So I've done a spot of reading since the last time I posted in this thread... I finished the listed books, and then read these. There was a road trip in there, so that gave me a lot of reading time.

Superheroine Complex
The Invisible Library
The Night Manager
No Hero
Invasive
The Ripper Affair

I'm reading the newest Star Wars book, Catalyst, right now.

Of the listed books, I quite enjoyed them all, except for The Night Manager. That was one of those that was just interesting enough that I wanted to see what happened, but otherwise utterly lacking. It became one of those "I want to be finished with this damn book so I can get on to something else!" types... And the ending left enough questions to be quite unsatisfying.

Mostly enjoy Stormlight and Elantris, Mistborn not so much, I've read it only cause there will be another Mistborn trilogy with allomancy in space. From Arcanum Unbound I expected a lot more about his cosmology, so far what's revealed is nothing spectacular (compared to D&D's for example).

Just finished up Drizzt's collection last week. Well, the main series. Off too one of my favorite trilogies I wish they'd find a way to continue. The Haunted Lands. Then going to try to read some Elminster. So far I know the least about him.

Doing my kinda-sorta-annual reread of The Lord of the Rings right now. Currently on The Return of the King.

I'm not really sure what will be up next. I may re-read Ready Player One some time soon; it's a personal fave that I generally re-read at the beginning of the year (because that was when I first read it, and I didn't let myself re-read it as soon as I wanted to, the first time).

Ready player one was a GREAT read. Kind of forgot about it though until you just mentioned it. Going to have to add that to the read list now.

Currently reading Prudence, book one of The Custard Protocol. It's steampunk with vampires and werewolves, who are actually integrated into polite society. And the main character has the interesting ability to steal the abilities of a vampire or werewolf she comes into direct, skin to skin contact with. She has to stay near them, but it's a nifty thing.

I'm rather enjoying it.

I quite enjoyed Prudence; it's making my list for best new reads of the year, and I'm going to be grabbing the sequel rather soon.

Now I'm reading one called Killfile. It's a lot like your typical spy/action thrillers: guy gets tasked to do a specific thing, gets burned, and winds up on the run with very limited resources, an attractive woman, and an enemy that seems almost omnipresent and unstoppable.

The main difference between this one and the rest of the genre is the main character. Instead of being some sort of supersoldier who can kill you 14 different ways with his buttcheeks alone, he's a telepath. He mostly reads minds, but he's got some other things he can do with someone's gray matter, and that gives him options the other fictitious action heroes don't have.

That twist on the common theme really makes the book different, and I'm quite eager to see how the whole thing plays out.

I really, really enjoyed Killfile. If the action/spy/thriller thing is your gig, give it a try.

Now I'm reading a book called Ink and Bone. It's set slightly in the future, but with more of a steampunk tech level -- though that's not been a focus, yet, and so it doesn't really come across as a steampunk novel. The premise is an alt-history where the Library of Alexandria was not destroyed, but instead thrived and expanded into other cities. The Library has very strictly controlled access to the written word; it's illegal to even own a book unless you've got special dispensation.

The Library does have this nifty thing called mirroring, which allows them to distribute books (and newspapers) that are copies of originals, but are not permanent copies -- they can be erased or changed by the Library at any time. It's an alchemical thing.

The Library appears to hold a position of power similar to the Catholic Church in medieval Europe, to the point of having their own military and having their own guards, and local law enforcement cannot step on Library grounds, even in pursuit of a criminal who they can see and who just fled onto Library grounds. There's also a rival group called the Burners who oppose the Library's control of knowledge; they are actually considered heretics.

The main character is the son of a book smuggler who is trying to earn a position in the Library. His dad pushed him in that direction, but Jess has enough of a reverence for books that he truly does want the position.

Right now, he's going through the rather rough training process, which is also eliminating potential candidates -- sometimes, literally, on a throw of the dice.

I finished the Nightrunner a while back now (awesome read), and I have read a few other things since then.

I've been reading manga lately. The book series I am currently trying to struggle through has all the potential of a good fantasy series, but it is rather badly written. The dialogue in particular is bad, the characters are inconsistent, and it's just...been hard to read.

The last book I mentioned here, Ink and Bone, was very enjoyable. I'm not sure if the next book is out yet or not, but I'll definitely be picking it up.

I'm currently reading one called Just One Damned Thing After Another, which focuses on one young woman who is recruited to join an eclectic bunch of time-traveling historians.

I've been enjoying the book enough that I went to the bookstore this day to pick up the next two books, discovered a fourth, and bought that one, too!

I finished the 4 books I had of the Chronicles of St Mary's books... I ordered the fifth from the Amazon, and will likely order the 6th later this week. The 7th gets reprinted later this year; I'll buy it when it comes out.

That's the series I referenced earlier, about the time-traveling historians. It's a fun series; I quite recommend it. The first book is called Just One Damned Thing After Another, and just the name should give you a hint about the nature of the books.

I'm currently reading Imprudence, the second book of the Custard Protocol. Assuming I finish that one before the other St. Mary's book comes in, I don't know what I'll read next! I've been thinking of reading the Daedalus books, though -- it's a series where a hard sci-fi future Earth universe winds up bleeding into an alt-history Earth universe, where the British are trying to subdue the rebellious colonies calling themselves the United States of Ganymede (they use alchemy for space travel, and that Earth has no New World).

Just finished the Jumper series on which the movie was loosely based. The fourth book, Exo was outstanding.

I think the Gilded Rune is definitely worth reading. It focuses on a "stoneplague" that strikes the dwarves of the Great Rift and how they go about curing it. Good book if you like dwarves.

Thanks!

On another matter, I have the whole of the Drizzt-Salvatore series. I bought them in my early youth, where innocence was abundant in me... I *tried* to read them again recently, but I couldn't manage to, because I think they are, well, somewhat boring. Is this anyone else's opinion?

I've recently been working my way through the Drizzt e-books that I have (i.e. most of them), and Drizzt is almost my least favourite character of the series (the dubious honour of 'least favourite character' is jointly awarded to all the minor characters with terrible names, of which there are many in RAS' novels). Drizzt gets on my nerves - a preachy goody-too-shoes, whose only flaw is that he's too good. I greatly sympathize when Dahlia rolls her eyes at him.

Apart from Drizzt, I like the way that drow are portrayed in the various FR novels, so I've decided to work my way (again) through the following (basically following Quenthel & other denizens of Menzo in chronological order):

Starlight & Shadows trilogy
War of the Spider Queen series
The Lady Penitent series
Drizzt novels from Night of the Hunter onwards

Indeed one of the most enjoyable section of the Drizzt series is how the Drow are portrayed. Because it is well known that they are evil, but Salvatore does a good job giving an inside peak at their family, city and gang inner machinations.

That said, the almost-too-good part of the Drizzt description you gave is on the opposite side of the spectrum. Sometimes it's unrealistic to be that self-doubting; I mean self-inspection has to have its limits and IMHO Salvatore goes too far with this. For just one example, blaming himself about the young female elf that later became one of his archenemies (I forget the name) is beyond reason.

Other than than, the books are enjoyable. It's just that reading about the protagonist's thoughts sometimes gets tiring and I find myself skipping some pages. Which isn't exactly flattering for a book. Of course that's just my opinion and I'm just sharing here. I will be happy to be convinced to think differently about these books.

P.S.: Oh man, I can't read e-novels nor e-books... How do you manage that?

Just finished one called Kings of the Wyld. The basic idea for the book -- according to the author's interview in the back of the book -- was wondering what it would be like if mercenary bands were treated like rock stars? And in fact, the merc band the book focuses on, Saga, was built with a rock band in mind.

The book is regular fantasy fare, with enough references to certain critters to convince me the author plays a lot of D&D. Rather than call the wandering swordswingers adventurers, though, they are all referred to as mercenary bands. And some of the names are very rock-band inspired. (Heck, the wizard is named after a synthesizer company, and his late husband was named Freddie. There's also a great reference to Elvis)

The book focuses on Saga, a mercenary band that was very famous 20 years before. They've all gone their separate ways and made new lives (one of them even became a king). One of the members has a daughter who decides to follow in her father's footsteps, and winds up trapped in a besieged city. So that guy has to round up his friends -- the phrase "getting the band back together" is used more than once -- to go and rescue his daughter.

Surprisingly, a lot of the book is just getting the guys back together. But the book is a lot of fun, and I think it handled the concept of getting a bunch of middle-aged guys back into the saddle pretty well. There's some nice bits of humor scattered throughout, too.

This one has my recommendation.

Next up is Empire State, about a parallel-world Manhattan with magic and gangsters. After that, I'll likely get back to the goofy fun of the Chronicles of St. Mary's books.

I am currently reading LoD Exile, the second of only 3 Forgotten Realms books that I own, the third being Sojourn.

I have the Icewind Dale Trilogy on the way to me, plus the Drizzt anthology. I also just now bought the first Elminster book, and Blackstaff. Not sure if those were good choices, but I guess I'll find out. I just figured I'd get something else so I can take occasional breaks from the Drizzt stuff. Don't wanna burn out on drow.
