Greetings all! Long time reader, first time poster!
I began my love affair with the Realms in 2ed. Actually my first introduction to both the Realms and D&D was the hit Baldur's Gate video game. After that, I was hooked.
Of course that was 1998, and by the time I got the hang of AD&D, 3ed hit the shelves. My friends and I learned the Realms mostly from a 3ed perspective, but since that time I have grown to love the Realms in all its forms, though admittedly I am least familiar with its original 1ed form.
Anyways, since becoming a husband and dad, I've given up RPGs for the most part and sold all my books. However, looking back, I'd love to go and get one, just one book to put on my shelf for Realmslore when I'm feeling all nostalgic.
The 3ed book is pretty extensive, but also somewhat bland. The 2ed box focused more on the popular regions, like the Sword Coast and Heartlands, and provided better information on those regions. I've never really seen a 1ed Realmsbook. Ed's new book seems nice, but it's not really a definitive book on the Realms itself.
The experts on the Realms live here, so tell me, if you could have but ONE book for all time as your book on the Realms, which would it be?

For something edition-neutral that describes the everyday life of your average Faerunian, you'd want Elminster's Guide to the Realms. Mostly fluff, very little if any crunch, and a great way to get a feel for the Realms in general, although it tends to stick to places like Cormyr, Dalelands and Waterdeep. BTW, this is my personal pick.
For 1e/2e, your best bet is to find the Forgotten Realms gray boxed sets. I've found both a 1e gray boxed set and a 2e one at a local game store that has always treated me like I own the place (and I bought both boxed sets right on the spot, because anything 1e/2e sells quickly there), but you may have to go online to either amazon or ebay.
For 3e/3.5e, you can look at (again) local game/hobby stores or (again) go online to aboved mentioned sites to find the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and Player's Guide to Faerun.
For 4e, you can still find them in local game/hobby stores or even chain bookstores like books-a-million. They do have them online, but it's better to peruse them at the store so you can tell if you would like that particular flavor.
If you live near me (in Maine, USA), I can point you to a couple of stores that may have Realms books, if you so wish. |

I'd say you have a choice of two: Grand History of the Realms or Ed's latest, Ed Greenwood presents Elminster's Forgotten Realms. In a perfect world, you would get both! If you can't, then I'd probably go for the latter. Cheers.

| As Buy everything you can lay your hands on isn't an option. I'd echo George and Entreris recommendations. My suggestion would be to make it a quartet and get the 3ed CS, GHotR, FR Adventures and the new Ed Greenwood presents... That bundle ticks every box. |

| Forgotten Realms Adventures. There's a TON of stuff in it, it's a hardcover book, and it feels so nostalgic. Great artwork inside too (and the cover). Really brings me back. |
