I got a weird thought, and I figured I'd throw it up here for feedback
So, we've all seen ideas like someone taking a dragon's horn and turning it into a hunting horn (i.e. a horn you blow through to relay signals) or even turning it into like a musical horn. However, a dragon's horn would be a rare find. Are there any "low grade" monsters that someone can think of where after its dead... someone might look at it and go "hmmm, I can use that and make a musical instrument"? I'm picturing something where it might be generic enough that whatever component becomes used to make THIS type of instrument (for instance, in our world, cat gut was used to make violin strings for a long time).

Well bones have been used as whistles or flutes. Also could be used for things like harps or others that need a frame for string instrument.
Clearly tendons or other parts used as strings.
Frames and strings are the easiest to see, the winds take a little more time. On further thought all of them would take time. to ready, just in different ways.
I do not see most adventurers looking at a defeated goblin and seeing that the third rib is just what is needed to complete a harp. However those that make instruments might see more with a skill, to use what is not readily seen.
A giant's head might be a good for a kettle/large drum. If you are looking for creature to musical instrument (like dragon horn) I do not have a quick answer. |

I was thinking more of "creature"... I know this doesn't work, but thinking like .... stirge head... its a low level creature that most everyone kills. Similar things like that. |

Hmmmm, rereading what Kentinal said above though... the idea of repurposing some "large" creature's head to make drums.... I think that could actually work. Giants might be rare, but an ogre's head is probably twice the volume of a humans, and ogres aren't exactly rare.
Thinking of that though.... large creature's teeth from multiple creatures might make different sounds... maybe a xylophone type creation from teeth?
Going back to the stirge idea, do you this a stirge proboscis could be turned into like a flute?
Is there any particular creature you can think of that would make you go "yeah, bagpipes out of that make total sense". |

Any leathery skin of a small to medium monster would make for a good bagpipe, just replace the open spaces where the legs and neck would have been with the wooden pipes and there you (bloody) go.
A large carapace, such as that of a ankheg or umberhulk, could make for a nice oversized resonance box for a lute worthy of a an audiance by a firegiant kings side.
I once had an encounter spiced up by the haunting windy sounds of a windwheel made of a huge pearl-shell, hippogriff and griffin bones and feathers. |
