I decided that we weren't going to continue using the 2014 reading discussion... So here's a new one for the new year!
(And since this thread has but a few pages, might as well use it for 2017, as well.)
(Only up to 11 pages, so might as well continue for another year.)
November 2020: This hasn't been the most prolific thread, so I'm tweaking the title again and letting it ride a while longer.

I just finished Yamada Monogatari: To Break the Demon Gate, the sequel to Yamada Monogatari: Demon Hunter. The first book was an anthology of tales about a kinda disgraced nobleman Yamada no Goji, a kind of investigator/ghost hunter, living in Japan around 1071-ish AD. The second book reprints one of the tales from the first, but then spins the whole thing into a much larger tale.
I found both books quite enjoyable, and I'm hoping my local Barnes & Noble has the third one, Yamada Monogatari: The War God's Son. I don't know why I didn't buy that one when I was in Greenville and found it... I tried to hit the bookstore after work last night, but they'd closed early, and when I tried this morn, they were opening late!  
After that, I think I'm going to embark on some re-reads. It's been a while since I read Harry Potter, and I usually read Ready Player One and The Rook at the beginning of the year, as well -- when I first read both books, it was at the beginning of the year, and I really wanted to reread them again soon after, but made myself wait. So it's close to becoming a tradition.

Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence, book one of the Red Queen's War Trilogy.
Set in the world of the Broken Empire trilogy, this story tells a vastly different tale than its predecessor. We follow Prince Jalan Kendeth, grandson of the Red Queen, and his companion Snorri Snagason on a journey to the Norway. They're hounded by agents of the Dead King and pursued by the cryptic prophecy of the Red Queen's advisor-assassin, the Silent Sister.
Whereas Jorg was the ultimate pragmatist - doing what he needed to in order to survive and thrive in a long game to "fix" the Broken Empires - Jalan is a laid back gambler with a philosophy that its best to "keep things shallow - you'll drown if you go too deep." Snorri also shows more cunning than you'd expect from a Viking. It looks to be a fun series. |

I quite enjoyed that one, myself... But I didn't know there was a predecessor book. Is it the same setting, or just another tale by the same author? |

I started the year by finishing David Chandler's Den of Thieves. I liked the plot and story but something about the book bothered me. I think it was the characters and dialogue. But it got better towards the end so I'll give the follow up a try.
Next I read In the Best Families a Nero Wolfe mystery by Rex Stout. Pretty good, but not quite on par with his other Nero Wolfe books.
Now will probably read A Thief in the Night by David Chandler (the afore mentioned follow up to Den of Thieves). |

| After finishing the Yamada Monogatari books (which I would highly recommend!), I delved into the reread pile. I've read Ready Player One (most highly recommended!) and Armada, and now I'm on The Rook. Unless something else catches my eye in the next few days, I'll be revisiting Hogwarts after that. |

Finished A Thief in the Night book #2 in the Ancient Blades trilogy by David Chandler. This one was better than the first but still disappointing.
Now reading Hunter's Run by George R.R. Martine, Daniel Abraham, and Gardner Dozois. So far so good. |

I made it to the second Harry Potter book, but then the library called and announced they had the newest Safehold book, Hell's Foundations Quiver. I've really been enjoying that series, so I've been working on that book.
A further delay will be when the book Ex-Isle comes out this week. It's the next book in that superheroes/post-zombie apocalypse series I've been enjoying. |

I just finished Ashes of the Tyrant. Loved it.
Today is the day I break my 2 years long Forgotten-Realms-Books-Streak.
I just started The Name of the Wind. I'm hoping it's good as they say...

I picked that one up when it came out and tore right thru it.
I also found the cover artist's website, and he had a "clean" (no title or anything) copy of the cover art up on his site. That image wound up being the wallpaper on my phone for a while. |

I am re-reading Steven Erikson for the third or fourth time. MBotF is just one of my favorite series of all time.
For Wise Man Fears, I really enjoyed the content. But you could feel the tragedy leaping off the pages at you. I don't enjoy tragic writing, and that kind of put me off the book. I assume though that Kvothe will recover at the end of the 3rd book... hopefully. |

I didn't feel it as utterly tragic. i felt more tragedy in The Name of the Wind... Ambrose, there, is ten times worst than a Draco Malfoy (i'm talking about school bully, that's all).
I didnt like the Adem part, i felt it was too long, and i didnt find interesting characters, imho.
i really loved "Elderberry" chapter, it made me wonder if kvothe already understood the trick, and underlined Bast's obsessive love for his Reshi... Fantastic character. |

Just curious about other fantasy to try these days, so I'll chime in again.
Finished Bones of the Dragon by Weis & Hickman. Not stellar, but I've enjoyed watching the gifted hero ruin everything.
I have Ashes of the Tyrant on the docket.
Also, I have only now decided to make my way through Robin Hobb; Ship of Destiny will finish off the trilogy, and I can return to reading of the Fool!!
Library doesn't have Spellstorm by Greenwood, so I figured I'd buy the paperback and donate it when I'm done. |
