Can anyone tell me what happened during the Harpstar Wars and what it is? All I know was that during that time, a group of maulgryms attacked Khlben but were then banished from Faerun by Elminster and a bunch of other powerful mages.

If you can find 2e's Code of the Harper's. It's detailed in there. :) |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

The "Harpstar Wars" took place in the Harpers second century of existance. According to "Code of the Harpers" the long and bloody conflict with the Malaurgrym ended when Khelban took over the body of a Shadowmaster. He infiltrated the lair of the surviving Malaurgrym and persuaded them that further antagonism would only lead to their destruction. He then took an item called the Harp of Stars which had been stolen from the Harpers. What the Malaurgrym had failed to realize was that the harp was a boobytrap created by Elminster. The harp was designed to increase shapeshifters natural ability, it also leached their life force over time. The two Master Harpers and Mages had hatched a plan to instigate the war by creating an item irresistable to the Malaurgrym and one that would weaken them severely. Hope this helps |

Thanks for the help. Is this also the reason why the malaugryms are also stuck outside of Faerun and why their planar-travelling magic is so weak? |

Honestly I'm not sure. It says that after Khelban had negotiated with them, the Malaugrym walled off their demi-plane with potent spells. It could be a combination of the two. The Malaugrym's self imposed exile and the effects of the Harp of Stars might together account for their apparent weakness |
