Indentured servants are mentioned a few times in sourcebooks for Amn, but I couldn't find a great deal of information on them
To what extent is indentured servitude similar to slavery? How is it different? How are children born to servants handled? Do servants have rights? Are servants considered people under the law? Do servant contracts have a "minimum fairness"?

Below from a Wikipedia article on this type of thing. Essentially, people became indentured servants through a contract. They agreed to perform X service for X years in return for some kind of up front loan. In Amn, I could see this working somewhat like serfdom, where rich land owners tell people that if they'll clear a piece of land, grow crops, etc... then after providing an acceptable profit they can own said land. Of course, the rich land owners may sabotage these land owners near the end of their contracts, such that they can't meet their quotas (by maybe redirecting water to neighboring properties that have recently signed similar contracts, so that they appear successful at first).
Indentured servitude was a voluntary labour system where by young people paid for their passage to the New World by working for an employer for a certain number of years. It was widely employed in the 18th century in the British colonies in North America and elsewhere. It was especially used as a way for poor youth in Britain and the German states to get passage to the American colonies. They would work for a fixed number of years, then be free to work on their own. The employer purchased the indenture from the sea captain who brought the youths over; he did so because he needed labour. Some worked as farmers or helpers for farm wives, some were apprenticed to craftsmen. Both sides were legally obligated to meet the terms, which were enforced by local American courts. Runaways were sought out and returned. About half of the white immigrants to the American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries were indentured. |

| Oh, and it also being indentured servants..... maybe some Amnians were booking passage to Maztica, since Amn had land there as well. |
