Above is the link to the few words that turbine has placed about their D&D styled game slated for release in 2005.
Usually, I'd have passed out from excitement about something like this, but the company making it kept me soundly concious.
I have played both Asheron's Call games, and while enjoyed more than a few aspects of each game, I have been led to believe that Turbine developers would work better drunk.
While the tabletop game is well thought out and good for face to face playing, I have seen many computer games that are just to strict to have much, if any role playing involved, other than "Hail!", or "Well met!" There is a certain element to RPGs that can't be translated into any programming languages. For Intance, in RL D&D, I can choose for my character to try and scale a castle wall. I can't always be successful, but I can make the attempt. While in a computer game, I am kept in town by a 10 foot high wallmade out of ladders (OK, but you get my point, right?)
Hopefully, I'm wrong about this one. I honestly hope I am, because I would not like people of future generations to hear of Dungeons and Dragons, and think 'wasn't that the crappy MMORPG?'
(I am sorry to any Turbine developers out there, but in both Asheron's Call games, my hard worked for characters disappeared into the ether, (more than once) and nothing could be done about it, because the online customer support people either didn't have the power to restore characters, or they didn't answer my contact attempts.)
If anyone else has anything else to say on this subject, for good or ill, I would like to hear it.

I've yet to play or hear of a MMORPG where actual role-playing is stuck to and remotely possible at all.
MMORPG == glorified chatrooms with graphics. MMOROG != simulation, never mind a good one, of pen&paper gaming. I'd like to be proven wrong, but MMORPGs are all the same. You've seen one, you've seen them all. They all cater to "more phat lewtz plz!" and "omg can u powerlvl me??!!!?" mindsets. |

Actually, the last time I actually played Asheron's call 2, it was just the pretty graphics...chat servers were maintained by Microsoft, who, apparently could not have cared less about keeping them operational. |

I am just going to warn you, I made a thread about this a while ago, so I am not responsible if Alaundo comes up and bonks you with his staff. Anyways, I think Dungeons & Dragons Online is almost as much a mistake as Middle Earth Online, also by Turbine. You cannot hope to capture the essnce of Dungeons & Dragons with an online game where you cannot have a DM (this is of course because a company cannot trust people with that kind of power). It just cannot work. Not to mention they will probably employ so poorly designed setting of their own creation. |

I agree with you, Edain. The possible cons seem to overrule the pros when it comes to D&D online. Plus, I still don't see the point of no online DM. |
The Chosen of Vhaeraun "Nature is governed by certain immutable rules. By virtue of claw and fang, the lion will always triumph over the goat.Given time, the pounding of the sea will wear away the stone. And when dark elves mingle with the lighter races, the offspring invariably take after the dark parent. It is all much the same. That which is greater shall prevail. Our numbers increase steadily, both through birth and conquest. The dark elves are the dominant race, so ordained by the gods." Ka'Narlist of the Ilythiiri. |

Not only that, but in any computer gaming systems, there is only so much you can do. I know in the other MMORPG I've played that after the new-fangled-goodness wore off, it actually became a chore to get on and REDO all the content so I could level up a bit.
I'm really hoping I can get into the beta for this D&D:O so I can decide whether or not I want to spend the $50 on this game. In my beta experience, none of the things that I or anyone I knew mentioned were fixed until 6 months after release cough**StarWarsOnline*cough*
Nevermind the fact that they may be giving the first month free, (It is the trend for these games) but if I don't like the game, then I don't want to be out of money that I could use for something I'd enjoy (Like some actual sourcebooks, or maybe some FR novels) |

The best bet to capture the D&D experience in a computer program is too do something similar to Neverwinter Nights, only hte technology is still not progressed far enough to capture the experience completely, maybe in a few years or so it will get better. |

I think I'll pass. I've heard nothing but bad things about such games, unless you find a bunch of people who actually take the fun of it seriously (instead of being serious munchkins who can't be bothered to learn proper sentence structure). |

I'm just ranting about people who should know how to write properly not knowing how (or acting like they don't). I don't count you in that one, Cyric, since I can't speak a word of your native language. |

I'm not a native speaker of English, but even I get annoyed by the English-raping present in MMORPGs and, hell, on the 'Net in general.
I type at about 72 words per minute, and actually typed out "Congratulations!" for guildmates who "ding!" (level up. EverQuest lingo, sorry) in guildchat within seconds. And I got asked, "Holy cow, do you macro and hotkey that or what?" |

Ok, dont be too upset about turbine developing D&D online.
Turbine is a very dedicated, well established game company. Their current work with Middle Earth Online is remarkable. They are following the books very very closly (they actually hired a Tolkien expert).
I think they will do a great job with D&D online as long as they keep an open mind.
As for MMORPG's, they are my favorite type of gaming, and you can find good roleplayers on there as well. But like any game people will try to ruin it. NWN has some excellent roleplaying servers, but eventually some moron (excuse my vulgarity) will come and ruin everones Roleplaying.
Not every FR book reader is a gaming fan, and not every gaming fan is a FR book reader.. so it depends on the person. Hopefully others do not get discouraged based on ones opinion
So in short, do not worry... get ready... and tell your GF or BF you are going on a long long vacation... I think many D&D fans will get hooked on it. |

Personally, I don't know what to say about this. Also, what does mmorpg's stand for? I know it's some type of online rpg, but not muliplayer mass??? I don't know. But for my saying. Im a big DnD fan, but even moreeeee so a Faerun fan. I love the whole concept of the ultimate fantasy world that has no restrictions yet rules of law of it's own. The way everything works toghether blows my mind. Also, every novel about it that I've read was great. IWD tril, dark elf tril, and cleric quintet. ((Cadderly went Ub3r)-Just as drizzt) ANyways. I found the sourcebook for Forgotten realms and got all excited and bought It. Im almost done iwth it. But as Cyric stated, I think it would also be fun to walk down the street of baldurs gate. ALthough anyone could make BG with the nwn toolset, I wanna have the experience of a first person or at least action type game such as THE JEDI Academy game where you control all the moves of the person. And like you could still cast spells and stuff, but you would actually need reagents so as not to make mages godly uber. I doooo love NWN though, But I wanna try it as first person and actually do the figthing rather than just watching my person swing the sword. Does anyone understand?? |

I agree with a lot of the commentary about MMORPGs not having much actual role-playing too them, specfically since it is not even a requirement of the game to stay in character...
but rememeber one thing. Not all of us can find groups to play with, and there are some of us who cant even get realms novels through any means other than the illegal, so there is little left for us but the MUDs and the MMORPGs and that's why i love them. At least I can feel like im part of the world, a world, any world. |

Now your just starting to sound lostin despair. You don't want to travel down that road, my friend .
And MMORPGs can be cool if you manage to get your grip on a few players that are willign to actaully roleplay it :P Only managed to do that a couple of times, though... |

hehehe, when it comes to DnD, I have been lost in despair for a logn time...that does not, however, mean that I have given up all hope.
In my schemes for world domination for example, after disposing of all world leaders, by....well we wont go into that, I will be conquering Australia, upon which time I will be invading the Sage's humble home with wine and snacks so that he cna teach me how to play.
Of course, world conquest has kind of taken a back seat to simply making a living, but let's just say its in development |

There is also another game in development which is also set in Eberron. Still, we cant grumble, theres been quite a large amount of FR games released over the years. |

i think that the idea of having a game or movie based on d&d isn't going to work because the reason is its destroying all imagination and you have to choose one persons imagination. like a street can be imagined 20 different ways |
on second thought lets not go to candlekeep it is a silly place |

Thats a very good point, brjr2001. Ive always thought the same actually. However, as FR is so well described, certain locales are usually imagined in a very similar way by a majority of people (including game designers\graphic artists), so the visual depiction is usually reasonably close. Generally, most people get the idea of what a mediaevil-style street looks like too - just some imagine more detail than others. |
