In 2e it seemed these creatures had a presence that was growing for a time. They were in the Monstrous Compendium 11 which was dedicated to FR creatures and then had some scenarios in the FR specific Book of Lairs.
Then, silence for decades.
Has anyone done anything with them? Where exactly do they exist? According to the Book of Lairs, they seem to come into conflict with each other relatively frequently.

One of the problems with the constant flow of monster books is that some monsters inevitably get forgotten as editions change. |

Unfortunately true, but I think such is the case for lore, regions...etc. I guess in the end it just makes for more ideas for homebrew. I liked these guys from what I remember. Pleasant memories of getting the Book of Lairs as a Christmas gift as a child and my eyes were drawn to the sha'az illustrations for their weirdness alone. Furry snow spider people that are kind of prone to decency? I'm going to offer my players one using the sidekick rules I think soon.

I gave them some love for the FRW recently: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Haun https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Haundar https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Sha'az
The hauns got a brief mention in the Class Chronicles articles, but there's no 3.5 update that I could find. http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frcc/20070627
I liked these three creatures. A lot of monsters exist in a virtual vacuum, with little connection to anything else. They can be put in or taken out without affecting much. Yet the sha'az, hauns, and haundars are interrelated in their own small ecosystem: the hauns parasitise the haundars and prey on sha'az eggs to aid them, the sha'az hunt the haundars and fight off the haun, so they come together and compile a story.
It's pity we still don't know where in the Realms they exist. My best estimate for the wiki articles was the Great Glacier, or possibly the Reghed Glacier. |

This is very helpful, had no idea about the class chronicles bringing them back up.
Kind of reminds me though, sadly, how much history and lore has a psionic component to it and how that will really put it on a back burner unless psionics gets the update it deserves.
I find the Monster Manuals treatment of psionic creatures to be ... lacking? |
