I'm laying in bed, and thoughts of a Youtube D&D game keep running through my head. I've seen examples of it here and there, and honestly i've always been disapointed in what i've seen.

I think I/we can do better.

Here is my opinion on the subject...

D&D is a niche audience.

It's my belief that audience prefers reviews/information rather than watching a game being played.

In my many discussions with my group on this matter, we've all come to the understanding that if we actually go about achieving the goal of starting a channel with the topic being D&D that we should do it mainly for our love of the game, and present it as nothing more, be that goal being review/news related content or simply video taping our sessions for those who might be interested in watching.

With all that being said, the last thing on my mind is this...what is the legal standpoint on making such a channel in regards to using a D&D setting such as Forgotten Realms (which is our initial choice) or any other for that matter. The last thing I would want to be guilty of is copyright infringement. And my thought on this is, would it be easier to simply run a home cooked setting, rather than involve a commercial setting? What I've seen from these other channels is that they seem to pay no real mind to using commercial settings, however I'm ignorant as far as their measures to protect themselves on this matter. So to that end I have contacted others who run such channels in hopes they can lend their advice. But I'm making this post in candlekeep because it's my belief that this forum hosts the best minds on this subject that internet has to offer. As well, the community here has been nothing but helpful, pleasant and informative since the day I signed up!

So those are my concerns, I make this post because I really need this thought squashed or extrapolated pending it's merit.

If at all you have some good information or just your own personal thoughts, please share them here.

PS - I just want to take this time to say that I am continually impressed with Candlekeep and its users. I feel like every time I make a post, no matter the subject, I receive nothing but help, guidance and support. This is truly one of the full places on the internet where I feel at home. SO I just want to thank the community and anyone who has taken the time to reply to any one of my posts.
So Thank you Sirs and Ladys! It is most appreciated!

Now then...DISCUSS! lol

There should be no problem with your idea. In fact you would be doing WOTC a favour by promoting there products. As long as it is non profit and you recognise the copyrights involved you will be fine.

I AM NOT A COPYRIGHT LAWYER AND THIS IS NOT SPECIFIC LEGAL ADVICE - SO DON'T RELY ON IT IN A LEGAL SENSE. I'm just giving you my advice as a fan.

I'd take a look at existing Realms youtube offerings (meager as they may be), email the creators of such to ask them what they did, take a peek at podcasts, email their creators to ask the same, and then shoot the folks at WotC public relations an email if you had any final concerns. Generally, it's best to be upfront about these things and to note frequently (and obviously) that the company in question owns the rights anything and everything you are discussing (except perhaps specific characters of your own creation).

Also, as Arcanus suggests - do not attempt to make any profit of any sort (even a modest one) from the effort!

Thanks for the advice! I've done most of this already, but have yet to get any feed back. Still, a work in progress I think. But hopefully I'll get some much needed advice from other Youtubers.
