Relph's Rich Men "Splurging and smiting apace since 1361DR." Local adventuring fellowship, easily identified by their matching "frills-and-swirls" ensembles. Still led by the disgraced and disowned noble Relph Estelmer (lean, purring, dangerous), though "Honeycoin" Haunglander (as sadistic as he is garrulous) is their spokes-blade these days. Prefer an urban playground, will not entertain wilderness runs or ruined stonedelves (excepting the Undermountain).
Renthos (LG HM War/P of Oghma) Former captain of the House Anteos armsmen. Lover of stage and drama. Wavy brown hair, warm brown eyes. More belly than brawn these days. Still walks with a rapid gait (almost a trot). Lord Dulbravvan relieved him of his duties and had him escorted to the street after the Anteos villa was burgled by the infamous Scarlet Knave. Served in the Watch for a time until he caught the eye of Enguth Ohrlaern, the Under-Loremaster of Oghma, during an Olamnite performance of the tragedy "Daeron of Starsfall." Currently serving as a doorward and initiate at the Font of Knowledge.
The Respectable Number Secret Society. Their ranks are mostly commonfolk and lesser tradesmen. Take their name from a saying made famous by the mage Ahghairon, "A respectable many in number" (used to remind the nobles of Waterdeep that just because a majority of nobles and guildmasters want something doesn't mean the more-populous dissenters among the citizenry can be ignored, time and time again, without consequences). Thoroughly infiltrated by both the Red Sashes and the Xanathar, both of whom use the group for their own rabblerousing purposes.
Rhelravvan the Sage A known Sage of the city (Major: humankind: philosophy & ethics, sociology; Minor: demihumankind: laws & customs). Author of Candle-Mutterings (1352DR). "Wizards must not be slain out of hand; for where else in Faerūn would we look to for such vast amusements?"
Rhembrul Northblood A hero of the North. First true-man (not tainted by goblinoid or demi-kind blood) to traverse the impossible heights of the Spine of the World. Died to the Black Horde, during the last assault over the battlements of Waterdeep. His deadly, crimson-edged scimitar (Angūrash, "The Last Rim of of the Sinking Sun") was lost and never recovered during this time, and is believed to lie today in one of the countless orc-holds across the Savage Frontier.

Selūndra the Fortunate Formerly Selūndra Hawkwinter, of noble House Hawkwinter. The initiate and companion of the senior Tymorite Tazendra the Twice-Blessed. Forced to remain in Waterdeep when the latter was "sent abroad" by the high priestess Seenroas Halvinhar. Auburn hair. Perpetually-squinty eyes in a broad, open face. Ample bust, ample belly. Sweet-voiced.
Selūne the Great Portender An aspect of the deity favored of diviners and seers and those who read the stars seeking knowledge of the future and the past. Attended by her celestial servants which travel the Great Sea of Night searching the void for the Great Game of Meanings and Portents, and only reveal themselves to Faerūn during times of great crisis or opportunity (the comets known as Asshak the Flanged, Tarnra the Bright, and Red-Roaring Gommur). Her adherents are relatively few, but use the flail, cat-o-nine-tails, izaqlar (trailing star-tail) flowers or a nine-tailed belt as signs of their faith.
Selūne Storm-Haggard That pale waif who was blown to and fro by Auril and Talos during the bleakest depths of Ches. Came upon the home of Durnhas the Woodsman, thin and snow-fringed and clad only in the fleeting wisps of the night clouds. An aspect of the new moon of Ches, when the last homely dregs of the granaries and cellar stores of the winter are opened and parceled to those who need, much as the last thin bowl of soup was given to the goddess in her penury. Holy Order: Sisters of the New Moon; their symbols are the Dull Lanthorn and The Ladle (one pale as the crescent moon, the other shaped in imitation of it). They staff Selūnite poorhouses, hard-night houses and orphanages.
Selūnjha The Red She-Devil. An infamous martialist at the Field of Triumph. Named for her vibrant red tresses, fiery temper, and the copious amounts of crimson "beast blood" she is ceremonially doused in after a winning bout. Fights with twin curving shortswords. Has a long-running blood feud with her fellow grimshield Sulfagha "The Southern She-Devil." The feud's petty origins lie in nothing more than each woman's pride and the tenuous commonality of their appellations, but it has grown into frequent tavern-wide brawls involving the supporters of both sides.
Sulfagha al Tulmazzar The Southern She-Devil. A native of Calimshan and martialist at the Field of Triumph. Has a long-running blood feud with her fellow grimshield Selūnjha "The Red She-Devil." The feud's petty origins lie in nothing more than each woman's pride and the tenuous commonality of their appellations, but it has grown into frequent tavern-wide brawls involving the supporters of both sides.
Sendrail Slartheer Nasal-voiced. Has one staring black eye, the other milky white from a long-ago sickness. Proprietor of Sendrail's Wondrous Weft ("linen, huckaback, camlet, sailcloth and masterful weavings of all varieties"), The Street of Curtains, Dock Ward.

Silver Lea (CN HF Bar3/F9) (LEE, not Leia) A silver-haired barbarian adventuress (and rumored Ruathymaar princess) famed in the wilderlands of the North. Restless, impatient. Broad shoulders, muscular arms and an impressively hard, flat physique. Has curious geometric-style markings on her upper right arm which may be a tattoo of the constellation Labraen (The Archer) or may be a smattering of acid scars. Legendary for wading through fierce winter storms and pitched battles alike, swinging her sword and clad in little more than patchwork chainmail armor, boots of the north, and bracers of defense.
"Silverfin" Selzimmer Sly, intelligent and well-mannered. Bushy, upswept eyebrows and a large toothy mouth, always smiling sometimes in humor, sometimes in veiled menace. His hair is shot through with a dense shock of silver, the source of his nickname. A trade factor for House Cassalantar. Active in both Lord's Court and less polite circles.
"Silverfin" Shuldun Street peddler. Old, balding and bony. Not quite deaf, but exceedingly hard of hearing. Gaines his name from his wares, a push-cart of silverfin slices served on hardbread and white cheeses. Roams the High Road in Trades Ward, very knowledgeable about the people and places of the Ward. A member of the Red Sashes.
The Simple Swords of Selūne Did not draw the favor of Selūne, though they greatly desired her deific attention. Lost into the caverns that echo far under Nesmé (where crawling carpets of scarlet hoarfrost blanket the walls and burn coldly underfoot, and crimson things that look horribly man-shaped hungrily shamble). Took with them the Quinqueangled Flange (a flanged mace +2; on a nat.20 hits as a 3d6 charge from a ring of the ram) wielded by their spokesman, the Silvaerran warrior hight Agate Agalar.
Skiddlebones (CE HM Bar2/P6 of Talona) Severely deformed by the cursed magics of an angry wizard. Turned to the worship of Talona and found himself well rewarded. Had the unblinking eyes of a fanatic and surprising strength in his scarred, open-sored limbs. Often accompanied by The Ghastly Ones, a gang of hooded wererat street urchins. His operations in South Ward clashed with the expanding reach of the Xanathar, and he met his doom in battle with the Knights Errant adventurers and thugs under the command of Naelzaur "The Dragon."

Gharakin "Green-Bones" (NE HM T2/P4 of Talona) Proprietor of the Sign of the Red Boot. Long, dark, greasy hair and long bony fingers. Shifty, narrow, dark eyes. His appellation comes from the sickly yellow-green pallor of his skin. The Boot is a damp, musty flophouse located in one of the worst South Ward neighborhoods. It's major occupants are fleas and various down-on-their-luck thieves, smugglers, and other unsavory characters.
The Ghastly Ones A gang of hooded wererat street urchins once active in Dock and South Wards. They were formed from the remnants of the wererat guild broken by Watch forces under the command of Chuldroon Sunspear. Led for a time by the mad priest of Talona known as Skiddlebones. Their strength was finally broken in back-alley battle with the combined forces of the Xanathar and the Knights Errant adventurers, with the few survivors fleeing to the warrens of the Rat Hills.
Ghemmer Ulanther (LN HM Abj) The Mage of Many Wardings. Casts magical wards, signs, and sigils for a fee. Wide of girth, with a bald head and a wide red moustache. Ghemmer rents an opulently-furnished office in Castle Ward just outside the Palace. His clients include many rich merchants and lesser nobility. Also does brisk business laying and re-laying magical protections on the safeholds and "strongdarks" of city moneylenders. These services, as well as most of his dealings with the nobility, are vouchsafed by the temples of Sune and Tyr, which hold quantities of his blood and hair in reserve to guarantee there is no unscrupulous behavior (like intentionally faulty wardings or "backdoor" pass-codes) in his castings.
Ghirgatha Proprietor of Ghirgatha's (Golden Den), a heavily-curtained and -carpeted parlor where customers recline on pillow and divan and inhale deeply of scented, numbing vapors, similar to the languor-dens of the Thayans or the smokegilds of the Calishites (west-side Murlpar Street, Sea Ward "ghosts of sweet days gone long ago, reveries stirred in the blood; a voyage back to the lands of vanished dreams"). A nimble old woman, circumspect and serene. Dark-skinned, thin. Wears her frizzy, wavy hair dyed garishly and combed back into fantastic coronas. Knows the intimate details of every one of her customers, enforces strict (highcoin) dress codes.
Ghoraun Iron-Armed Owner of Ghoraun's Sea Foundry, the Dock Ward smithy that cast anchors, ballast and great mast bracings for half of the ships of the Sea of Swords. Died during the 1368DR sahuagin invasion. In the days after the harbor ran red, stranded sailors, orphans and widows, rescue workers, and the wounded and dying of a half-dozen infirmaries set up in the ruined warehouses along the Docks had their fill of the meat of giant crabs, dragon turtle flesh and raw colossal squid, fed until all but the saltiest of sea dogs swore off seafood forevermore. The great ruined skeleton of the Foundry was piled so high with the massive cracked crab shells, stinking squid beaks and the sharp, twisted spines of sea snakes that it is still referred to as The Shell Pit to this day.

Jhalbom Blackboots Grim, barbate. Rough-voiced and quick-witted. A former commander of the once-feared Carrion Crawlers mercenary company (active across Tethyr and the Southlands). It is not known if he left service before or after the Crawlers' decimation at The Battle Before Sunrise, and he does not talk of his past. What is known is that the parting was apparently not mutual, given the (sometimes armed) hostility displayed during his encounters with fellow former Carrion men. Active in Waterdeep as hiresword and assassin. Often in the employ of Lord Baerom Thunderstaff.
Jhasper Goldtoes (LN HaM Exp7/T2) Jhasper is a Sage of the Font, a member of the Council of Sages of the temple of Oghma. Once a familiar sight on the trade routes and caravans of the Western Heartlands (including a rather lengthy period of employment with the Six Coffers Market Priakos). Advancing years and a newfound love for the precepts of the Binder led him to settle, first in Silverymoon and then in the newly-established Font of Knowledge. Today he is a major part of the fledgling Oghmanyte community (where he is affectionately known as "The Little Master"), and his intimate knowledge of trade and trading companies and commerce in general have made him an emmissary between the priests of the Binder and the more mercantile-minded citizens of the city (Laskar Ilithair, in particular, has been keen to recruit the old halfling to join the church of Waukeen as an advisor). [ Source: City of Splendors - Who's Who In Waterdeep, p.61. Name/Occupation given. Additional detail by me. ]
Jhelan Sarsorel (CG HM B) An acclaimed bard and devotee of Finder Wyvernspur. Author of "The Mouths of Madness," a biting satire and tragedy based on the Mis-Rule of the Lords Magister. A native of Silverymoon. Fine-featured, with long bluish-black hair that he keeps pulled back into an Uthgardt braid and a dry, cutting sense of humor.
Jhengalūve "Delvesdeep" Noted adventuress. Short and stout and saturnine. Has a garish scar atop the left side of her scalp, which she covers with helm, bandanna, or plumed hat (depending on social situation). Hauled The Iron Hornbook of Felourfar out of the depths of the Undermountain. She sold two of the unique spells contained therein, Felourfar's Wretched Effeminancy and Feloufar's Unavoidable Limerence, to the mages of the Watchful Order. Disappeared soon thereafter.
Jhenjeravhae The Dancer of Southern Delights. One of the most celebrated courtesans of Waterdeep. Godstruck (died from a stroke) during a performance in the Purple Palace festhall in 1359DR. Her school, The Southern Stage, is now overseen by her foremost apprentice, "Little Jhen" (Jhenūna el Ansefavva, a Calishite LN HF Exp4).

Recently a scribe of the noble house of Estelmer was robbed after having his house warded by Ghemmer. It is believed that deliberate bypasses were worked into the wardings, and this is further aided by the fact that Sunite priestesses paid to find Ghemmer found him chained and bound in the bedroom of a young glimmersheath well known to the church. Said young woman was found in the room as well, alternately drooling then raving like a madwoman, and thus utterly useless to investigators, having been forcibly overdosed on a drug of known to be of Calishite origin. Ghemmer states that he never saw his assaulter's true face, and that he had been surprised upon entering the room to find himself meeting a twin of the young doxy that had lured him there.
The scribe of house Estelmer refused to reveal what was stolen from his house to authorities, but it is believed that he has ties to the harpers. It is also known that he is privately hiring adventurers to hunt down the thief and retrieve some paperwork. Rumors run rampant as to the source of this thief, from doppelgangers to Zhent, Knights of the Shield, Rundeen, Xanathar guild, and other spies. Rumors of a secret gathering to sell a list of known harper spies within the city of Luskan have also begun to circulate within the city. |

Ah, the age-old conundrum; do you bring your doxies back to your place and risk exposing your hoarded secrets, or do you go to theirs, where a second party might be lying a-wait. Try a high-coin festhall next time Ghemmer, I'm pretty sure they have contingencies for this exact scenario (and you'll have someone else to shoulder the blame if things still go sour).
That does raise an interesting question, tho; how much responsibility does a festhall have when one of their employees turns out to be malicious doppleganger or malevolent spell-slave? In a situation when the victim is of enough station or import to matter, that is.

Good question, and I'd bet actually little. I'd bet many festhalls essentially work as rental units, wherein the doxies pay to use the festhall rather than the other way around. Kind of like how many exotic dancer locations actually have the dancers paying the owners of the facility in order to dance. That way the owner of the establishment gets a guaranteed amount of business no matter what. Other places may work entirely differently where the individuals earn a percentage every time they perform from the owners of the establishment who ensure that the individuals pay up. The two business models would have vastly different links to the working women in them. |

Fhlarengannath "Brazenbrass" A proud, excitable, headstrong young bronze dragon. Sibling of the bronze wyrm, Fhlarphelsult "Tallowbrass." Both seem to have settled in around the shores of Highstar Lake, in the High Moor (according to the sage Parhcharest Sullamatharn this may account for the sudden rise in tales of meeting talking animals in the region, as well as the similar onset of reports of travellers hearing "the roaring and howling of enraged spirits"). Whether this is permanent lodging or a temporary whim is as yet unknown.
Fhlarphelsult "Tallowbrass" A young bronze dragon whose scales are mottled and misshapen like the remnants of a half-burned candle, the result of severe wasting magics. Sibling of the bronze wyrm, Fhlarengannath "Brazenbrass." Both seem to have settled in around the shores of Highstar Lake, in the High Moor (according to the sage Parhcharest Sullamatharn this may account for the sudden rise in tales of meeting talking animals in the region, as well as the similar onset of reports of travellers hearing "the roaring and howling of enraged spirits"). Whether this is permanent lodging or a temporary whim is as yet unknown.
Filkraund Harballanth Proprietor of Harballanth's Harpings (Strings and Finework), Hassantyr's Street, North Ward. Mild-tempered, calculating, grudge-holding. Thin hair, black streaked with grey. Presided for a time as Elk Horn (master) of The Golden Elk, a beast-cult based around worship of a mythical husband of the unicorn goddess, Lurue (faithful claim magic and mastery of wild beasts, specifically savage or magical beasts. They also believe the god Malar to be son and servant). Formerly more widespread, at one time even claimed noble houses Ilvastarr and Tchazzam as great sponsors. During Filkraund's reign a number of the Horned were killed by aggreived Malarites on a Great Hunt, and many of the rest left after the Elkhelm, the gold-plated horned regalia of leadership, was stolen by unknown hands in the ensuing chaos.
"Firethroat" Hallabaster A relatively new martialist at the Field of Triumph. He swallows a throatful of zzar before and after each fight and spews it into a lit torch, creating a colorful flameball, hence his appellation. A veteran of the Luskan legions. Despises Waterdhavians and lets the crowds at the Field know it.
Flynn Stoutshield (NG DM War3) A member of the Waterdeep Watch (Trades Ward). Broad-shouldered, grey-haired, balding. Heavy jaws fringed by short grey side-whiskers. Deep-set cinammon eyes. Gruff, laconic. Has a soft spot for the local nightskirts, many of whom he patronizes when off-duty.
Forlzar "Five-Favors" Local bullyblade and tavern staple, can be hired as a sellsword. Long blonde hair, pale blue eyes. Insoucient, cocksure. Rather petty and vindictive when percieved to have been wronged. Formerly a pleasure-slave to Ashmaragh the Sumptuous Ensorceller, Pasha of Teshburl. His "Five Favors" refer to matters of a prurient nature, and are not for discussion in polite company.

The upsurge in talking animals is in truth related to the arrival of the two young bronze dragons, however, not in the method that one would expect in which the talking animals are simply shape shifted versions of said dragons. "Brazenbrass" believes that her brother "Tallowbrass"'s wasting disease is more than one of just body. She believes it also to be a disease which is slowly draining him of intelligence as well. This disease brings about painful fits, during which the young dragon must be confined for his own protection. These fits somewhat resemble dragon rage, and during such fits random animals within a small radius seem to become awakened with magical intelligence. Whether this awakening is permanent or temporary, neither knows. However, they believe it to be a result of an interaction with some dragon cultists who invaded their parents' lair and tried to enslave them to the cult's whim. Their parents' risked their own lives so that the two young bronze dragons might escape, but Fhlarphelsult was hit by a strange green beam meant to hit his sister (he jumped in the line of the ray to protect his sibling).
The two young bronzes do not know if their parents survived, but they have come to High Star Lake because of a tale told to them by their mother of the Lady Lurue curing madness in afflicted creatures with a touch of her horn. They found a human, Filkraund Harballanth, who studied the arts of nature and music in the College of Fochlucan at the House of the Harp in Silverymoon. Filkraund has assured them that if he can retrieve the Elkhelm he can use it to "lure Lurue" into the area by "issuing a mating call". They have in fact found the Elkhelm, and many of the "roaring and howling of enraged spirits" are in fact Filkraund trying to call Lurue using the helm (which has bonded to his skull, giving him the appearance of having moose horns mounted to the front of his skull). Unfortunately, this calling has also begun to attract members of other god's churches as well, seeking to kill Filkraund, Lurue, and/or the bronze dragons. In particular servants of the churches of Malar and Beshaba have been seen in the area, as well as members of the Cult of the Dragon. In addition, Filkraund has begun a slow transformation, such that he has begun to resemble what was known in Raumathar society as a "Shatjan". Meanwhile, though Lurue has not been seen, the sudden appearance of a golden-furred dire moose cow in the area has been reported, though such reports often have said creature being forced to flee by aggressive carnivores. Other reports of a Beshaban priestess seeking to capture Filkraund for a mating session are likewise unconfirmed.
In addition to all of this, a warrior Skald of the church of Milil and an archivist-mage of the church of Deneir in Silverymoon, along with a herald dispatched from the Herald's Holdfast, a hybsil, and a pair of satyrs, have been seen in the surrounding areas seeking news of a group of dragon cultists. These cultists are rumored to have infiltrated the Holdfast and recovered a piece of parchment on a paper made of hide which still held a bit of its own fur. Its also rumored that these cultists retrieved a set of birdpipes rumored to be crafted from a set of strangely swirled horn. |

Sleyvas, I love all of that. Even the dire furred moose cow. And the crazed Beshaban ("The Horns of Misfortune," indeed)
==================================================
Lurlenne "Bluesheen" (CN water genasiF) The Blueshined Goddess. Tavern singer, festhall dancer, and delving blade-for-hire. Doe-eyed, hawk-nosed. Flowing, wavy black hair, heavy black eyebrows. Has had her ears crimped in the old Silvaeren style to make them appear more "elvish." Her skin is a mottled cerulean and cobalt, hence her appellation. Noted for having briefly wielded Neekar, "The Sword of Tongues." Claims to have lost in the the depths of the Undermountain, but most believe she gave it up to settle a drinking or gambling debt. (Note: see "Bazaar of the Bizarre," Nathaniel S. Downes, Dragon Magazine #188 for more info on Neekar).
Lusker (NG HM F7) A young aumarr (captain) of the Guard. Promoted up from the Watch after successfully leading the assault on the gargoyle-infested Maernos villa in early 1369DR. His exhortation of "Damn the Drainspouts!" (or, more fully, "damn the drainspouts, keep blasting the cornices!") has become the expletive of choice among many rank-and-file guardsmen. [ Source: Marco Volo: Departure, p.12. Name/Occupation given. Additional detail by me. ]
Lyrond Moonstar A noble of House Moonstar (later Patriarch of the House) [b.1113/d.1144]. Second child of Alathene/Morath. A daring boldblade in his youth. Married the former Calishite slave-girl Astreal of the Unquenchable Desires in 1132. Three children Hormuk, Dreldanna, Lyrond "the Younger."
Astreal of the Unquenchable Desires A Calishite pleasure-slave, once owned by Zalaezurr Ylorbbas, the Black Flame, Pasha of Ibarael. Fought her way through her masters' men and cut down Zalaezurr himself in the Blue Hippogriff festhall. Her wild abandon and lust for freedom captured the heart of the nobleman Lyrond Moonstar, in attendance at the time. Astreal recruited Lyrond and six other willing blades and travelled south to Ibarael, defeating the Pasha's defenses and looting his treasure room. The wealth gained that day became her dowry when she married the Moonstar heir, and her fiery temper (and wild impulses) made continual waves through Waterdhavian society when he later became Lord of the House (and her, Lady). The bardic paean Lady of Love and Blood (and the later stage-play Astreal the Unquenchable), both penned in her honor, are still well-known to this day.
Ryandur Var One of six boldblades who followed Lyrond Moonstar and Astreal of the Unquenchable Desires south to plunder the treasure rooms of Zalaezurr Ylorbbas, the Black Flame, Pasha of Ibarael. Penned the well-known bardic paean Lady of Love and Blood in honor of the former Calishite slave-girl. Died in the plague of 1150DR.

Mahlond "Master of Tassels" Rope, cord, and "finethread" (embroidery thread) maker. Has a shop, Mahlond's Allthreadings, Ship Street, Dock Ward. A lover of strategy and board games, frequently plays with the Red Knight priest Crovyn Thalasker.
Mairalla Mlur (LOOR; the "M" is largely silent) The Beauty of Shifting Colors and Moving Mists. A dark-skinned native of the Tashalar. Priestess of Leira and highcoin entertainer. Diminutive and well-rounded; high-arched eyebrows, heavy-lidded eyes. Long, heavily-curled copper hair. Known for her phantasmagoric stage shows. It should be noted that while she does not alter the contours or colors of her face (that is, as she says, "the provenance of those fainéant followers of the Firehaired"), she does alter everything else around her, including the air and the very firmament under her feet, even when not on stage.
Malaghast "Redblood" Feared Lathanderite sea reaver, once active in the shipping lanes between Amn and Waterdeep. Dyed the braided tips of his forked beard crimson. Seamaster (captain) of the Redblood. Notorious for giving captured opponents and mutinous crew alike the opportunity of being "reborn in the light" (keelhauled under the ship and emerging again into the sunlight above). In 1342DR the Redblood was pursued into a fierce gale by Amnian naval ships and later found run ashore on the Sword Coast south of Daggerford, but Malaghast and his crew were never apprehended. It was afterwards whispered that the salvagers that stripped down the wreck were actually Malaghast's crew in disguise, and that they then transported the timbers and fittings whole, overland, to the Inner Sea, where the ship was rebuilt and re-launched to continue on a-pirating.
Malask The Blackjool. Has straight black hair, a long, hooked nose, and small black eyes. An underling of the Xanathar. Runs a number of smallcoin (numbers) gambling games in southern Trades Ward. Reports to "Burnt" Harkhos, the Xanathars' Trades Ward "Collector of Coins." Attended by a trio of runners and thieves named (in order of ascending size, temper and bloodthirst) Tupp, Pouch and Scrogg.
Malavor Mage of Many Scribings. A prolific scribe and noted adherent of Deneir. Disappeared sometime before 1325DR. His abode, long since plundered, is now the site of Mother Teshla's Turret Club (currently one of the more popular gathering-places for "lads and lasses of the sword" in the city). Two of his spells, Malavor's Eternal Scriptitation and Malavor's Welcome Refocillation, are still known to the faithful of the Lord of Glyphs.

Orluth Ombelmar Broad cheeks and broad belly, pug nose. Bright blue eyes. A ships-chandler (dealer in sails and ropes and other supplies for sailing ships) and First Taster (chairman) of the Delightful Sours, an upper-room club whose members go to great lengths to discover and bring forward for tasting the absolute worst vintages available; the more bitter or sour or disagreeable in general the better (turned tomb-wines are especially prized). So far place of honor goes to a rather putrid plonk brought from the far jungles of Chult, said to have been made from the fermented remains of certain jungle berries masticated and regurgitated by the native there.
Orlūvharn "Lanternhand" A well-known mercenary adventurer. Famed for delving the ancient dwarven ruin of Huthburl (Dauntar's Tusk). Wears a belt of storm giant strength and the Gilded Pelt of Arvhendhas (a druids' cloak which grants him the ability to wildshape into a dire brown bear and summon varying forms of balefire, source of his nickname). Orlūvharn was accompanied by two large cairn wolves until they were slain by a remorhaz in the mountains outside of Mirabar. A member of the Blue Elk Brotherhood (a loose association of northern rangers and woodsmen).
Orstara Owns a modest run of "small-carriages" (one-horse carts providing transport to no more than two passengers at a time) that operate in Castle and Trades Wards. Of the two dozen horses in her stable, eight have recently fallen sick or lame, a suspicious (not to mention ruinous) condition she blames on the vengeful vexes of one of her competitors.
Orunglas "the Old Mace" (LN DM F8) The former Ward Civilar of South Ward (1311-1354DR). He uses no surname in mourning of his lost clanhold, which fell in 1245DR to the rampaging orcs of the Black Horde. Has three surviving sons; Morn, Domthur "Strongeye," and Dellin. He is currently employed as the speaker (contact) for the Stout Wheel Trading Coster, a merchant venture organized by his sons.
Orūnlae (Or-OON-Lay) "Whisperer and Wealmother of the Wonderful Spirits of Sparkling Air and Genial Sky." Priestess of Akadi. When nobles return to the city from their sunny winter harbors to the south, northern tradition demands a "cleansing" or blessing of their long-shuttered domiciles. In ages past, a priest of the head of house's favored deity would be summoned, but current highcoin fashion calls for a priestess of the Elemental Mother of Air, a literal "airing out" of the previous year's bad luck, petty feuds and failed ventures. Has no fixed place of business, but sends hired runners to all noble villas armed with her coin-cry ("An end to the age-old apprehension of the deepening snows; an end to the vast, far-spreading dread and deep-lying fears of the northern winter. Never again, in this new wakening and revival, on wingéd breath direct from the mystery and miracle of the bejeweled bosom of All-Encompassing Akadi!"). Slender, dark-skinned, grey-haired. Serious and solemn when performing her sacred rites for paying customers, but fearless, adventuresome and bold-tongued when left to her own devices.

Andramnar of Selūne A long-ago crusader of Selūne. His corpse was inhabited by a malign devil from the Lower Planes during a Grand Resurrection ceremony. His possession and ensuing evil deeds still haunt the Moonmaiden's Waterdhavian clergy.
Andrremn Thunderstaff (CN HM W6) A noble of House Thunderstaff. Thick-set, barbate, weather-beaten. A great outdoorsman. Fond of hunting and mercantile expeditions, but prefers to oversee hired hands delving dungeon or ruin from a slight distance.
Andrūnae Ilghast The author of the infamous memoir Ill-Ventures: Wound-Stitching and Other Lessons Hard Learned (1277DR). "Spells are like men; useful when you want them, annoying and dangerous when you don't. And only brought to motivation with a lot of hand-gestures and grunting."
Angler Jaern Tall and rail-thin. Dark, keen eyes set in a deep-lined face. Formerly a pikeman in the Tethyrian legions. Now a member of the Hobgoblins street gang. Deft at the use of a hooked pole to snatch linen or anything sitting or hanging from windowsills or elsewhere, or to boost himself up into upper story domiciles.
Annadlué Featherfoot Half-elven member of the Waterdeep Guard. Has won the last four Hammerclimbs (the annual Guard race to the top and then back down of the most mountainous snowdrifts along the city walls), as well as the accompanying Melsk's Chalice (a silver cup full of icewine) and the winnings from the side-bets purse. Tithes deeply to Auril in the winter months.

The Five Items Proffered At The Bazaar of the Bizarre "In those days it was still the custom to fill the living rooms with bric-a-brac." The Iron Heel, Jack London
==================================================
Nymshan's Iron Plate (The Weal of Dragons) A suit of platemail +1, fashioned with scaled vambraces, a gorget inset with a magnificent ruby starburst, and two ornate, curling, dragon-shaped shoulder guards. Grants continual fire resistance, clairaudience at will, personal cure medium wounds 2x/day (gorget ruby glows brightly when used), and heroism (as potion) 1x/day (dragon pauldrons rear heads and roar). Additional enchantments have been documented, but sages believe they were innate to the matching full helm, which was sundered by the hook horrors that claimed Nymshan's life in the root-choked warrens under ruined Thurvarn.
* *
The Rigol of Oourn A crown fashioned from the magically preserved eyestalks (charm humans, induce fear, transmute flesh to stone, useable 6x/day in any combination) of Mauve Oourn, a legendary elder orb beholder. It is said that the Mighty Mauve Malefactor still seeks the return of his withered appendages.
* *
Waraulf's Horn Sounding this horn makes a noise exactly like the hunting howl of a wolf. Sacred to Malar. Anyone who blows the horn in the hunt of a sentient creature (for sport, food or bloodlust) gains the powers of infravision 60'r, pass without trace, and vitality (as the potion) for a full day and night. If the proscribed 24-hour period passes without the quarry being brought to bay and killed, the horn turns dormant and the Beastlord's displeasure is manifested in a hunting pack of 2d4 dire wolves which will track and assault the sounder without exception.
* *
Shaeldussra A dark, sturdy shaft carved with images of numerous animals and beasts, and topped with a brilliant red spearhead of chipped fire opal, which seems to pulse and glow with deep golden motes. Uthgardt legend tells of a time when the totem god Red Tiger gathered his most puissant warriors to him, to hunt and slay Aragluin the Swift, Blood of Lurue. The greatest prize, the still-beating heart of Aragluin, was claimed by the wily sorcerer Black Hauklar. Hauklar fashioned the Heart into the speartip of Shaeldussra, but in the process angered Red Tiger, he for whom the heart of the enemy was traditionally reserved. Black Hauklar did not live long after this slight, as a sudden flashflood swept him away and buried the small clanhold he led under mud and uprooted timber. It is said that Red Tiger still nurses this insult, and that even now anyone wielding the spear will draw the ire of Red Tiger, and of Lurue and her clergy as well. Shaeldussra is a spear +2. The carvings along the shaft, representative of the many creatures hunted by Red Tiger, can be called forth as from a bag of tricks (bag type and animal type rolled separately each time). Grants the wielder the effects of boots of elvenkind and doubles their movement speed when grasped. It is also a cursed item as a phylactery of monstrous attention.
* *
Onbrūl (The Dire Blade of Thelingar) Thelingar, later known in legend as The Storm That Had Come to Brelim, was a barbarian warrior of Kozah. He gained his fame at Brelim, singing paens to his god while cleaving through the orc hordes massed there. It was on that day that the blade gained its' +1 enchantment, by deed and by deific desire. Additionally, if fighting orcs the wielder gains +3 to hit/damage, and may also rage, as a barbarian of 10th Level, 1x/day.

Throrr The great frost giant king of old, who reached up to the heavens to snatch the darkly-laden snow clouds of Auril to stuff his bedding and was punished for his effrontery by being forever imprisoned within his frozen bedchamber ("you have chosen your bed, now you shall lie forevermore within it"), which today is the glacier known as The Blue Rampart (in the eastern Spine of the World, high above the Valley of Khedrun). The fallen hero Rhembrul Northblood is said to be the only living soul to pierce Auril's divine wrath and delve Throrr's hall, a feat which gained him his weapon, the deadly, crimson-edged scimitar called Angūrash ("The Last Rim of the Sinking Sun"). The rest of Throrr's legendary treasure hoard is presumably untouched, still entombed in the ice with him.
Thué Sword-she and boldblade (adventurer). A coarse-featured woman, with keen and cold dark eyes. Wary, dangerous. Wears Finaufler's Choker (provides immunity to missiles [normal and magical up to +2 enchantment], as well as the spell magic missile [but not acid arrow or lightning bolt or any such other]).
Thullgrim of the Black Shield (N HM F) Master of the Black Shields mercenary company (Thullgrim and his factor, Zaebrum, have lodgings at the Dripping Dagger, while the majority of Black Shields are quartered in the Dessarin village of Haeld's Foot). Tall, storm-browed and imposing. A man of few words, fewer manners, and little liking for the trappings of civilization. Fond of blackroot chew-weed (especially Beregost Black and Yellow Merķntha, the varieties cultivated east of Beregost). His shield, source of his appellation, is a massive artifact of Illuskan origin (where it was also known as "The Fire-Blackened Shield" and "Averhane's Wall").
Thur Aquarvol (CN merfolkF Aris4 [formerly P6 of Umberlee]) Keeper of the Cache, Voice of the Depths. The Sonorous Splendor, The Sapphire Flame of the Sea, Her Aequoreal Magnificence. Slender and well-toned with pronounced collar bones and shoulder blades, and an elongated neck and webbed fingers. The "back" (top) of her fish-tail is a deep, almost blackish, midnight blue, grading to a brilliant azure and light platinum coloration in the "front" (underbelly). Overlarge, deep blue eyes framed by a pronounced brow. Enhances her eyes, thin lips and unclothed, half-scaled breasts with a shimmering rouge made from powdered corals. Her upper arms and wrists are wrapped with multiple bands of beaten blueshine metal, and she keeps her straight, glossy black hair bound in an ornate web of pearl strands. Wraps her slender hips with a sash of shimmering teal and two fine girdle-chains of silver adorned with thumb-sized amarathas. While her worship of Umberlee put Aquarvol at odds with the rest of the merfolk community under Waterdeep Harbor, her self-appointed "guardianship" of Umberlee's Cache gave her great status and privilege among the humans in the city above. Her attempts at greater understanding of the land-dwellers led her to invest in many merchant concerns and cabals, such as her involvement in the short-lived "Cult of Ao." She survived the sahuagin onslaught of 1369DR unscathed, but her faith in the Bitch Queen was soon strained by the appearance of the Umberlant priest Meirtid Archneie. Her political power was usurped by the human cleric, who quickly wrested control of the Cache from her and arranged the building of a grand cathedral to the south of the harbor. Soon after she became outcast from her surviving mer-kin, who regarded Umberlee as indifferent to (or, more likely, complicit in) the sahuagin slaughter. A virulent plague in the remnant undersea community in 1371DR led her to beg succor from her rival Archneie, but this too ended badly; the plague was a trap set by the Umberlant to ensure his control over both the priesthood and the waters of the harbor. The merfolk shaman now languishes in a dark cell deep beneath the rising Queenspires, awaiting sacrifice to the Bitch Queen upon completion of the temple. [ Note: See "The Cult of Ao: Who Watches Those who Watch over You?," Steven Schend, Polyhedron Magazine #94 and City of Splendors: Waterdeep, p.111 for official references ]
Tlabbras Crael (LN ½EM Exp5/P5 of Tymora) The Voice of the Halls (Temple of Tymora). Thinning brown hair and high forehead, warm brown eyes. Very well read and possessed of a fabulous memory. Noted for the sharpness of his wit and for his voluminous correspondance.

Moonshasa Melf A senior member of the Watchful Order (holds the office of Accomplished Master of Transmutations). Fat and flouncy. Shining golden eyes. Well-coiffed hair, great red cheeks and jowls, and a force-of-personality that holds the heat of a thousand suns when he turns his attentions on someone. Wears many glittering and gaudy rings and neck adornments. Keeps up with all the latest fashions but wears them in the brightest and most garish colors possible. Is tart and sharp-tongued, but has such personal charisma that no one seems to hold his words against him. He has enough talent in the Art to transform himself in any way large or small but, as he puts it, "of what purpose would it be to try and perfect the already perfect?" A great belly-god and lover of theater, both high and low. "Moonshasa Melf" is not his given name, but both his birth name and his birthplace remain mysterious. Benignant with his coin and his affections, and has a large coeterie of lovers (of both sexes), hangers-on, and aspiring mages, artists and bardlings around him as a result.
"Mother" Avarae Owner of a boarding house on Rising Ride, Trades Ward. Avarae runs the house with the help of a number of young ladies, mostly local orphans or low-coin lasses that she brought in off the street. She doesn't tolerate any loud noise or shenanigans in her home, and is quick to give a tongue-lashing or a smack with a broomstick to offenders. If a customer gets too rowdy, she can call on her four sons for help, all of whom are local drovers and dockhands.
"Mother" Irimae (LG HF Monk3/P8 of Ilmater) The Healing Hands, The Merciful Mother. Irimae is an aged-yet-still-active priestess of Ilmater, and leader of the White Mission, the Ilmataran mission in South Ward. A native of Tethyr. Steel-grey hair and eyes, iron-hard, corded forearms and calloused hands. She is rumored to have once been quite proficient in unarmed combat. She usually dresses in simple shifts of white and opalescent colors, and is always accompanied by the Orb of Ardent Spirits, a magical article of the faith that levitates just behind her right shoulder.
"Mother" Melūne A quartet of old, cheery, diminutive, grey-haired matrons from the farmlands nigh Rassalantar. Fronts for the fruit-growers there. Set their stalls at separate points in the Market and the Court of the White Bull during most days. They all answer to "Mother Melūne," they all sound the same melodious calling-cry; "Fresh from the vine, full and fine. Taste them and try. Sweet to tongue and sound to eye; Come buy, come buy."
"Mother-of-Thousands" A notorious deepspawn lairing somewhere in the rocky ridges north-east of Dragonspear.
Muntolph Dunzrimn Many-Fingered Munty. A retired cutpurse and sneak-thief. Survived banishment to the Undermountain by becoming an agent of the Lords (Durnan, specifically, though he keeps his identity hidden). Owns Tathtall's Great Gallipots, a Dock Ward (Candle Lane) apothecary and physic (the previous owner, Ruroamyn Tathtall, was slain during the sahuagin invasion and his rumored life-sized platinum idol of the winter sea-storm cult goddess Mrintha of the Deadly Tresses was never found). Still discreetly peddles a number of poisons of varying toxicity (everything from relentless eye-watering or finger or toe numbing to deadly throat-tightening and vital organs seizure).

Ollem Asalbar A Calishite bard with crooked teeth and a big grin. He spends most of his time in the tankard houses of the lower wards, alongside the local ne'er-do-well Nauthaen "Able-Hands." Ollem is a historian of sorts, and is writing a tome on the countless adventuring companies of the North. He will listen enrapt to an adventurer's tales (no matter how far-fetched) for the entire day if allowed. Such pursuits don't pay well, but you wouldn't know from the steadily-expanding size of his waistline, a feat abetted by his new love, the diminutive, doe-eyed tavern wench Samarkha (LG HF Com1; kind-hearted and industrious, a masterful cook; has no vocal talent but loves singing, also devours any chapbook romances she can lay hands on).
Oloné Loarandar (N ½EF SP of Shaundakul) (Oh-Low-NAY) Master of Roving and Wandering, and All the Nomad-Tented Stars. An old woman, big, gaunt, and very strong. Can still do the work of any two men, although over seventy years of age. Brown skin burnt even darker by the sun. Has fierce amber eyes and a pile of grey hair pulled up atop her head. Feared for her penetrating glance, demanding demeanor, and her untiring energy. Can be found on the caravan roads acting as guide, master of horse, or trail-cook. Comes to Waterdeep to have her trail boots re-soled by Thurve Thentavva, her favorite cobbler.
Ombaddo Ormbulspar Proprietor of Ombaddo's Opportunities (tinker and tinsmithy; Coach Street, South Ward. "Curiosities and strangenesses; surprises from the past; restoration of every type of object and material"). An old, florid, wrinkled gnome who claims his name means "fixes-everything" (in exactly which language, he doesn't specify). His shop is a ramshackle mess of old brass, bronze, iron and tin items, in the midst of which he can be found constantly tinkering hammering, mending, glueing and in general, fiddling. Loves haggling and bargaining; loves a challenge or a puzzle even more.
The Omighty Oghsfuscate The statue of Oghma that sits in the main entry hall of the Font of Knowledge. Donated to the temple by Khelben Arunsun himself. It is rumored that the statue was carved long ago in the great city of Myth Drannor, and that its' outstretched empty hand once held a golden sheaf of powerful (though magically cursed) scrolls. The statue has proven quite popular with the junior priests and acolytes of the temple, who named it ("Oghsfuscate" being an intentional malaprop of "Obsfuscate") and now periodically blindfold it, paint it in garish colors, and place various inappropriate items in its' empty grasp. [ Source: A 08/21/04 posting to the REALMS-L list by Steven Schend. Description given. See the novel Blackstaff for canon description. Additional detail by me. ]
Omnabrahm Zeiyl al-Zlaubyr The Lawful Light of Anachtyr. Zeiftan of the Zlaubyr, Padishah of Domed Gaulifar. Envoy (ambassador) of the southern city-state of Shiertalar to both Waterdeep and the Lord's Alliance. Attended by the towering Chultan warriors Ulbaphra, Armazhan and Roardros, and by the Beyzeif Mohrgruz of the Shining Chain. Upon his arrival in the city some two summers ago Omnabrahm settled his massive entourage into The Cascade of Coins (one of the most opulent rental villas in Sea Ward, so named for the illusory gold coins that continually stream down the front pillars of the residence, fading from sight just out of hands reach). The gatherings and masquerades he hosts are the stuff of legend in the upper social circles of the city.

Murlameera Muddled Murl. A minor alchemist and seller of herbs, balms and other medicines (cramped, odious shop on Bitter Alley, Dock Ward). She knows the secrets of preparing blaeluth (yellow mold powder; a poison made from yellow mold spores; when mixed with liquid it poisons just as yellow mold does. Easily ruined by excessive light or heat), will sell doses to interested buyers. Stringy grey hair, hunchback; surprisingly youthful face. Has a dead (milky-white) left eye.
Murleene Nildrae Hawkwinter A young noble of House Hawkwinter (daughter of Aleric / Narae). A red-faced, breathless-from-scampering-everywhere, sandy-haired girl, always bedecked with a dazzling array of rings on her fingers. When she grows up she plans to replace them all with magical varieties. Hates her name (and the musty, cheek-pinching, ear-pullling great-aunt it first belonged to), demands everyone call her Nilda.
Murphos the Mace (CE HM War4) Broad and squat. Close-cropped black hair, bulbous nose, braided chin beard. Ill-tempered, ill-mannered. Dangerously ambitious. An enforcer for the Hobgoblins street gang.
The Murstmen (Tinydaggers) Scornubian thieves guild. Named (rather inaccurately, for they are neither "men" as in male-only, nor only "men" as in human, as Hin founded and predominate the guild roster) after murst, the small swarming flies that choke the Caravan City in the rainy months and leave painful bites (black flies). Murst agents in Waterdeep include Hargyn "Boldo" Boldobuckle and Barqelf the Nimble.
Musical and Dance Troupes Hired for noble balls, highcoin gatherings, festival days, temple occurrences and official gatherings at the Palace. Some play music (with or without vocals), some perform (dance or acrobatics or both), some incorporate all such. Please note this category does not include solo or minor groupings of bards as are frequently found in city taverns, or travelling entertainers and beast-shows; nor does it cover tale-spells or festhall workers (festhalls often maintain their own, in-house stables of acrobats and contortionists). Local troupes include (seperate entries in italics); The Boldstrings, The Bright Melodies, The Chromatic Scales, The Derry-Dols, Desha's Delights, Dharimma's Brightnotes, The Evensongs, The Faerietones, The Five Fasharoons, The Florid Fancies, The Gladharps, The Good Gigues, Lashnara's Lyrewings, The Light Laughter (see Aleuadae), The Merry-Dols, The Merrymouths (see Bandagul Longstaff), The Merry Movements, The Merry Wind-Cries (see Blaephul Zzarmmaster), The Shoon Singers, The Taum Brothers, The Wonder Whistlers.

Irskloon of Iriaebor Mage-priest of Azuth and author of Claws In The Dark: A True Tale of Adventure In The Darkest Depths (1316DR). "As I was trying to ascertain where my sudden and wholly unexpected fall had taken me, the far wall of rough-hewn stone unlidded two mossy-browed eyes and asked, quite clearly, 'I calculate you have never been in these parts before?'"
Irthaun Goldenshield The Knight Who Rode East Unto The Dawn (to find the foul wizards who slew his lady fair). And never returned. Romantic chapbooks, plays of courtly love, and bardlings looking to make young maidens swoon all expound upon it in great florid detail.
Iseriasha "Darkeyes" (LN HF Exp4/P4 of Sune) High Exultant of Sune, The Eye of the Goddess. Herald of the temple, secretary to the high priestess Ssaeryl Shadowstar. Sends trumpeters and runners throughout the city to announce official temple business and arranges appointments for those deemed important (or rich) enough to make it past the array of doorwards and under-secretaries. Behind her bold and flirtatious exterior lies a serious and quite intelligent mind. Dark snakelike coils of hair, heavy-lidded blue eyes. Prefers free-flowing, shoulder-baring dresses of crimson and orange. Accompanied by Esys, her pseudodragon companion.
Ismurgelt of Silverymoon A master smith of the Gem of the North. Produces arms and armor of quality suitable for noble's halls or wizardly enchantment. His work is slow and expensive, and he favors suits of armor decorated with fantastical animal motifs (he crafted the golden Wingéd Eagle mail that Lord Piergeiron wore to recieve the official state visit of Queen Alicia of the Moonshaes in 1369DR, and which was later rent and ruined during his legendary battle with the undead wyrm Kistarianth). In 1370DR his hired swords salvaged from the Delzounaar sub-city of Harlbar the High Anvil of the Dwarves known as The Ten-Clangored Table of Clanggedin. In order to haul it they had to excise not only the forge itself but a portion of the three layers of marble, onyx and agate stonework directly beneath it, and the entire piece now sits in a place of honor in his back smithy. Of course, word of Ismurgelt's possession of a holy relic of has reached the ears of the Stout Folk of Mirabar, and and his hired guards have driven back two retrieval attempts already, with more assuredly on the way. [ Note: See "Bazaar of the Bizarre," Roger E. Moore, Dragon Magazine #58, p.27 for information on High Anvils ]
Ivrymn Bethanbrass (NG GM Exp3) The gnomish front-of-shop of Elphester's Exotic Components and Compositions ("Marvelous and wondrous wares, as delights the eye and pleases the imagination," western Bazaar Street, Castle Ward). Peddles exotic alchemical distillates and monster parts, such as rust monster ichor (makes brilliant inks that retain their vibrance for some time), dried rust monster dung (burns a brilliant shade of blue but take care the flame is lit in a well-ventilated space or be overcome by invisible gases!), gilded harpy feathers (was all the rage for women's headgear in the 1350's, and no doubt awaiting an imminent return to high fashion) and giant centipede distillate (a mild "revenge" poison for idle socialites, causes finger nails to turn black and fall out, as well as nasty sores of the tongue). The actual Elphester passed away some dozen winters ago, but Ivrym maintains the illusion of his master's presence in order to trade on his reputation and maintain his outland contacts. When pressed, he claims "the Mighty Elphester" is either leading forth-farings "deep into the vile verdancies of Far Southern Chult," or in magical seclusion, "overseeing the dangerous elemental grinding of ioun stones to craft powerful manhood enchancements."

Yes, you would have to have some powerful manhood enhancements to go grinding them on an elemental. I have heard of rather kinky Thayan individuals using the "stone body" and "iron body" spells towards such ends, and woe be to the poor female efreeti and salamanders who were later abused during the salamander wars.

As was his right as head of the Order, Phaelond the Overlong was the first to offer comment. "Truly, the degeneracy of the perfidious Thayans knows no bounds!," he half-shouted, fervently signing himself with the warding motions of Mystra, Lathander and Sune.
"Nasty, evil things!," exclaimed Thouldar the Overloud, ceremonially spitting on the floor in punctuation. "Creepy, I call it," said Mairyguild from her chair by the fire. "Creepy it is," agreed Darlathla the Dappled, as was her wont.
A mutual silence descended upon the room as everyone present, their decorous furor spent, their righteous indignation ejaculated, began privately considering the novelties of the subject. The merry crackling of the fire in the hearth mirrored the stoked flames of their curiosities, both professional and prurient.
Mairyguild was the first to re-open the conversation. "Still," she offered in a low whisper, "it's not as if such things haven't been explored before on this end of the Realms. I remember one time in a festhall in Memnon...." Her voice trailed off, lost again in an uncertain but intriguing memory. "There would be much to learn, from a naturalist standpoint," said Darlathla, coming to the rescue. "I do believe old Parhcharest has the incantations for cloaking oneself in concretion and asbestus," offered Thouldar in an excited voice, who had now risen from his seat and busied himself in pouring out another round of elverquisst.
"Incidentally," asked Phaelond, the reddish glow of the hearth-fire now fully reflected in his deep-set eyes, "which do you think the offspring of such an unusual mating would resemble more, flame-genasi or lava-mephit?"

Parwell Piddick Hin proprietor of Piddick's Exhibition of Wild Beasts (wild-beast menagerie and exhibition, west-side High Road south of Brian's Street). The roaring of the animals often frightens horses and housewives on the High Road outside. His collection currently consists of a white ape, two stirges, a giant scorpion, eight flying snakes, an axebeak, an empty cage labelled "elemental of air" (equipped with hidden bellows), a carrion crawler, a land urchin, a mangy owlbear and a sulking ogre. Best not to think too hard on how they are all fed. There are also in various stages of disrepair the stuffed carcasses of a displacer beast, two giant crabs, a winter wolf, a peryton, a rust monster, and two giant spiders. An old bard named Telphar sits in a comfy alcove near the peryton and will spin fanciful tales of any monster or beastie desired, for a few coppers.
The Patchcloaks Rising Baldur's Gate thieves guild. Named for the ragged, patched cloaks they wear (many Balduran poorfolk bear similar garments and the guild uses such to blend in). It is said that the patterns of their patches form a secret code known only to their fellow thieves. They are believed to have increasing ties with the Xanathar's Guild, led by their local operative Hurthara "Oldstones."
The Pearlescent Princess Azstarma of the House of Shoon. That noted Calishite royal who was so enamored of pearls and so rich in those gems that from her infancy onwards they formed the majority of her dress and ornamentation. Upon her untimely death it is said that the pearl-fishers of the southern coast let out such anguished despair, "a groaning and weeping the like of which was never before seen or heard in the memory of Man." Common legend says that there is to this day a single giant vault deep within the sunken palace at Talbrakh, that doomed marvel, built on order of her father by the great Mulhorandi architect Khozamash of Thoth (but that is a tale for another time), that houses nothing less than heaps and mounds and chests of pearls and jewelry, the result of the Princess's singular obsession.
"Pepperpot" Souska Local cobble-side stew-maid (street-cooks accompanied only by a small wooden chopping counter and a large battered cauldron are a common sight astride the gutters of the busier thoroughfares during the fall and "milder" winter months), Trades Ward. A very stout, slightly-stooped, elderly woman. Habitually dressed in bright and clashing colours. Glaring golden hair (obtained from crude dyes), broad and thick brown eyebrows. Cheeks burning with rouge and wine-flame. Addresses everyone, customer and passer-by alike, in endearing terms. Her "catch-as-catch-can" and "hearty root" stews, though slightly less watery than her many of her competitors, have a noticeably heavier hand on the "black-crack" (pepper), gaining her her common epithet. Seeing it as great marketing, she has only ground harder since.
Phaelar Roaringhorn (LG HM Aris3/F7) A young noble of House Roaringhorn (younger son of Alaphis and Dlurleene). Tall, dark-haired. Friendly, forthright. Energetically clasps the forearms, grasps the shoulders and thumps the backs of everyone he knows, meets or talks to. An officer in the Naval Guard and a known fancier of racing horses. He has spent much of the last few years at sea avoiding the usual noble intrigues and infighting. Often linked romantically with Aleena Paladinstar, the Open Lord's daughter. Both Phaelar and the Lady Aleena deny any such amorous involvement, but rumor-mongers point to his recent promotion to Master (captain) of the naval raker Fleetwind as proof of his favored status.

LOL, and now we know the reason why their was such a furor for the Mulan outcry of "Freedom in Magical Research" that caused the country's creation. |

The Order of Delvos The Witnessed. Carry the graven image of Tempus on the inner face of their shields, so that He may watch their valor and courage in battle firsthand. Maintain a blood-rivalry with the Order of Sigmarrin which dates back to the time of their foundings. Their Symbol is Two Staring Eyes with Blood-Red Pupils (usually ruby or garnet); their Motto is "We Stand In Thy View." Grandmaster of the Order: None currently in Waterdeep, as the last Shieldmaster was slain by peryton near the Sword Mounts. Other notable members (seperate entries in italics): Belgrim the Well-Blooded
The Order of Sigmarrin The Wrathful (Eyes of the Wargod). Carry the graven image of Tempus on the outer face of their shields, so that He may watch them face and best their opponents firsthand. Maintain a blood-rivalry with the Order of Delvos which dates back to the time of their foundings. The Sigmaer have a small chapterhouse (really a gathering-room and private shrine) in Castle Ward. Their Symbol is Two Staring Eyes of Solid Black (usually onyx or obsidan); their Motto is "Witness Me In Thy Glory." Grandmaster of the Order: Shieldmaster Ralthred Trollslayer. Other notable members (seperate entries in italics): Ambram Grimjoy, Briarshae "Wild-Sword"
The Order of the Aster The Golden Glories, The Swords and Boards, The Golden Asses, The Coinbought. The Waterdhavian Lathanderite order of knighthood most often granted to the sons and minor scions of large-tithing merchant and noble houses (if you've coin and status enough, you too can be an Aster!). It is the largest such, and one of the greatest sources of fees and tithes to the church. There are no less than three Aster chapterhouses in the city, largely stratified along social lines (Trueservants House, a glorified Sea Ward drinking and gaming parlor for noble elders; The Double Asters in Castle Ward, where noble scions hatch grand plans of glory and rescuing maidens and thirdborn sons ride off to die in valiant-but-doomed combat against trolls and dragons; and the North Ward House of the Rising Lights, where wealthy merchant princes talk trade deals and the gleaming signs of social upwardness are grandly displayed). Thier symbol is the eight-pointed Red Aster; their oath is "We Stand In The Darkness Before The Dawn." Grandmaster of the Order: Ondathur Blackgeld. Other notable members (seperate entries in italics): Olbert Roaringhorn, Thaeryn Roaringhorn
Order of the Lambent Tongues Selūnite order of scribes and bards. Their chapterhouse is the downcellar club known as Quellar's Cellars (also referred to by members as Quellar's Yellers, for the ardent and voluminous discussions held within), where bards, poets and scriveners read aloud from works both classic and their own new or unfinished efforts, and convocations such as the Blacktips, the Sharptongues, the Unornamented and the Inkscribed all meet to discuss and opine and to eat, drink and smoke, and endlessly argue without intent to agree. Their symbol is either Selūne's Silver Smile or The Lambent Tongue (a point-uppermost silver quill formed in the shape of a cross-hilted sword), their mottos are too numerous to list. Grandmaster: No such thing. Agaethra Halquellar ("Mother Sharptongue") comes closest, but only because she controls the flow of drinks and edibles to the assembled. Other notable members (seperate entries in italics): Darlathla the Dappled (CG were-catF), Mairyguild "Merrysmoke" Danglefoot, Phaelond the Overlong, Thouldar the Overloud, Tuirlaugh "Old Ink"

Arglanna Black Anna. Short, stout. Dark-haired, horse-faced. Arrow-maker. Her shafts are larger at the point than at the feather end, which she claims enables them to fly farther than others. Sells her wares from a stall in the Market, will eagerly demonstrate their quality down the nearest alley.
Arlrauth A native of Silverymoon. Thin and wiry, verbose. Proprietor of Arlrauth's Bright Blades, a small-swords (fencing and general swordfighting) school, Castle Ward. Teaches sons and daughters of wealthy merchant families, claims his training promotes not only "the art of the sword," but also "agility and mental quickness, strength and velocity, as well as precision in all things."
Arnog Anteos A noble of House Anteos. Fought in the Dragonspear War. Was captured in an early engagement and taken to the Dragonspear dungeons, where he was gnawed by worms and dragged with hooks. Rescued during the fall of the castle and returned to his family, but died bedridden not long thereafter. His magic sword Frost-Glimmer, also taken by the devils, was never recovered.
The Arrant Flourish Dramatic Company A local crew of actors, tumblers, dancers and musicians. Perform a great number of farces and bawdy comedies (and when they play festhalls they do get extra bawdy, and often incorporate resident workers into their performances). Taeral "Yellowjaws" (so named for his impressive blond muttonchops) leads the company, the dark and diminutive Mrilurla ("Lady Lurl") is the lead female performer, and Julusk "Fullthroat" serves as show crier and offstage narrator (as required). Shows are opened with the acrobatic antics of a quartet of halflings led by the nimble hin Bimber Ballowby.
Arravan Wave-Fettered Earns coin aboard the merchant ships of the Sea of Swords as a shipsmage (quells weather and pirates, repairs sails and leaks). A short, wiry man, with a bushy black beard and close-shorn head. When in port he delights in hearing gossip, scandalous behavior and other hints of social impropriety.

The Taum Brothers An acclaimed troupe of dwarven musicians out of the Great Rift to the far south. The Taums play wide, shallow-bottom gongs, made of specially-treated beaten copper and turned flat on their sides. In a darkened room, the Brothers surround the audience in a semi-circle and, as they strike the bowls, the metal gives off sparks of varying color and intensity (depending on where and how hard the bowl is struck). From a low, murmuring start evoking a passing Mirtul rainshower the concert builds to a dazzling crescendo, playing out the titanic myths of the Battle of the Gods, and the Forging of the Dwarven Race. In high demand across the North.
Tauraven A northern slayer of legend. Said to have been raised in the northern wilds by a pride of crag-cats (from whom he learned his mighty battle roar). A popular subject of high-adventure Waterdhavian chapbooks (Tauraven the Terrible, Tauraven Triumphant, and Tauraven and the Lost City of Orphar, to name a few), in which he is floridly (and near-constantly) described as "mithril-thewed." It is also claimed that he fashioned the legendary Red Coat of Tauraven from the pelt of Red Lion, after he defeated the Uthgardt totem god in single combat.
Tavvan Moonstar A noble of House Moonstar (younger son of Haradel and Laspara). An acolyte at the House of the Moon. Bright eyes, auburn hair, thin lips and thin moustache. Has his mother's shy, soft-spoken nature. He has a great love of music and song and, when not attending to his duties at the temple, can be found in the halls of New Olamn observing the bardlings and their practices and wishing he had the courage (and the talent) to join their profession. Becomes quite animated when discussing such matters (the only exception to his usual meek demeanor).
Tazendra the Twice-Blessed (CG HF P14 of Tymora) The Bold Fortune of the Goddess. One of only two faithful of Tymora to have drawn dice twice at The Table Where Tyche's Daughters Laugh (the other being the Tymorite Jorynn Halstaff). Said to be The Fairest of the Fair; fair-haired, fair-skinned, fair-fortuned. Rides Kyrandal, a fleet, well-trained stallion of very dark brown color, white nose and forehead blaze, and a tail knotted in the fashion of the Calishite desert raiders. Sent abroad by high priestess Seenroas Halvinhar who, it is whispered, is very jealous of the young "rising light."
Tcharess "Blueflame" Brandeth (NG ½EF F7/W7) An adherent of Mystra, member of the Knights Errant and true free spirit. Legendary for fighting with rapier in one hand, wand of some sort in the other, and an everpresent grin on her face. Her customary loose blouses, swash-topped boots and ostentatious sashes became the height of fashion among rebellious young highborn daughters for a time (much to the horror of their elders), and she gathered many of them around her, teaching them the basics of spellcasting and swordplay (known as the Merry Bold Maidens, the surviving members still gather, infrequently, to drink a toast to their friend and mentor). Met her doom during a swordfight aboard the failing skyship Grim Balor, when a miscast fireball blew her out of the rigging and down onto the hard parapets of Castle Waterdeep below. Her sword Alathae, the source of the magical radiance from which Tcharess gained her nickname, is now wielded by Elchantra Emmerlyn, the most senior of the surviving Maidens.

ECHOES in UNDERMOUNTAIN (As you peer forth in the dim torchlight, you see something inscribed here upon the wall)
============================
Burbas came, Burbas saw Burbas fled, these Hellish halls.
* * Sweet Mother Mystra forfend Your loyal servant duly defend On this day, in my need Halzmaar of Llast, son of Geld
* * Rogash is mounted by elves (written in orcish)
* * Chanting now, in the darkened depths Tambruth, I dare not go further
* * Here in the second tenday of Eleint, Year of the Prince The Deep Delvers slew all they faced, a slaughter for the gods If you see them in the city above, remember and bow your swords
* * The horrid ghast I could not turn But my lost Elmaurn I made sure to burn
* * All Silmerhelves are spider-kissers!
* * All is cold and damp and drear Farewell, my lovely Felfilarūne I will never lie in your embrace again, I fear
* * Whom these halls wish to ruin They first drive mad
* * Why did Glaerran walk this way And when he said "I follow," to whom did he say?
* * Six torches turned to ash And still the Beast toys with us 'Ware to those who come after Do not disturb the upside-down crown!
* * Those who have never found their way to these lost depths Should hug their Gods tighter and marvel at thier favor
* * Now I understand why Imnur stayed a-drinking at the Portal
* * A pox on all these wall-sayings and their horrid scribblers!

Fadrath "The Sure Sailor" Ulbrinter (N HM Aris1/War5) A minor noble of House Ulbrinter (elder grandson of Iorlas, and second cousin of Nomus, patriarch of the clan). A bald-headed, handsome, arrogant man. Walks with a limp, the result of a childhood wasting disease. Master (captain) of the Mistress of the Morning, the flagship of the Ulbrinter merchant fleet. Fadrath is seconded by his bondservant, the cunning Niicanos the Ever-Wary.
Niicanos the Ever-Wary (LE HM F2/T6) Bondservant of the noble Fadrath Ulbrinter. A native of Chondath. Short and wiry, cunning in nature. Can be employed for occasional murder-for-hire jobs. Wields a crossbow and specially-designed bolts that inject a live rot grub into the target upon impact. These bolts are supplied by the gnomish artificer Tompaddo.
Fael Ironbeard (LN DM Exp4) The "Keeper of the Tomes" (steward and head librarian) at the demihuman-centric library being assembled at the Maernos villa. Tends a small joint shrine to the dwarven gods Berronar and Dugmaren at the villa as well, though he has no discernable sacerdotal leanings. Elderly and in failing health, though still sharp of mind, wit, and tongue. His balding pate is more than compensated for by his luxuriant salt-and-pepper knee-length beard. Never without his hornwood pipe or his iron-shod "teaching aid" (walking staff). Great friends with the gnomish scribe Crookwhistle, despite their disparate personalities.
Faen Farrior (CN HM F13) Well-known mercenary adventurer. Tall, red-bearded. Crooked, horribly rent nose flat against a scarred, bronzed face. Grim, grudge-holding. Mistrusts magic and magic-users. Wears a magnificent furred crimson cloak hooded by a bejeweled lions head, which he claims is the legendary Red Coat of Tauraven (said to have been fashioned from the pelt of the Uthgardt totem god Red Lion, by the northern slayer Tauraven).
Faerdra Thin, dark, small. Prominent cheekbones. Urbane and soft-spoken. Confidence-man and swindler of the first water. Has spent some time establishing herself as a boldblade and puissant far-trader. Sells "sail-tokens" out of the Rearing Hippocampus Inn, small ceramic shields stamped with the sigil of her fictional far-trading company. Buyers of these tokens enjoy permission to subscribe at some future time to new ("guaranteed promising and profitable, in the light of Tyr!") far-trading ventures importing tar and sail-cloth from unspecified sources in the Moonshaes. In the meantime, they finance her diversions in drink and gambling.

Sparswords Gladiators, martialists, triumphants, digladiates, dare-alls, grimshields, armipotents, bloodcoined, bloody-blades. Contests of martial skill (man vs. man and man vs. monster) have a long history in Waterdeep, even before the founding of the Field of Triumph. Once the top draw at the Field, with star combatants drowned in coinage and willing lads and lasses, such staged bouts are now discouraged by the Lords and have fallen in popularity (especially to the new sport of brightlancing). Despite that, they remain a favorite with the commoners and with Southern visitors. The fights themselves are highly stylilized, often bloody, sometimes rigged (staged, choreographed and "pre-arranged;" more often than not in the case of anticipated bouts and headlining battle-stars). Deaths happen rarely, but most contests are not meant to be fatal. Healing is available for those who choose to receive it, and the combatants are professionals or volunteers, not slaves (before entering a bout, contestants are checked for any magical compulsions to ensure they are fighting of their own free will). Drama, a good look or quirk and a stirring backstory are always the key to getting crowds to pay to watch the bouts, and Field criers roam the Market and the lower Wards loudly proclaiming each bout as an epic, ultimate battle for pride or revenge, or as some colorful spectacle "guaranteed to liven the senses and quicken the blood." A recent development is the upper tier of fighters gaining "colors," or badges, which help to further individualize and identify them. Bandannas or baldrics bearing these colors are also sold to backers to be worn or carried during bouts at the Field. The unfortunate side-effect to this has been that these colors serve much the same identifying purpose for followers of a particular sparsword, and has led to formations of "clubs" or "legions," groups of devotees who travel to bouts like gangs and are increasingly engaging in mayhem with similar mobs bearing colors of a rival combatant. Notable Sparswords include (separate entries in italics); "The Red Colossus" (The Unbeatable Abbast) Abbast el Ammarkhan, Auskerl "The Spenglid Spear," "Bold-Tongue" Bannaghus, "Bloody-Black" Bolthost, "Giant" Gurghryn, "Firethroat" Hallabaster, "Hell Roaring" Hargauth, Mammoth Mhaerd, "Man-Ogre" Mannast, "The Beast of the North" Quas Thardest, Rhūelva "Common Rhue," "The Red She-Devil" Selūnjha, "The Southern She-Devil" Sulfagha, Tarlaph the Trident, "Dragonfeared" Talefhast, Tanefalcon the Bold, Temblos "Half-Horned," "Bloody-Bladed" Tharast, Tohvruus "Two-Horned," Uftog "The Black Lion," Unvizarded Vasht, Zulduuth "Bash-n-Boast."
Uftog "The Black Lion" A member of the Black Lion Uthgardt tribe. Famed martialist at the Field of Triumph. A huge, black-haired, shaggy-bearded brute. Wields a tremendous club of oak, bound at its heavier end with a thick ring of spiked iron. Wears an impressive lions-head skullcap and bristling mane to the field, allegedly the remains of a mighty dire beast he slew bare-handed (broadcryers at the Field eagerly hawk the one-copper tale of "Mighty Uftog, The Daring Savage, Captured and Bereft of All Defense, Save His Iron Thews, Alone in the Den of the Roaring Ravager!" to spectators).
The Black Lions Backers of the sparsword Uftog "The Black Lion." Appear at the Field of Triumph for all of his matches, waving their colors (black with red diagonals) and more than willing to fight with devotees of other digladiates. Supporters dye their hair black and do their best to bristle it out, like the mane of a lion. Led informally by the butcher Gald (stout, big-bellied, balding. Wears a lion's-head hood he sewed together himself from various skins and scraps. Bears a massive quarterstaff topped with the Lion's colors, attends fights at the Field stripped down to his hood and breeches).
Temblos "Half-Horned" A minotaur martialist at the Field of Triumph. One of his horns (the right one) is indeed missing, shorn off close to his skull by the axe of an enemy in the Blood Arena of Manshanka. Although the pair never met until they set foot into the Field, sparsword promoters loudly proclaim him to be the "calving-kin" of his fellow minotaur bloodyblade Tohvruus "Two-Horned," and his fights both alongside and against his "horn-brother" are eagerly anticipated by the crowds.
