| Well, I am currently reading some FR novels, but before that I just finished reading David Brin. I read Sundiver, Startide Rising, and about 100 pages of the Uplift War before I gave up on it. David Brin is one of those big names in Sci-Fi and I remember seeing these books as a kid and thinking, hmmmm I should read those. He is amazing at world building but the pace of the books was very slow and he could have cut a lot out. Plus, I started to notice he really liked to talk about the sex lives of dolphins and chimpanzees to the point where it started to creep me out. I definitely started to get a weird Piers Anthony feeling about the books. Still, if there was more action and less set up I could have gutted out the last book, but ... oh wait, yea there was a lot of talk about alien/human sex .... |

I felt the same way reading Time Enough for Love by Heinlein. It seemed like the author was deliberately trying to present as many odd sexual setups as possible... There was a couple that agreed to have sex without either person knowing the other's gender or first name or appearance, there was the main character raising a orphaned girl and later having kids with her, there was a brother/sister pairing in which it was for some reason very significant that they could have kids with each other without concerns about recessive genes, there was the main character sleeping with female clones of himself, and then him going back in time and sleeping with his own mother.
Some of the other parts of the story were good, there was just too much focus on all the different sexual pairings -- to the point they were more memorable than the story, and not in a good way. |

Heinlein is one of those writers who has not held up well for me. Yes, I know he is that big name in Sci-Fi and everyone talks about Stranger in a Strange Land. I remember when my friend read it in high school and gave it to me to read. At that point I thought Heinlein had these really deep things to say about humanity. That book also has a lot of weird sexual stuff going on. I am not a prude nor do I morally condemn anyone for their preferences, but it felt like he was doing it more to shock people rather than for anything else. At this point I wouldn't go back and read any of his work. On the other side of that coin, I reread the foundation trilogy by Asimov and I thought it held up really well. |

| Starting Brimstone Angels. I own 4 of the 6 books in the series. Wish the last 2 weren't so hard to find at a reasonable price in massmarket paperback. |

I found it is generally the first two harder to find at good price.
I'm currently reading Against the Horde, the first US edition of Legend by David Gemmell as published by New Infinities Productions. |

Just finished Rhythm of War by Brandan Sanderson. That dude knows how to write an epic scope but still keep you engaged.

| Alongside the usual glut of fanfiction I read, I'm re-reading the Last Mythal trilogy and about to start reading the Dragonlance Chronicles again because I hear Weis and Hickman are working on a new trilogy. Been ages so I need to refresh my memory. |

Currently reading a slightly older Shadowrun sourcebook, some manga I've not touched in years, and the ebook of Old Man's War.
I've read some BattleTech ebooks, lately, too.
I'm trying to read more gaming material, graphic novels, and manga, this year, rather than let them gather dust whilst I read novels... But I recently discovered that my habit of reading whilst I eat doesn't work well with manga, so I'm currently reading one thing whilst I eat, one thing whilst reading with my son, and another thing whilst in my "reading room." |

This is going to sound a little goofy, but if you actually actively try to say the words out loud (not in your head) some of them actually work. Stlarn for instance is just a minor modification on where your tongue starts in your mouth (just as an experiment, look at something when your alone, think how much you hate it and say "stlarn it" and compare that to saying "darn it"). Sark is an easy replacement (say "sark it all" out loud). Then look at something else and think that you want to tell it to go away and say "sabruin yourself" and then compare it to "f*ck yourself". Hrast and Haularake I still have problems with mind you, but I was surprised that I could make the others work. To note, when I get mad, I already try to use "fracking" from Battlestar Galactica whenever I can make my mind replace it..... and yes, I got into some bad habits of swearing like a sailor as I grew up, such that I don't even realize I'm doing it. |

I have tried. I've no idea how hrast is said, and the tl combo in stlarn and tluin just doesn't flow. |

To my ear they would work better as shorter words with less in the way of tongue movement to say them. The sort of blunt, brief profanity that will be blurted out when you stub your toe or step on a child's lego blocks at night (which through some strange oddity of universal law always seem to have the pointiest sides facing up).
So "hast" or "rast" ("rast it" feels like it could over time even merge into just "rastit" like how "damn it" becomes "dammit") instead of "hrast", "starn" instead of "stlarn", or "tuin" instead of "tluin". |

| Just finished The Night Parade (Harper series, book 4). Despite having an interesting protagonist and little discussed topics, such as grief and loss of loved ones, the story was not so good, with confusing plot twists. I hope the next Harper books are as good as the first ones. |

Just finished the immortal Cormyr by Ed and Jeff. It was a good read the first thousand times, and still is!
Starting up with the Druidhome trilogy again - been a while since I've read the books, but I remember them as pleasant reads :) |

| Just finished The Moonshae trilogy (Douglas Niles). It is very satisfying to read the first Realms novels. Even if sometimes you get the impression that we´re not really there, it´s understandable, and the main story has a strong appeal. |

So my most recent reads...
Master of Djinn -- kind of steampunk, with djinn and related magical critters, set in early 1900s Cairo
Six-Gun Tarot -- my first time reading anything of the Weird West genre. I've picked up the next book in the series.
Blameless -- the third book of the Parasol Protectorate. Steampunk, but with werewolves and vampires, as well -- as members of polite society, at least in England. It's a really fun series. Steampunk action, high-society manners, and some great bits of humor sprinkled here and there. This is the one I'm reading right now. |

Love Steampunk... it´s a shame there aren´t many novels of the genre. Read recently Boneshaker (Cherie Priest), a story involving a Steampunk version of a decadent Seattle. Thank you for the suggestions! |
