So recently started up a new story arc in the Forgotten Realms (Murder in Baldur's Gate), and I've left it up to the players whether they wanted to continue with 4e or change over to Pathfinder or 5e or whatever, they decided on 5e, so we're doing 5e, the magic system of 5e is very much like old school D&D, so easy enough to just say ok the Weave is back so magic functions much like it used to before the Spellplague, but this raises some questions, that hopefully you all can answer.
Would the 4e style of magic still work? Does every spell caster in Toril now have to relearn magic again? Would magic be unstable like during the Time of Troubles? Or did Mystra magically convert everyone's 4e spells to 5e spells? Since 4e casters didnt seem to need the Weave to cast spells, would someone trained in the 4e style of magic be able to cast spells in a magic dead zone? Should I just do alot of hand waving and say magic is magic its just different rules systems interpret it differently?
Also, is there an exact date on the return of Mystra and the restoration of the Weave?

Mystra and the Weave fully restored in 1487 DR, IIRC. However, the Weave was never gone. From ''Spellstorm'':
quote: [...]El shook is head. ''Dead but not gone, only silent. For Mystra is the Weave, and throghout all of this, there was always a Weave, however weak and damaged and imperiled. [...] If Mystra had been utterly destroyed, her essence scattered, the Weave would have collapsed and the old ways of wielding magic with it. We came close to that[...]
So, it might be entirely possible that spells were casted through the ''Strands of Weave'' that remained, rather than through an entirely different way (and it would make sense, because, according to ''Magic of Faerun'': With the Weave gone, raw magic quickly dissipates from the world, but only after disrupting existing magic and lashing out at nearby magical conductors).
With a renewed Weave, casters would only have an easier life. As for the rules, ''4e spells'' and so on: they are just mechanics. Consider their effect and find the 5e equivalent in the spell list. |

I asked about the Demon Weave in Ed's thread at the beginning of last year. Work on restoring the Weave was begun by the remaining active Chosen of Mystra in 1479 DR, the whole 'Rise of the Underdark' debacle occurred between 1480 and 1485, during which the two Weaves coexisted.
Drow spellcasters with access to the Demon Weave could cast spells exactly like they could BEFORE the Spellplague using the Demon Weave, so it seems that throughout those six years, the 4e spellcasting method was still the norm even though Mystra was on her way back (to answer your final question, Mystra's return is mentioned as being in Kythorn of 1479 DR, though she is not restored to her full strength until the Weave is fixed, which I think occurs in Marpenoth of 1487 DR).
Three times in the past (after the fall of Netheril; after the Time of Troubles; and after the Spellplague), all arcane spellcasters had to relearn how to use their magic, though (with the exception of Netheril) they were not particularly diminished in power once they'd succeeded. Each time the relearning process has been different, so it's hard to say for sure whether the 4e method is still usable in the most up-to-date Realms - though I should note that nobody has said anything about relearning magic again after the Sundering (which could be part of WotC's efforts to make all editions of the Realms inclusive). I very much doubt that you'll get a definitive answer, at least not for a long time. |
