While reading I prefer complete silence.
For gaming we always used some kind of soft classical or epic movie soundtrack like Braveheart. |

| When I'm not running a game the guy who GMs the most for me likes to play music but his selections leave a lot to be desired (and when he plays the Morrowind soundtrack I'm always subconsciously paranoid about being attacked by cliff racers, which is distracting). When I am running a game, I don't often play music but when I do it's always really epic choral pieces for boss fights. |

| I can't listen to background music while running a game. It distracts me and I can't focus. I don't have a problem while playing a single PC. While reading, it just depends on my mood. Sometimes, I want total silence (well, as much silence as you can get in a house with seven active cats.) Other times, I'm most likely listening to Blackmore's Night or something similar. Same goes for when I'm plotting stuff for adventures or campaigns. |

I DM and play to a mix of metal. Fantasy metal, folk metal, atmospheric "black" metal, old thrash metal, and a very choice selection of "Nu metal". I prefer metal with clean female vocals, and very limited 'cookie monster" vocals as I find that distracting. I prefer metal bands that deal with fantasy themes such as Battlelore but without being cheesy or dumb (like Nightwish or DragonForce...HATE that band). Battlelore is a great example of a band the evokes all kinds of imagery with it's sound, but isn't distracting.
Fantasy metal: Battlelore, Doomsword, Demons and Wizards, Iced Earth, Amaran
Folk metal: Tyr, Wintersun
Thrash: Cirith Ungol, Metallica, Megadeth, Exmortus
Atmospheric "Black" metal: Draconian, Lethian Dreams
"Nu" metal: Lacuna Coil, Shadowside, Swallow The Sun
For some reason I find this mixture of metal and a small amount of wine seems to activate the creative part of my brain. I find that I can act, improvise and generally create better content on the fly.
I find symphonic music and sound tracks distracting. I can't help but envision whatever movie/show the music comes from.
I blame my proclivity for metal on my friends when I was very young and first started playing D&D. We would play all night, and fall asleep at the table with "Master of Puppets" and "...Kill 'Em All" on loop in the CD changer. I can't help but think I was somehow subconsciously reprogrammed to associate this music with D&D. :)

I've never used music during gaming before, partly because I'm a mutant who rarely listens to music at all so it just never occurs to me, but I recently rediscovered "The Definitive D&D Soundtrack" by Mike Selinker in Dragon #275. (Way too full of details to summarize, but I'm happy to report that there's no Bieber or Backstreet Boys in Mike's recommendations.)

I am similar in not liking computer/video game music; I actually don't have speakers on my computer, and when I play a console game, it's frequently with the volume off and the radio on.
For RPGs, though, I've never played in a game where the DM relied on background music. |

Oh, I'm a huge fan of music, and I've got quite the eclectic collection... I've just never gamed with it.
Though there was one song... There's a really cool song in the old game Chrono Cross, the far-lesser sequel to the wonderful Chrono Trigger. Despite the typical fantasy tech level, one of the characters has what sounds like an electric guitar, and there's a scene where he plays this song that I really love. Google "Chrono Cross Magical Dreamers"; the first hit is the song on Youtube.
Back on topic... I seem to recall TSR releasing a CD for background music for gaming. Anyone else recall that? |

I think remember two soundtrack sorta cds from D&D products... one from the Karameikos box for sure, and I think one from a Planescape product.
Edit: the Karameikos one was specifically aimed at the adventure material within that product. |
