Up until November of 2011, I never once read a book from the Realms. I had read like Tolkein, Robert Jordan and a few others, but never was seriously interested in the fantasy genre. I remember though looking for a book to read in Barnes and Nobles one day and saw that Salavtore had a lot of books on the shelf. Picked up Homeland and I was hooked.
Since that day, a little over a year ago, I have read all the Drizzt novels, Moonshae trilogy, First Demonwar trilogy, Avatar trilogy, War of the Spider Queen books and a few other realms books. I have read well over 40+ books over that time... 
I am pretty sure it is safe to say that I am hooked  I just bought almost all of the Harpers series and The Elminster Ascending trilogy. I thought I had found my favorite author in the Realms, Salavtore, but other authors are starting to look better right now, like Kemp, Denning and de Bie.
The best thing is that I have also hooked my wife into reading the Realms books also. She tends to read them while taking a bath though....
Looking forward to many more years with the Realms!!!

*just to clarify: Salvatore's Demonwars books aren't Forgotten Realms books.  |

I did a rough count last week to get a hold on how many I still needed to complete my collection. If my results were accurate, there are around 270 novels available (including the short story collections).
Even at book a week, that's over five years of reading material. Your wife and yourself will be set for quite a while!

| She's a different writing style than Salavatore, but I highly recommend trying out Elaine Cunningham's first book in the harper series "Elfshadow". If you like it, check out some of her other stuff. Even if you don't like it, there's a good chance your wife will. |

Also, if you've grown fond of Drow culture and the Underdark through R.A. Salvatore's work, Elaine wrote an amazing trilogy called Starlight and Shadows, well worth checking out. |

Actually about Elaine's books, my wife read Elfshadow and Elfsong recently and she said that she did not like them as well as the Moonshae trilogy... But she also does not like anything relating to drow either, except for Drizzt (I really enjoy the creative destruction of the drow nature ). I am a little hesitant on reading them right now. I hear great things about Elaine's work though...
My wife is starting to read ahead of me with some books and she wrecks havoc on any book she reads  Seems like she is dipping them in water as she reads them or I have caught her tossing them on the ground before we go to sleep. Kinda forcing me to stay ahead of her. |

Welcome to the realms.
Drizzt was my introduction to the realms as well but there are many other great characters and authors in this setting.
Perhaps you might try the Twilight war trilogy after you are a bit more familiar with the realms. |

I hope you will enjoy the Elminster series, especially starting from MoaM. If you find yourself wanting a little more depth on the setting of Athalantar (as I did), Ed did a good piece on it in Dragon #228.
