Are there any Realms specific items, spells, or other methods to assist a person in executing a race-altering magical disguise that will pass muster under close scrutiny? (I understand that transmutation magics would still be seen under True Seeing!)

My group is using the Pathfinder/D&D 3.5 rules and I noticed 'disguise self' is pretty weak at surviving close scrutiny or if someone suspects you may be something more than what you seem. I considered 'alter self' to aid in making semi-real or real changes (sort of like dopplegängers use) to make my disguise seem more real, but it has a fairly short duration and thus nearly useless for a serious disguise!

My character is a draconic sorceress. Two of the powers acquired through that bloodline are the ability to manifest clawed fingertips and bat-like wings for a healthy duration daily. I used those powers, and a hat of disguise, to make myself look like a succubus in order to pass as a 'bad guy' while my party was on a mission in the Underdark trading post of Mantol Derith. However, there are some fairly serious baddies there and a few of them have been able to tell I am not quite what I seem.

Some of the members of my party are considering popping over to Menzoberranzan, but I don't want to try an evil disguise (like as a drow) in such a daunting place if it can be seen through so easily.

So, to get back to my original question - are there Realms items or spells that use transmutation magic more than illusion to create a disguise that will last for a long period of time?

First thing that spring to mind are fleshgrafts to enhance a disguise. But fleshsculpting is a permanent, painfull affair that tends to lead to ones loss of self. Yuan-Ti are quite possibly the most adept of all of Torils races (except for the epic Sarruhk ofcourse) in transmogrifying magics. They also tend to have a natural affinty for psychometabolism, the psionic school of altering the body, and are known to have used both psionic and magics to experiment on changing other races' and their own forms.

Polymorph like spells are powerfull magics, and not easily come by within ample resources though. The closest magic item that enables full polymorphing abilities is the Skin of Proteus, a Psychoactive Skin found in the Expanded Psionics book.

Generally, polymorphing is more effective against magical scrutiny than illusion, but dangerous. You might also look into mundane disguise methods, like using disguise kits and having the member of the party who is best at lying (or a hired thief) disguise everyone. Also, a major part of selling a disguise is giving your observer plenty of reason to *want* to believe you are who you say you are. Avoid arousing suspicion, and you minimize the chance of someone using divination magic on you.

There are literally thousands of different versions of spells in the Realms, and I have no doubt someone will point you to exactly what you're looking for.

My main point in posting is to suggest that this is a conversation you'll want to have with your DM. Does he/she know you're planning an expedition into the Underdark? Maybe he/she has plans for the characters and would be happy to see you be able to pass--at least for a while--as drow. I'm sure the two of you can come up with a way that gets you what you want while also serving the needs of the story.

Cheers

I was sorting through some old e-mails tonight and realized that I had never passed this gem from Ed on to all of you. Apologies!

From Ed, when I posed this question to him some time ago (it's in 3.5/Pathfinder lingo because that is the system we use):

quote:
First of all, observing the gait of a gender or creature you want to impersonate, what they do with their hands, their stances and how they “carry” themselves (and hold their heads when looking about, on the move), is crucial to fooling someone about your “true” race, without causing them to notice that “there’s something odd about that one.” So some observation and acting ability is vital. So, of course, is correctly learning language and other vocalizations (squawks, burbs, noises of disgust or alarm, and so on).

So to pass as a succubus or drow, you have to master acting like one. Note that both creatures are part of their own racial societal hierarchies, so dealing with other drow or succubi might well be tricky or dangerous or both.

With that said, there are various (little-known, often guarded and kept secret by those who can cast them, so they can charge high fees for single castings) spells that can aid in an other-race imposture, including:

TRANSMUTE SELF
School: transmutation (polymorph); Level: bard 4, sorcerer/wizard 4
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Components: V, S, M (a piece of the creature whose form you desire to assume)
Range: personal
Target: you
Duration: 1 day + 1 day/level

When you cast this spell, you assume the form of any Small or Medium humanoid creature. If the form you assume has any of these abilities, you gain them: darkvision (range normal for the form), low-light vision, scent, and swim (range normal for the form). You also gain average-skills use of all purely physical attributes of the new form, such as winged flight, goring and tail slashes and other attacks the new form possesses.
Small creature: If the form you take is that of a Small humanoid, you gain a +2 size bonus to your Dexterity.
Medium creature: If the form you take is that of a Medium humanoid, you gain a +2 size bonus to your Strength.
This spell cloaks the true alignment of the spell recipient, replacing it with the usual alignment of the form gained (if there is one), and also confers auras, body scents, immunities, resistances (and weaknesses), and senses of the body being counterfeited. Magical abilities and other non-purely-physical properties of the new form are not conferred by this magic.

Note that this spell doesn’t give you the spell-like abilities of a drow (dancing lights, darkness, and faerie fire), but you could gain each with the assistance of a powerful spellcaster successfully a careful sequence of spells on you: an “Imbue with spell ability” spell, then dancing lights (or darkness, or faerie fire), then (if more than one casting is desired) a “permanency” spell.

Using this spell to feign being a succubus would gain you all the “DR” abilities listed in the Pathfinder rules for “Demon/Succubus” but you would retain your own SR (if any), and you would have telepathy 100 feet, but would have to learn all the languages a succubus normally has, and would have to acquire any of the spell-like abilities in the same manner as for the drow abilities. You would gain the energy drain (without the suggestion) and the detect good ability and the heightened Perception. You would also, yes, gain the change shape SQ, too - - but not the profane gift.

There is also a “Master Self” spell that’s identical to Transmute Self except that it’s sixth level for bard and sorcerer/wizard, lasts for 2 days/level, and confers any one spell-like ability of the new form of the caster’s choice.

Both of these spells can be shattered if you are hit with a dispel magic and fail your Will save (only a roll of “1” being a failure), or a greater dispel magic (normal roll plus your modifier). If the greater dispel magic comes within 3 points of affecting you, but fails to end your Transmute Self or Master Self, the form you have magically assumed will visibly “waver” for a round (though you won’t lose control of the new form - - so if you are flying, you won’t plummet through the air for 1 round).

"I am always here, all about you. You are never truly alone. I flow wherever life flows, wherever winds blow and water runs and the sun and moon chase each other, for there is magic in all things."
