Hi, I am pretty new to the Realms but I have on face to face game running set currently in the Dalelands and a second group of players I want to start out in Waterdeep.
The games are set about 15 years after the time of troubles.
I have read the campaign guide and my players are doing the trouble under the twisted tower adventure from that book. The second group will be doing a plot I have written myself.
About Waterdeep I have read the City of Splendor and the North source book but what else should I read to cram the most lore and get the most out of this region?

The first 2 books of the Icewind Dale trilogy are set in the north. The Twilight Giants trilogy is set in the often ignored area of Hartsvale which is located north of Anauroch. The Hunter's Blade Trilogy takes place in the Silver Marches. Those should get you started nicely. |

Volo's Guide to the North. It is written from a first person perspective but the descriptions from that feet-on-the-ground POV would definitely add the right amounts of color and culture to the lands all around the city state of Waterdeep as well as the people must likely to swell the ranks of the city during the summertime. |
Make the best use of the system that's there, then modify the mechanics that don't allow you to have the fun you are looking for. |

The 3E FRCS, Silver Marches, and The Orc King are set about the time of your campaigns. The two North guidebooks cover more ground, but they're set earlier than the ones that I mentioned. |

FR5 Savage Kingdoms is pretty much the same as the North boxset, a lot of overlap. But it still has a few unique tidbits of lore. |

Elminster's Forgotten Realms is something I'd recommend for everyone playing in the FR - especially for matters Cormyr and Waterdhavian; there's a lot of neat tidbits from those two regions. For instance, you'll find a rather elaborate explanation about forms of address among waterdhavian nobles, and the City Watch.
However, the entire book is useful, period. Pure fluff, and with some details you are unlikely to find elsewhere in that amount. Details about different clergy and the associated worshippers, food and drink, feasts, the way magic is seen and reacted to, and so on. |

I believe Ayrik meant Savage Frontier, just to avoid some confusion :) +10 to Volo's Guide, they are entertaining reads AND useful. |

I had never even opened a Vovo's guide until this morning. I have a great big box full of stuff that is all ad&d 2nd edition, FR modules, novels and FR source books.
I have started with the Volo's dalelands as I have a group of players currently under the twisted tower and then I will get back to my waterdeep and northern studying as I have a second campaign starting this summer there. |

Volo's Guide to Waterdeep is the book that changed me from being a casual fan of the setting to being a serious fan of the setting. |

Most are well used, pencil jottings in the margins, I can see where some poor character bit the dust. Some maps have suffered from being folded back and forth too much but I am not going to complain. I think Faerun is one of the two most developed and rich game settings ever created, the other being middle earth. |
