I was thinking, the characters in my slow-moving campaign have lived through the Time of Troubles, one of them in Athkatla and the other, uh, somewhere in the Savage Frontier, and I began wondering what recollections they have of the Time of Troubles, and other parts and bits of lore that they most likely would have heard about - how do you deal with this when setting up your campaigns? Let's say one of your players decides on playing an Elf at threehundredandsixtynine-and-a-half years of age...how do you set up a background that incorporates Realmslore efficiently? Throw a copy of "A Grand History..." at the player in question? Dig through umpteen sourcebooks and ferret out all the details?
My campaign takes place in the month of Eleint in 1366, only eight years after the Troubles.

You don't have to incorporate the major events of the Realms into a character's history unless it affected them. Even something like the ToT would likely only have minimal impact on a small village, for example. Maybe just a month or two of extreme storms, for example, or one day when all the local sheep started singing Beach Boys tunes, but acted normal the next day...

A spell caster clearly would recall the Time of Troubles, however there is no reason that they should know more then there was troubles.
What they certainly might have heard or experienced is the lack of spell effects, healing, combat spells and so on.
Oh hey of course might have heard guesses/rumors, however unless if they played though the Time of Troubles that is all it is.
If you are talking back story it does become harder, however a back story should try to cover major events of what they encountered. |
"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards." "Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding. "After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."
