I recently joined a local gaming group, having DM'd pretty much just for my friends for years.
I've played 2 games and am now DMing a 3rd, all set in the Realms, while I still occasionally DM a Pathfinder game set in Golarion for my friends.
My first game with this group involved us all being shadovar agents operating in Waterdeep prior to the return of Shade. Having DM'd evil campaigns in the past, I know how quickly your average party descends into infighting, but I hoped that our joint faith in Shar and the fact that we were directly answerable to Melegaunt Tanthul would keep everyone in line. My hopes were quickly dashed during the first evening of play, when several party members turned on the party leader in the middle of a heavily-populated goblin cave, leaving him stranded, injured, tied up and apparently paralyzed, surrounded by burning timbers and with a small goblin horde hot on our heels. When escaped the cave, the instigator of the mutiny fled, vanishing with barely a trace. I explained that if we didn't at the very least try to recover the communication stone that our leader carried so that we could report back, then we might suffer the punishment of a 20th level wizard. That got our party back into a semblence of cohesion and we managed to both rescue our former leader alive and set up a base of operations in Undermountain.
Our next adventure was a 3e FR conversion of the classic module - Night Below. This one went much better though we suffered some teething problems with three players right at the start. A guy with a reputation for disrupting campaigns brought two of his cronies with him for the first couple evenings of play. He was playing a paladin though, so we let him in to fill out our numbers. They weren't too bad at first, silly names but not very disruptive. Then they heard about a dog kennel in the first town. They became convinced that what they could really use was a couple of attack dogs...however, they lacked the funds. Instead, the paladin led his cronies into the kennels (not letting the rest of us get a word in edgewise) and, despite warnings from a child who told them that they'd be ripped to shreds, attempted to steal some mastiffs. The next evening we were asked by the local sherriff if we knew anything about three fools that got themselves eaten by the vicious attack dogs at the kennels. We all passed our bluff checks.
The game I'm running at the moment is the Vampires of Waterdeep trilogy from Dungeon 126-128. My ex-girlfriend and I spent hours making a party of 13th level PCs for universally inexperienced players. One player (the same one who played the paladin but I'd only just met him at this point) decided to make a nuisance of himself by trying to buy drugs from an NPC dealer, ostensibly to find out information about the antagonist mentioned in my plot hook, but in reality just wanting to get high. He forked over the 500gp that he was asked to provide as a downpayment but repeatedly got upset when he saw no evidence that he'd be able to get high anytime soon. In the end, he bared his neck to a werewolf and snapped the neck of an NPC when she gave him lip.
We've since...'encouraged' that player and his friends that they should look elsewhere for their roleplaying kicks and we've been getting on swimmingly ever since. Most of our players are still inexperienced but they're enthusiastic and learning relatively quickly.

| Out of curiosity, where did you set "Night Below" in the Realms? I remember I ran that adventure/campaign for my friends many moons ago (right after the set was published) but this was in a generic setting I believe (actually I don't think the world existed outside of the boundaries of what was presented in that box - I bought it at the same time as the campaign setting box, so I hadn't yet discovered the wonders of the Realms). |
