I've recently noticed that sometimes there are art pieces in the 3.X art gallery archives that are not rendered anywhere in their respective sourcebooks. In this case I'm curious about Gruulath the Beholder (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ag/20050209a&page=3 , http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/images/leof_gallery/86716.jpg) and almost even more so about the elven ruins he seems to be hovering about in. If artwork got commissioned for him (her, hem, it...) I'm guessing that there was already lore written on this mysterious beholder, but that it ended on the cutting floor.
Can anyonoe help me in this investigation?

Maybe these images were just extra renderings that they didn't have room for in the sourcebook but decided to post online to share anyway. |

Was it mentioned in LEoF? FRindex doesn't show this name.
May be as a mistake. Sometimes galleries have mistakes. Case in point: here "beguiler" label is duplicated, obviously none of them being one (a proper beguiler is on the next page)... "Luiren Marchwarden" also duplicated, and one of them is a kreen. And "Halruaan Elder"...
On the other eyestalk, LEoF gallery seems to be good. On yet another eyestalk, Cloak & Dagger gallery has a picture explicitly marked as "(Web Exclusive)"
So my bet is on cut content too, but that's still a gamble. |

I don't believe it to be a mistake. Lady Syleda Krimmevol is another great example. I don't think that art would have been commissioned for her if there wasn't originally supposed to be more lore about her than what we got. I guess only somebody who was 'in house' back then would be able to give us an answer. |

I'll check my LEoF stuff. That product had substantial re-writes.

Found it. The original "Cormanthyr" chapter contained an adventure titled "Windsong Tower Crypt", which featured Gruulath the beholder. Fairly linear dungeon with no realmslore or anything noteworthy in it. I recall it got cut as we used the room to put more lore in.

So he was just a random BBEG for the adventure, with nothing more noteworthy than a name? |

But at least we now know what the interior of the Windsong Tower crypt looks like ^_^ Thanks a lot! |
