Something someone said in another thread made me wonder for a second (and maybe its answered in that thread, but I wanted to ask this before I forget).

We know that if a gold elf and a moon elf mate, the child will be either a gold or moon elf. So, if a gold elf and a dark elf prior to the dark elves being changed had been married, they might have had kids who were dark elves and kids who were gold elves, but they'd share the same surname. Then, the change happens, and the dark elves are all turned into drow. So, the same surname might be in use for both surface and drow elves. Do we have any of these in canon lore? Just curious.

I seem to recall that any elf mating with a dark elf the children favor the dark elf side. This was prior the Descent too. I want to say the novel Evermeet as a source? I'll see if I can find where I read that at.

It was from Elaine's Daughter of the Drow, describing a settlement in the High Forest of Vhaeraun-worshipping drow with a harem of moon elves (in the absence of drow females):
quote:
Vhaeraun's peoople sought contact with other elves. Children of such unions tended to breed toward drow. Taking a long view, it was one way to eradicate the pale races of elves!

On the other hand, RAS' descriptions of Doum'wielle, the daughter of drow & moon elf parents, suggest that such offspring are indeed mixed, not breedi ng 100% true to one race or the other. In Night of the Hunter:
quote:
....her silvery skin, skin that spoke of her mixed elf and drow heritage.

and in Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf:
quote:
Half of Doum'wielle's blood was made up of....surface elf heritage

Hmmm, I don't typically take anything in RAS' stories to changing canon. I get that the whole construct was to make the rules easier for elven races, but at the same time they didn't feel the need to do that same type of ruling for the other demihuman races (though at the time, whether they had listed out different racial abilities for Halfling and dwarf sub-races would be something I'd admittedly have to look up). That is interesting with the Elves of Evermeet entry though.
