The Sword Coast Guide is a good start, but have there been any rumors even of a full fledged 5E Campaign Setting yet?

No, I wouldn't expect one. The designers want a free hand to come up with stuff around Faerun.

Yes, some of us would want it, because we're not automatically against everything WotC does. |

It would be great to see what is going on in the other areas of the Realms. |

Wotc is in a tough bind... A full 5E setting revamp must automatically support/validate previous edition lore or must automatically ignore/invalidate previous edition lore. Which is problematic because the previous edition (4E) was so poorly received. 5E seems to be a "compromise" edition which has something for everyone and is meant for everyone, it's not smart for it to assert any sort of strong stance which fragments the fanbase. |

Well, they weren't concerned about fragmenting the fanbase, before.
And honestly, there's nothing they can do that won't fragment the fanbase. Undoing the changes of the 4E era pisses off those fans -- but leaving them canon pisses off the people that didn't like the changes.
Hell, there are still people here who dislike the Avatar Crisis.
Given that there is no way forward that avoids pissing people off, they should just say the hell with it and commit, one way or the other, instead of doing the vague "maybe it's changed and maybe it isn't" routine they're doing now.
If adhering to prior canon is so difficult for them, they should just reset the clock. Have some time-traveling adventure that resets everything to 1 day after the OGB, or something -- then they can go back to one simple amount of lore, and build again, maybe this time taking things in a new direction.
It'll never happen, but neither will them doing something without pissing off someone and creating more splinters in the fanbase. |

I for one would be really satisfied if some regions just got 1e/2e style individual updates. A new “Old Empires” for example. If WotC put out a DMsGuild contest or request and “canonized” the best I’d bet fans could really come up with awesome stuff. It wouldn’t cost them a dime and would be all profit. Then after a time, give us a brand new GhotR to summarize it all and voila, the Realms are up to date and ready for a new generation.
I mean, there are legions of adult fans still who are talented and passionate. Why not give them an opportunity to become part of history in a win-win scenario?

I think we are at a point where we don't get sassy to do it, we get sassy and do it.
This board is a shining example of very creative people coming up with some truely outstanding ideas.
It doesn't really matter to me whether they come up with an official version of the realms as it is probably the most detailed fictional world in existance and part of the fun is figuring out how we can use them in our own stuff.
That being said, I would consider it an honor if they finally decided to do it and we got credit and/or payment for our outstanding contributions. :) |

The SCAG is the closest thing we have to a campaign setting at this point. |
