As Dran was a red dragon, perhaps they were Tiamat worshippers? Cult clerics were generally at the time worshippers of Shar, Cyric, Talos (Salvarad the level 20 Priest of the Saerloon cell pretended to worship Talos but worshipped Cyric and Shar, for instance).
