Hello All

For those who would like some real life succession issues to relate to an FR campaign (fits nicely with the 'missing' Cormyr history methinks) have a look here for a masters thesis on England's succession circa 1066 - present day

http://dspace.uta.edu/bitstream/handle/10106/11850/Sadullaeva_uta_2502M_12119.pdf?sequence=1

and a bit more here:

http://www.medievalists.net/2013/10/18/investing-in-england-the-designation-of-heirs-to-the-crown-throughout-english-history/

Loads of good stuff in the thesis to explain the why's and wherefores of succession and what Kings and Queens get up to to protect their own Throne and the Throne for their children or not as the case maybe....

It will do nicely until the day the whole Cormyte Lineage appears *cough* any time soon? *cough*

Cheers

Damian
ps if a mod wants to do the clever clean up of the long interweb links that would be great

So saith Ed. I've never said he was sane, have I?
Gods, all this writing and he's running a constant fantasy version of Coronation Street in his head, too. .

I tried, Damian, really... but my eyes were crossing after the sixth page with how little I care about Britain's succession... Now what we need is a write-up about all the scandals that instigated these rules and resulted from them - AccessHollywood's history of the British Crown :P

However the official royal line of succession looks, thanks to Azoun IV, there will never be a shortage of royal descendants.

Basically the only way to extinguish the Obarskyr would come down to a genocide of all cormyreans, there are just too many able to trace down to Azoun IV by now.

So at least Cormyr can rest safely, since if there's ever a peril to befall the land when no Obarskyr sits on her throne, there should be plenty of Obarskyr-blooded to be found even if the whole court is annihilated somehow

By the same tokken any magical wards relying on Obarskyr blood to protect something of value to the state should be nigh to useless by now

I'd assume there's a fair number of non-Cormyrean Obarskyr-blooded folks running around, too. I seem to recall Azoun getting horizontal with a lady Red Wizard (magic was involved) in one of the novels, and there's no reason to assume no foreigner has ever caught his eye as they passed through. And since he's left Cormyr on occasion, he's definitely had a chance to spread his seed far and wide.

One of the NPCs I've come up with for my on-again/off-again Inn project is not an offspring of Azoun IV herself -- but her son is, and grows to resemble his father more and more each day. He just knows his absent father as a cavalier named Balin, but mama knows his real heritage.

In my FR/Gol/Mys mash-up, I combined Impiltur with Karmeikos, and then threw a monkey-wrench into the succession - the 'lost princess' didn't die at sea... she was rescued my a merman! (actually, a sea-elf, but whatever). Now her Grandson (Prince Namor) has shown up and demanded the crown, and that land has become a hotbed of scheming nobles.

Thus, if I wanted that kind of political intrigue I can just send the players there (and I swapped Impiltur with Turmish, so its just south of Cormyr now). For some strange reason, Cormyr is one of the very FR places I consider 'inviolate' and leave canon alone.

If memory serves Cormyr also has a lost at sea heir or two as well.

The only one I can recall is the same one from Impiltur - she was on her way to marry a Cormyrian Prince (one of the Azoun's, IIRC).

Thus, not only would her offspring cause problems for Impiltur, there would also be 'hard feelings' over in Cormyr, I would think (they might feel it was all done 'on purpose', because she did not want to marry their prince).

Ever is there hope, friend Zireael. The question is whether there is the demand from the fanbase, and the appropriate time and means to make it available.
