I was perusing the web for new ways to spice up religion in the Realms and came across this article:

http://tribality.com/2016/01/23/organized-faiths-and-silent-gods-redesigning-religion-in-forgotten-realms/

Basically, the gods have become silent and the different faiths have been organized into seven distinct religions. It seems like it could breathe some new life into things and create some really dynamic conflicts amongst different peoples and religions.

While the whole "gods have grown silent" thing makes more sense in his 5e realms, Im considering dropping it into my 1e game.

Thoughts?

In 5e gods are more distant, but definitely not silent. I personally don't think that these conglomerates of religions are needed to bring conlfict among faiths, and that it doesn't go well with the many small faiths that Ed wanted in the setting. However, it's your game, so if you like the idea, you should definitely go ahead.

Interesting, but I doubt if Cyrinists and Bane worshippers, could get along enough to form an unified religion. Yes, some worshippers of Bane worshipped for time Cyric, when Cyric was at his strongest, but the majority of them almost intantly switched to Iyachtu Xvim, when the Bane-son was released and ascended to full divinity.
Cyric's worshippers are also known for a form of henotheism, often very fervently, so I doubt they would agree to have Cyric as subvinient to another deity, and Cyrinists often insane, which would go against the orderly manner The Iron Dominion is organized.

The rest seems more plausuable, even Elahnism with Malar being worshipped alongside Selune and Eldath, as the dogmas of Selune's and Eldath's faitfull, are argubly more compatible with Malar's, than those of worshippers of Bane, and Cyrinists.

I'm not buying it. Its too established with these deities forming their own new pantheons. Personally, I see it more that certain areas will favor certain gods more than others with similar aspects. For instance, Chauntea will be worshipped in Turmish, but Silvanus will attract more nature worshippers generally in that area. However, in the North near Waterdeep, Chauntea will gain more followers. Near the high forest, it will be Mielikki and Lurue, etc... Similarly, some areas may favor Lliira more than Sharess, or Sune more than Hanali. One country may favor the red knight (Tethyr?) and yet that deity's worship is little seen in nearby Calimshan. The big thing also that I see is that these "allegiances" will be in a state of near constant flux, as some priest shows up and helps the people. The locals might have favored Azuth for magic.... until Deneir came to town and started teaching all the children how to read and write better.

Alavairthae, may your skill prevail
