I hadn't heard this anywhere yet. For me it's the coolest FR news I have heard of coming out of GenCOn 2013 Supposedly coming soon to the iPad....since I havent had a chance to buy the actual board game, I can't wait til it is available!

| I was at the Sundering party that WotC held on Thursday night at GenCon, where they had a display set up for it. Unfortunately they didn't have anything set up for people to play it (I'm guessing it isn't far enough along in development to be playable, yet) but it does indeed look very interesting. I love the board game. |

Good on them for doing that, but I'm disappointed they didn't announce an Android version. I've got the Nexus 7, and after comparing Android to iOS (I also have an iPhone), I can't say that I'd buy an iPad even if I could afford one.
Hopefully they'll do this for Android, as well. Even if they make it playable on the iPhone, it won't do me any good -- I'm done with the iOS, and my next phone will be an Android. And that's going to be happening quite soon. |

I am SO JAZZED about this. I love love love Lords of Waterdeep. One of the best board games, ever. I picked up the expansion at GenCon and have only had the chance to play it once, but I think it's looking good as well.
I hope it translates well to the internet. Not all games do. |

Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

I too am pretty excited to see this announcement. My gaming friends and I play LoWD whenever we get the chance (basically whenever we get together and can't play D&D). The addition of online play will give us many more opportunities to enjoy the game.
As an aside, I was lucky enough to meet the developer of the game, Rodney Thompson, at GenCon this year and I have to say, he was a really nice fellow. So, not only is LoWD a great game, but it has a great team of creators. Kudos to the folks at WotC on this one. |

I have only had the chance to play once, so we decided to play with both expansion boards. I'm sure it plays differently if one plays with just one or the other expansion.
Essentially, the Scoundrels of Skullport contains two expansion game boards, one for Undermountain and one for Skullport. You can decide to play with just one, or with both. If you play with both, you play the "long version" of the game.
The "long version" differs from the regular play length because you have more agents and there are more quest cards, intrigue cards, and buildings available. You have to take out a number of the base game pieces so that there aren't too many. That is determined randomly. The "long version" is also what you play if you play with 6 players (as the expansion also adds a new faction, The Grey Hands). If you play with only one board, or less than 6 players, you have the number of agents as described in the main game.
The Undermountain expansion doesn't add any new elements to the game except great quests, buildings, intrigue cards, and new Lords. To me this expansion is for people who want to play with more options but aren't looking to change the mechanics much. So my impression of this is the same as my impression of the overall game - awesome.
The Skullport expansion adds the new game mechanic of Corruption. It includes little wooden skulls for you to keep track of how much corruption has been acquired in the game and a game board with -1 through -9 marked in little bubbles. As you acquire corruption (via quests, game locations, or intrigue cards), you take the skulls from this board. At the end of the game, the last bubble with no skulls tells you how many negative victory points you get for each skull left in your tavern. For example if I have 4 corruption skulls and the last bubble is -5, I have -20 victory points. The upside of corruption is that the quests that require that you take it often have a massive number of victory points or the properties are quick and dirty ways to get lots of agents. The idea is that corrupt Lords often acquire influence and wealth more quickly than those toeing the line, but their reputation suffers, so they have to strike a balance or risk failure.
Other than that new mechanic, the Skullport expansion works the same as the core game in terms of how to play. I think that it plays VERY differently, however, in terms of strategy.
In the main game while there are Attack Intrigue cards, few of them take overmuch from other players. The Skullport expansion adds much more PvP elements to the game. There are more aggressive Attack cards - you can take someone's property, for example, with one of them. You often gain corruption for these aggressive acts, but you can stab your fellow players in the back. I liked this but one of the people I played with didn't like it at all. She just didn't like people (*cough* me *cough*) taking her things, which was something she hadn't had to worry about before.
If you've decided you want to be somewhat corrupt, you also have to play a balancing act between how much corruption you take to get the quick and dirty rewards against the rising cost as more corruption is taken from the corruption track. It feels very different from the basic LoW strategy of "I need victory points." This is, by the way, a way to negatively affect your opponents. For example, at the end of the game, I had 8 corruption and one of the players had zero. He took a quest that required he take a corruption because it would bump the tracker to the next level, from -4 to -5. This gave him -5 victory points, but it gave me an additional -8 because I went from a total of -32 to a total of -40. In Lords of Waterdeep, -3 at the end of the game can actually mean the difference between winning and losing.
The worst part of the expansion, the only part I can say I didn't like, is separating the expansion cards at the end of the game. Each Skullport and Undermountain is conveniently marked to indicate what they are (with different markings for the two expansion sets), but that still means you have to sort through all of the cards to break down the game. Not the end of the world, but not fun either. |

Pretty much every big and popular board game either already has an iOS version or has one in development. My iPad is pretty much used for books and playing board games.
And I want to put my support for iOS. My first smart phone was an android and I hated it. The app development isn't as tightly regulated as it is on iOS and it shows. Sure, iOS devices are more pricey, but at least you get a solid working device for that money....IMO. |

Not saying don't make the apple version. Just saying, they should realize the numbers here, and if they're going to spend the money to develop it, they should port it to other markets that are much larger and more likely to net them profit. Personally, for me, I'd prefer the PC version over android or apple, because I barely use my tablet except to read.... and I do old fashioned books more than the tablet.... and I use my phone to call people. |

Agreed. And I'm going at this the other way -- I'm an iOS user who is about to bail in favor of Android, due in no small part to the fact that Android doesn't use proprietary cables or the utter horror that is the user-hostile iTunes.
I am a potential customer, as a tablet owner. But if they only support one tablet OS, then they are losing customers. You don't reach customers by ignoring them. |

I'd like to be able to choose from different versions, even given my current focus on the fact that SagePad uses iOS. I don't see myself staying with Apple forever. My OS needs and attitudes tend to shift according to personal whims -- and what insights I can glean from the development of tablet software. |

My Kindle is my computer when I'm away from my laptop and all of my D&D books that I have the .pdf files of are on it...and now that my laptop is working properly, again since it went wonky on me a month or two ago, maybe I might suggest that they also include a PC version... |

You know, I've never looked into a kind... its not an Ipad... so is it an android OS already (whatever candy name they use... I've heard something like ice cream sandwich and some others)? I ask because I can't see amazon developing their own thing when all they're attempting to really create is an e-reader. I definitely could be wrong... I would just be surprised if it weren't an android already. |

From a quick bit of research, the Kindle has its own OS, but the Kindle Fire uses a custom version of Ice Cream Sandwich, which is Android 4.0. The current Android is Jelly Bean, 4.3. |

I believe you're right, Wooly. My Kindle is a Kindle Fire HD and runs very similar to my android phone. Plus I've noticed a lot of overlaps with the apps that my Kindle can download--most of them are also available for my android phone, especially my favorite app which gives me all the OGL rules for Pathfinder. |

I don't have an issue with iOS, myself, and I say that as someone who has had two iPhones, and who still has an iPod. My issues with the iPhone revolve around the proprietary connectors, and having to do everything thru that user-hostile bit of rothé droppings known as iTunes. If it wasn't for iTunes, I'd stick with the iPhone. |

Operating system preferences aside, as of this post, Lords of Waterdeep for iOS is sitting at #2 on the Top Paid Apps in the Apple Appstore.
This is a good sign for LoW related apps (and FR related properties) and should provide impetus to get an Android app eventually to cover the other sizable portion of the market. |

in as much as I'd like to see the android version, I'd love a version for PC first. Hell, I'd probably buy both versions. I mean, its the cost of a meal at McDonald's. |
