Department of Belated Realmslore Replies Again: back on Feb 28th, Justin @Justins4wd asked me:

The grand history of the realms mentions Gorathil a creature from the Lower Planes that attacked the halflings of Marrduin on Orlumbor in the Year of the Amber Hulk 310 DR.

Think you could give some context on Gorathil?

Sure. Gorathil is the “Amber Hulk” Augathra the Mad foretold of in her Roll of Years, and was a Lycosidilith (tanar’ri demon) of amber hue (but black, furry legs and underbelly) and unusually large size, a six-legged spyder-fiend with a wolf-like head, four additional arms projecting from his neck, and a small barbed tail ending in a paralyxing-venomed sting (that Gorathil is himself immune to).

Some sages have described Gorathil as a Herald of Miska. He definitely served the Prince of Demons, Miska, who was the ruler of all spyder-fiends, but Elminster warns that his precise title and rank is speculative. He was summoned to Toril in a botched ritual by a cabal of ambitious Calishite mages who intended to use him as their terror-assassin in a bid for rulership of Calimshan, but they hid away on Orlumbor to work their fell magic, and when they brought Gorathil to Toril, he slaughtered them first, then rampaged through the local halfling settlement of Marrduin ere commandeering a ship and forcing its crew to sail to the mainland, where they put into either a harbor or a river-mouth (survivors’ accounts differ as to exactly where), and fled over the side, abandoning their ship to the fiend. The sailors all say they saw the ship burning (“flames roaring to the skies”) but believe Gorathil set it afire and then went ashore. After that, his whereabouts and fate are unknown; he could well lurk in Faerűn still.
