Play through the first 2 to 3 chapters of Baldur's Gate and just write down the huge amount of reference tomes found therein. |

Some D&D worlds, like Eberron got them (Morgrave University, in Sharn). FR? No idea about canonical FR though. Could sneak them in trough institutions of higher learning, universities, or as a 'colleges' making the coffers of rich patrons full of nice loot (basically, proffesional grave robbers). Ideas: Mages colleges, could have some oddball mage studying old lore. Like a specialist in Netheril. Add 2-3 curators of old artefacts, basically a bookbinder, a chemist and a artefact specialist aiding the mage. Add a narrow field, as Netheril quasimagical items, or Imaskari fiend lore. Library of Candlekeep: Basically specialists in digging up books. One or two divine spellcasters and a bard, or book antiquarian and experts in alchemy preserving old crumbling books, and some very experienced field hands who double as guards. |
