Hello all i was thinking aobut making a portion of my campaign in the Underdark and wanted to know what some good source materials were does anyone know if there was ever a random encounter table or anything for the underdark in 2nd ed. And what would be some good non monster random encounters (i.e.) a shipwreck in a large underground lake system the size of the great lakes) things of that nature thanks in advance for any info and help

I don't think encounter tables were ever published for the Underdark, but it's an interesting idea. Part of the problem is that a lot of the Underdark monsters all have rare/very rare ratings, which skews the table. Also, you'd need to have separate encounter tables by depth, at the very least.
As for your non-monster encounter ideas, here are a couple of ideas off the top of my head:
* Merchant caravan (drow, duergar, svirfneblin) * Mining expedition and/or encampment (duegar, svirfneblin, dwarf) * Pocket of explosive, non-breathable gas * Watering hole (drinkable, poisonous) * Gate to Demiplane of Shadow (lowerdark only) * Remains (adventurers, miners, merchants, war party; skeletal to just killed) * Cliff (have to scale up/down to continue) * Field of mushrooms (edible, toxic, hallucinogenic) * River * Magma flow (for extra nastiness, have it melting its way through the ceiling) * Abandoned tower (once residence of exiled drow wizard; amount of treasure/traps open to DM)
Anyway, those are a couple of ideas. I'm sure others will come up with others, and I might as well. |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

I love Avernum. I haven't played any of the more recent games, but I started out with the original Exile, and played it up through Exile 3. I need to track them down again. I sure hope he still offers guide books; the Exile games were practically impossible without them (enormously fun, but incredibly hard). |

Random encounter tables for 2E Underdark can be found in the Menzoberranzan Boxed Set as part of the adventure therein. However, there is a much better 3E tables (which you can just use 2E monster stats for) in the 3E Underdark supplement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underdark_(supplement)). |

I just picked up the 2e Monstrous Compendium Annual Volume 2 at a used book sale, and as I was flipping through I saw that there was a whole bunch of updated encounter tables in the back. One of them, on page 124, is for underground. So I stand corrected, 2e did publish an underdark encounter table. |

Found another one. In Dragon #152 they have an entire page of random encounter tables for the underground. There's one large one, then several breakout tables (ie: jellies, undead, water-filled, intelligent creatures). They even have separate tables for if you're close to a drow or svirfneblin city.
It's sort of edition 1.5, as Dragon was in the process of moving from 1e to 2e, but I think most if not all the critters were statted up as part of all three editions. |

I recall a drow-themed site with homebrew Underdark encounters table, too. Descent into Darkness maybe? |

A stampeding herd of Rothé to get out of the way of. A lost wandering mind slave of an illithid. An underwater tunnel that the PCs must swim through to get to their destination. A tunnel with falling stalactites to avoid. |
