all, you're not bumping into them in every cave. And I would say they've declined since Netheril, though they might have just reached population replacement. Certainly they wouldn't have risen. |

Mr Boyd, you may want to remove that full stop at the end of the URL to the mist dragon you just presented. It causes a null link and leads you to the WotC main site.

I've an idea for Dragons of the East, myself... But as yet, it's only a rough idea, and I need to get the Draconomicon so I can do the stats... |

George, if you need help with the 3e rules side of things, I humbly extend my help...And I should probably start working on the ideas of my own. |

That's great . I know that the Lady Kazandra also has some ideas she's been wanting to work on as well. If there's one thing she did alot of while confined to her bed resting...it's thinking... She also read through three of my other FR sourcebooks in one tenday period... I've started jokingly calling her "the Lady Sage"...

Well, the idea still needs work -- it's rough right now (in fact, all I have is this very rough concept). I need to do some research in various sources, find a name, and polish it up some... I've no idea when I'll have the extra cash for the Draconomicon, so if you could help with the stats side of things, that would be great. |

Excellent .
As it happens I'll have my copy of the Draconomicon close at hand over the next few weeks anyway (for campaign purposes) so I'll be glad to help out.

Hi.
What is this project, may I ask? I love dragons and if this is a list of homemade dragons of the East, then I have some of my own.
Or, if you are doing a compilation of canon dragons of the East (was that a series of articles like Wyrms of the North, then?) then I have a comprehensive of known (and either living or undead) dragons of Faerūn in general, with some from the East, which I could send.
Any help I can provide, is yours! |

Obviously not.... It doesn't really matter anyway, because she suits the title well .

It's a project started by our own Lady Kazandra. She's hoping to pick up where the WotC Wyrms of the North series of articles finished. Both the Lady and Dargoth were responsible for the creation of this idea, and since that time has picked up some momentum. Just visit the link, it should tell you what you need to know about what's happening so far .
