EDIT: with WotC's boneheaded decision to revamp their website URL without providing redirects, it's impossible to use many of the links on this scroll.
If you're having trouble clicking through to an article, try this archive link.
Thanks go to our resident hamster, for turning up the Forging the Realms archive link.

Hello All,
Forging the Forgotten Realms: Mirt Strides Out of the Mist is the first of a new weekly series by Ed Greenwood, wherein Ed talks about the Realms, where it came from and how he runs the Realms as a DM.
Already looking forward to next week's article!
This is free content on the main page. No DDI subscription necessary.
(Tip of the hat to Plaguescarred on the WotC forums for posting a link to this article there.)

Oh, Jeremy, you just beat me to it. I saw this while I was finishing up at work, and then thought I'll have to post a notice about it at Candlekeep when I get home.
Ah, well.
I'll keep the updating this scroll as new articles are released. |

Fascinating stuff! I always assumed Elminster was the one that guided Ed through the Realms as they were built up in his mind. This makes all the Mirt action in Crown of Fire more apt in my mind. He seemed somewhat out of place to be used in the novel, given it's setting, but in Ed's first realms series he couldn't leave Mirt out of the action if Mirt was his Realms muse!
Definitely will be reading this every week and happy to see the inclusion! |

quote: So let me tell you about a long-ago play session in my “home” Realms campaign, when . . . Hey! No yawning back there!
This is not going to be a grand heroic saga, but something more on the order of “a day (and night) in the life.” I’m relating it not (I hope!) to bore socks off, but to illustrate the layers upon layers of intrigue that abound in the Realms, and the play possibilities that hidden alliances, spying power groups, and covert activities offer.
We’re probably all familiar with D&D sessions involving a night in a creepy inn where there might or might not be a murderer creeping around. Such clichés exist because they make great stories and D&D game sessions. Yet characters can have so many more options, and players can get so much more deeply interested, if there’s more than that going on. Lots more than that.
So, to the tale . . .

This is fantastic news! Free Realms content? From Wizards? Weekly?! By Weirdbeard himself?!! While I've yet to read the articles, this is the tippity-top on my list
edit:But, wait. Forgive my ignorance. Which era are we talking? Wouldn't Mirt be dead after the timejump? Is this another peek into Ed's personal campaign? |

These are insightful snapshots of Ed's game, as noted in the opening blurb of every article:- " ... and how does the Grand Master of the Realms use his own world when he runs D&D adventures for the players in his campaign? ... "
So I'm guessing they're era-neutral. |

Fell you might want to read the new Elminster books to learn what happened to Mirt... |

Technically Ed runs AD&D
Am really looking forward to reading more of these and even more to getting Ed's upcoming book.

Hehe.
I'm thinking, though, that Wizards is trying to present all this as largely edition-neutral, since a great lot of the historical content included in this book will likely not be specifically tied to either the Spellplague or the events after that cataclysm.
In other words, it's more about Ed's Realms, than it is trying to fit the Realms to a particular rules-set. |

Good read, but nothing most haven't already deduced from Ed saying similar things over the years. This article clearly indicates the superiority of the 'inaccurate 3rd person' style of product presentation. Something we FR fans have been clamoring for (again) since the advent of 3e.
To me, the Volo's Guides were the quintessential marriage of gaming product with 'story-telling' - I cannot think of any other line of products that has manged to achieve that balance so perfectly.

Wow... imagine a future where AI can can accurately duplicate a living DM.
We are going to need some of Ed's genetic material for that one. |

Not only was the article old-school (Volo style) Realmslore, it was about my favorite 'pet region'.

" ... it doesn't matter what the rulebook says about Tethyr or Westgate, because this character has been there, and this is what that person knows (written down so the player doesn't have to remember everything all the time). The "real" Tethyr or Westgate, as this character is well aware, is rather different from what it says in a book that might have been written by someone who's never actually visited those places." -- From the latest 'Forging the Realms' article.
This is the way I've always played my Realms. But to hear Ed's own words on the subject... well, it just brings to my mind how much more vibrantly alive his campaigns must be, when compared to what's been printed in the 20+ years worth of official sourcebooks and additional materials.

"The Surprise Adventure" was a great read. I hope WotC seriously considers some "How To" advice like this for the next Elminster's Forgotten Realms book. |

Tell me about it: A sentient monster is technically a person, and kill-on-sight tactics is technically murder.
Good article. I love the way Ed feeds us tiny tidbits of lore. |

I have to say, finding (and catching up on) the Forging the Realms series has to be my favorite article posting on the Wizards site since about oh...2006.
And, I have heartily used the Friendly Monster trope long before the article, it having made a definite (positive) impact on my Kingmaker campaign. |
