Are there any prominent dueling traditions in Faerun? Historically, brawling in the streets is usually seen as a breach of peace, and many duelling traditions have been done in private because they're illegal, but what's the word on the Sword Coast and surrounding areas?

You are allowed to challenge your enemy to a joust and meet them on the Field of Triumph.
You could challenge them to a wrestling match and meet them in the ring, while your adventuring companions bet against you.
There are also cases where a duel (or a trial by combat) might be judged by an actual judge. The Magisters of Waterdeep have been known to judge duels, from time to time. When properly formalized and done according to rules, it's not a breach of peace. In such cases, it's also usually not deadly.
To the Uthghardt Barbarians, duelling is the main way of solving major disputes. |

| There's also "spell dueling", which is mostly seen at Wizard Fairs. The rules of that are not well spelled out though, and often is simply spell comparison (i.e. who makes the biggest fireball, who makes the "best" illusion, etc..). I've personally also instituted spell dueling in most arcane academies as well, which usually involves a personally agreed upon amount of time before entering an arena for preparatory work. |
