Hello again, honored Scribes. It has been many moons since I have visited these learned halls. I seek any and all information on the venerable Turlang. Appearances, stats, descriptions. Has anybody used him in their home games? Thanks in advance.

From the Mintiper's Chapbook...
Turlang the Thoughtful is discussed in The North: The Wilderness, pp. 52, 68, and in FR5 – The Savage Frontier, pp. 10, 49.
My books are in storage. Could anybody please copy any relevant information here
I also note he is mentioned in Ed's scroll. Anybody know where or in what context? |

The reference is to the Woods of Turlang, not Turlang himself.

Long time no see, Fellfire! Let's check the info about Turlang I have in Savage Frontier and The North boxed set:
"Before this onslaught Delzoun crumbled and was driven in on itself. Netheril, without its wizards, was wiped from the face of history. The elves of Eaerlann alone withstood the onslaught and, with the aid of the treants of Turlang and other unnamed allies, were able to stave off the final days of their land for yet a few centuries more." Savage Frontier p. 3-4 The North - The wilderness p. 8
"DRUIDS OF TALL TREES Allies: The Harpers, and the treants of Turlang Wood." SF p. 8 TN-TW p. 67
"TREANTS OF TURLANG WOOD Leader: Turlang the Thoughtful Base of Operations: Woods of Turlang (High Forest) Goal: Protect the High Forest from harm, cultivate and expand forests in the North. Allies: The druids of the Tall Trees Chief Foes: Orcs and trolls.
[The Treants of Turlang Wood are secretive and allow few other than druids and rangers into their midst. They're currently working to reforest the ruins of Hellgate Keep and bring in the outlying forest, reforging the High Forest into its past state. The Harpers are reportedly trying to get the attention of Turlang in an effort to offer their assistance should the need arise. Unfortunately, getting the old treant#146;s attention has proven quite a task, and the Harpers are currently discussing their offer with Quarreleaf, Turlang#146;s second-in-command, in Hellgate Dell.]" SF p. 10 (headings only) TN-TW p.68 (heading plus brackets)
"...intruders into the Woods of Turlang in the northwest may be stopped by the treants who dwell therein." SF p. 16
"Treants The "wood rulers" dwell near the city of Everlund in the part of the forest known as "The Woods of Turlang", after the Treant's aeons-old ruler "Turlang the Thoughtful". Each treant has a stretch of woodland which is carefully maintained in keeping with his or her personality, ranging from immaculately clean tree gardens, to dense, dark and eerie, seemingly haunted forest." SF p. 49
"By mid Eleasias, rumors that Turlang, the powerful treant who resides in the northern High Forest, was actively defending the woodlands near the Citadel of the Mists reached the ears of Tanta Hagara, the hag-ruler of Hellgate Keep. News that Turlang was aiding the Mistmaster did not escape her notice, and the belief that the Citadel of the Mists was holding an extra-planar artifact only added to the hag's interest." TN-TW p. 11
"Within weeks after the final battle with Hellgate Keep, treants blocked passage farther north at the joining of the Heartblood and Delimbiyr rivers. While the treants care little for hunters and adventurers passing through the area, all caravans seeking passage north to Sundabar have been repulsed#151;and this is not a matter that the treants wish to negotiate. In another mishap blamed on Turlang, Turnstone Pass was blocked by a tremendous avalanche. This final calamity sealed the Upvale from any major force of men. Travel into the area formerly occupied by Hellgate Keep is now limited to adventurers and other brave travelers." TN-TW p. 12
"Treants: The High Forest remains the home to the largest collection of treants known in the Realms. They once dwelt in the northern parts of the forest near the city of Everlund, and those woods are still known as the Woods of Turlang, named after the eons-old treant ruler, Turlang the Thoughtful. Unbeknownst to most folk, Turlang and over 100 of his treant subjects have been on the move for the past few years. The treants have spread their branches east and south within the High Forest, likewise animating trees from deep within the forest to spread the tree line of the High Forest. Turlang is currently with a force of 60 treants in the Upvale, spreading small trees, roots, and overgrowth atop the ruins of Hellgate Keep. While the Upvale and the new "Hellgate Dell" have informally become the new "Home of the Wood Rulers", Turlang keeps his wizened eyes trained on the forest as a whole, and thus he also has treants actively preventing any interference along the Delimbiyr and along the southern forest near Loudwater." TN-TW p. 52
"Also, the treants under Turlang and a clan of leprechauns are currently effective at ridding the Far Forests of fiends." TN-TW p. 54
"Turnstone Pass Formerly the quickest way to reach Hellgate Keep and the Upvale from Sundabar, this pass is now totally blocked by a massive avalanche initiated by Turlang's treants and a large number of galeb duhr. Caravan traffic is now encouraged to go south to Everlund, following the River Raurin as it winds its way to Silverymoon. (...) The Upvale This is the area between the Tall Trees and the Far Forests that has now been taken over by Turlang and his treants. While it1s going to take many years to reforest this area, Turlang has already begun work at the ruins of Hellgate Keep, known now as Hellgate Dell." TN-TW p. 57
"Turlang's Calling After a sleep of nearly a century, the treants of the High Forest, and especially their leader, the noble Turlang, have embarked on an agenda after being spurred to action against Hellgate Keep. In exchange for Turlang#146;s aid against Hellgate's forces, the Mistmaster agreed to allow Turlang and company to expand the forest over the ruins of the keep and seal them forevermore, a mutually agreeable situation it seemed. What the Mistmaster underestimated was the scope of Turlang's plan; over the course of the next few decades, Turlang and his dryad and treant allies intend to expand the High Forest's tree line to cover the grasslands of the Upvale and encompass the Far Forests, swell the eastern border of the forest up to and across the River Delimbiyr to abut the Graypeak mountains, and continue the expansion until South Wood is restored to being a part of the High Forest. Even with all the treants working at maximum efficiency, this undertaking is going to require at least 20 years. Even so, enough trees have been animated from the center of the High Forest and walked by treants out to Hellgate Keep that the few visitors that might know where the citadel once was could never reach its ruins, surrounded as it is by guardian treants and oak trees with dryads." TN-TW p. 58
"Far Forest Once, this was a fair wood of healthy trees and frolicking forest creatures. It's currently being tended to by Turlang and other forest denizens who are trying to revive the forest after the fall of Hellgate Keep." TN-TW p. 62
"Alustriel has become moderately worried about Turlang's expansions of the High Forest. While there is no problem yet, she and her new ally, Jeryth Phaulkon of Everlund, will have to mediate with him if he expands the forest beyond the Upvale and toward Everlund." The North - Cities & Civilization p. 54 ("Current clack" session)

Hey, Barastir. I seem to recall you had an interest in Elder Treants some time ago. Would Turlang be considered one? Thanks for the rundown. Not quite what I'm looking for though. I thought I remember reading somewhere he was a Druid 9. |

Although he could be an elder treant, I have no references for his statistics, at least not in these books. I'll check "Hellgate Keep". All of my references, are for 2e, though.
EDIT: No stats there, too. They only called him Turlang, the Great Treant, and affirmed that he was the one who killed Tanta Hagara (!!!). |

I found this in Mintiper's Chapbook as well. I will include it in case any scribe seeks similar information in the future.
Stave of Turlang (Minor Artifact): The stave of Turlang is a magical rod fashioned in the form of an oaken staff filigreed with gold-flecked amber. Carved from the broken branch of the great treant, the stave of Turlang transforms into a treant (as the spell changestaff) if the end of the stave is planted in the ground and the word "Turlang" is spoken. Unlike the spell, however, the stave transforms into a true treant, capable of conversing with other treants and controlling trees.

I believe turlang's stats are detailed in the silver marches sourcebook. He's listed there as an advanced treant, druid 9. |

Does this imply that Turlang resembles a mighty old oak? This may be a question for Ed. |

Ed has spoken on the wood type of treants, before:
quote: Heh. As the year turns, Ed's on the case! Thank you, Sage. Here's the first lore reply of 2013: xaeyruudh recently asked several treant questions, and Ed has just responded to the first one ("And another query: are there particular species of trees in the Realms that are most/least likely to be represented among treants?"), thus:
Treants appear as a modest variety of trees, but the majority of them looking like old, large, going gray (from brown) many-branched oaks. Many young Heartlands treants look like duskwoods, and many "adolescent" (as in, at their most rbellious, reckless, energetic stage) choose to look like bluewoods. I say "choose to" because a treant that roots itself for at least an entire year in a stand that contains a particular sort of tree can then, over a tenday or so, alter itself to appear as (and BE, in terms of physical properties) that sort of tree. Certain elder treants can change at will, and a little faster (within half a tenday).
So saith Ed. Who will get to the rest of your questions, xaeyruudh, when he can, later on in this new year. love, THO

Thanks, Wooly. That led me to some interesting Q&A's. |

Hi again, all, after too long a silence (off on work-related Net silence traveling). Great questions piling up, and relayed to Ed. Fellfire, I can make a start on answering you, by referencing Ed's notes and the few, fleeting encounters we've had with Turlang in play: Turlang has appeared as various sorts of tree (always deciduous, and usually a shadowtop, though apparently he formerly favored "being" a blueleaf; he can shapechange fairly rapidly, apparently). He is always tall and "sturdy" of build. His speech is grave but he has a wry sense of humor, he's a very good listener and VERY patient and self-controlled (it's hard to tell if he ever gets furious, because he doesn't betray it by looks, voice, or choice of words), and he likes to study particular humans so he understands what they want, fear, and are motivated by (those who might have some impact on the High Forest, that is; he doesn't ask about, or go seek out, humans far away who will probably never come near his beloved woodlands or affect them). Turlang often "hides" for long periods by going immobile in the thick forest as "just one more tree," and can apparently commune with many trees over great distances during such periods, to gather their observations and opinions over intrusions into the forest, observed magic, etc. Turlang is in no sense a coward, but is very pragmatic; if he can see no gain (or more loss than overall eventual gain, if he reveals himself) in thwarting someone setting a fire, he won't do so - - but he sledom forgives and NEVER forgets and will strike when a foe is sleeping, wounded, distracted by other matters, or otherwise vulnerable. He never gloats, he just gets even, leaving no "out" for an enemy and "making VERY sure." He has long-term projects of rebuilding and extending woodlands, by outstripping woodcutters and the effects of fires, not by trying to fight the causes of tree loss directly. Most elves and druids regard him as a firm, reliable friend and ally, because you know exactly where you stand with Turlang.
There. Ed's notes that he's shared with me run out at that point, so going on would be my speculation and creation, not his...so I'll stop now. love to all, THO
