This is mostly relevant to people who have played steading of the Hill Giant Chief or Queen of Spiders.

My group started playing Against the Giants, and although they were having fun, by the end of the module they wanted to have more of a drow/underdark game going. This was fine because the Queen of Spiders adventure, which Against the Giants is a part of, goes in that direction. I just have to skip some stuff.
After infiltrating the Hill Giants Steading they were heading back to the Kings Hand with the information and map about a Frost Giant Lair. But they don't want to go there. They want to get hands on with the giant black orb that has cut the city in half. Well, I figure this is a perfect way to skip the rest of the Giants stuff and get to the Drow part of the adventure. So the first thing I did was uproot the game and drop it in Faerun, the North particularly. I should also note that on the way back to the Kings Hand I had two Driders attack them (you know, to get the Drow ball rolling). I figure Lolth recognizes that this party is actually capable of stopping her from pulling a bunch of parts of the world down to her Realm so she's sending agents to stop them.
NOW. Do I make it so that the big black orb above the city is actually a portal to the Underdark now? Or do I have them find the Underdark some other way? If I go with the former, which city in the North?
Second, I don't want them to go straight to it, of course. It shouldn't be that easy for them to make their way into the Underdark, even if it is through this giant black orb thing, I'm just having trouble thinking of something inspired. The best I've got right now is maybe theres a third party between lolth and the PC's who kinda come through and muck things up.
Thoughts? PS - This only uses 1st edition FR material.

Well, the classic Gold Box game, Pools of Darkness, done an adaptation of Queen of Spiders to Faerun, only replacing Lolth with a Marilith demon Kalistes. This was due to TSR not wanting to have their iconic charaters slaughtered, as explained by Dave Shelley, one of the designers. The cover of Pools of Darkness, even uses the cover of the Queen of Spiders:
