"He almost achieved lesser god status when his cult blossomed during the Harpstar Wars but the concerted effort of Bane, Bhaal, Loviatar and Talona crushed his followers to prevent such an occurrence."
That should give you an idea. |

| In 2e he is a Demipower, his story significantly linked to the Cult of the Dragon, as shown in the CoTD sourcebook and in Powers & Pantheons. |

| I've never considered him more than a foot note, myself. |

| As far as we know at this time, his impact has been relatively minimal (unless the activities of the Knights of the Shield are more involved/complex than we know). However, he is extremely secretive and may be involved in pretty much anything a DM wants...but that's not canon/official. He's an interesting entity that deserves more detailed lore. |

| Very small. As others mentioned, his main impact was with the Knights of the Shield and the fall of Peleveria. He was more of the type to leak information to another organization to get them to do his dirty work for him. |

He seems TOO evil to have a wide following. Other evil deities have many potential non evil followers/worshipers. Even most evil aligned people would see him as evil... a follower of Talos might think of Talos as a force of nature and not consider himself/his god as bad. But a god of corruption, betrayal, etc.? I have trouble imagining his faith spreading very far. No part of his portfolio necessitates worship from lay worshipers like Talona, Auril or Umberlee.
His followers make good villains in a game, though. In my mind I ciew 4e Asmodeus as Gargauth because I don't like Asmodeus being made into a deity. I can't imagine many other than tieflings worshiping him in large numbers.
Gargauth is described as an entity only the foolish and insane would worship. He harms and betrays his worshipers. In Bezantur his temple has rituals that involve the death of followers. By his very nature he an enemy of all. |

| He's dangerous enough that Asmodeaus doesn't dare send any devils against him, not even Archdevils, any devil he kills he absorbs thier powers. |

| Methinks that Gargauth and Asmodeaus have a secret arrangement but I have no proof of that. |

I'm more inclined to think that Gargauth thinks he and Asmodeus have an arrangement, when in fact he's just another of Asmodeus' pawns.
Of course, I may be biased. |
