This months Preview column offers, among other excerpts, a third and final preview of the upcoming Player's Guide to Faerun. The preview is called Variants: Races with Level Adjustments, and I think the subject matter is rather obvious.

Anyway as usual, I'd like to hear what you think about these rules, or any of the other PGtF previews released so far...

I thought the idea of level-adjustment was obvious. I'd already assumed that negative level thing was in the rules someplace.

As for the regional feat limitation, why'd they add that? I liked it the way it was in 3e.

As I said, I thought the subject matter was rather obvious. I've read this elsewhere, in fact I think it's also detailed in the SRD.

As for the regional feat limitation...well, I've read nothing so far that actually justifies the reason for this, and until I do I'm probably just going to ignore it in my games for the time being...

Sounds fine to me. I'm doing a lot of similar things -- like ignoring the full write-up of the Jump skill in 3.5e. Not that I have any real choice in the matter, at least until I do DMing of my own.

Yes, the 'Jump' skill revision has it's problems. In fact I overlooked most of the revised skills in the 3.5e PHB, at least, those 3.0e skills that I was happy with and thought didn't need the revision...

Personally, I think that was the only thing I didn't like in the skills section. I especially liked the increase in possible synergy bonuses. But perhaps we should talk about this elsewhere. Perhaps an old scroll on 3.5, or a new one on what people are keeping and loosing.

I would agree, however I don't think most of our fellow scribes here have made the transition to 3.5e rules. So, besides creating another scroll were you and I can just chat away, it's probably not worth it...

Well I suppose, but it's probably best for me to play it 'safe'...I'm already treading on thin ice with Alaundo as it is...

Ack, I try to avoid reading excepts....especially FR product excepts as I like the excitement to build up for when I get the actual product in my hands [insert "geek" smiley here]

Anyway, were you pleased\impressed by the except, Sage\Bookwyrm\anyone? Im particulary looking forward to this product, I hope the current events review section is up to my expectations.

As do I, and yes I have been impressed with the excerpts...at least the two previous examples. This last excerpt, as I've already stated doesn't really provide anything useful, at least for me.

I'm assuming that it's already obvious, but one of the main sections of this time that I've been eagerly anticipating is the 'Cosmology' chapter. I'm hoping there's going to be at least some form of revision with Toril's planar makeup.

I'm most eager to see this section probably over anything else. It had better be well done and live up to your expectations and my own.

I'm not really that concerned with the current events section, at least in terms of campaign usage. For my own personal knowledge of Realmslore it would be nice to have things up-to-date, but since most of the last few years of my own FR campaign hasn't really progressed at the same rate as the official Realms, nor had the same events occur, there won't be much use for that material in my games.

As long as you keep having novels like the last Sembia one that are clear on when the novel takes place or at least begins, then the need for a comprehensive current events section won't be that paramount in a product like this one. However, not every novel or series follows the pattern of being clear on dates. Hence, even if a campaign does differ from the published world (No Shade return I take it? ), a good current events section would be helpful in answering questions posed on messageboards like this about when XXX book takes place. I know if I've seen such questions, be it here or at that other messageboard that shall not be named, you probably have as well.

Indeed I have seen these questions, and you are right...having access to such current information would be helpful.

As for the 'Shade Return'...while the Shadow Enclaves did make a return in my FR campaign, the events leading up to, and after that event have been very different...In fact the Silver Marches region is still under threat from Shade attacks.

So Evereska isn't in need of FEMA funds to help rebuild it in your world?

...No, the realm of Evereska is still 'relatively' intact, but the elves have had to open their borders somewhat to accomodate the flow of some of the refugees heading south from the Silver Marches. Tilverton is still a smoking crater though...
