The Silver Marches
A vast frontier fraught with endless peril, haunted by malicious dragons, hordes of orcs, and other ferocious creatures, the relentless cold and unforgiving terrain of the Silver Marches promise undiscovered riches and unspeakable danger to those bold enough to venture there. The inhabitants of this northern land share their territory with dangers that lurk in every forest, alpine valley, and mountain passes. Folk who leave the shelter of the city walls must go armed and go carefully, lest they fall victim to one of the many horrors waiting to claim its next victim.

Olostin’s Hold
The only human settlement of any size in the High Forest, Olostin’s Hold is a fortified keep protecting a small village of about two hundred people, and extending its protection to as many as six hundred more farmers, woodcutters, and homesteaders in the immediate area. The hold’s folk are very careful not to anger the powers of the forest; the woodcutters take only dead or dying trees, sometimes ranging far into the forest to find trees safe to bring down.

Of late the folk of Olostin’s Hold have been much troubled by trolls driven south from the Evermoors. These marauding monsters have made the Yartar – Everlund road much less safe than it used to be, and so less traffic passes near Olostin’s Hold than it did in previous years.

The Game
The Silver Marches Campaign is a Play by e-Mail game (PbeM) set in the region of the same name and will start in the small village of Olostin’s Hold. The game will be focused more on role-play then combat, though the later will still occur and be potentially lethal; this to reflect the harsh nature of the area. The style of the campaign can be classified as: Mature Gaming (MG – rating see Dragon Magazine 300 for more details). I’m not fond of power-gamers, munchkin-gamers, and evil-characters. People who fit these categories are better off joining another game. The game will start at 1st level and for the character submissions I expect a decent background which can function as a further basis for the game. The game will be opened for 4 – 6 characters initially.

The Characters
All races and classes from the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (FRCS) are allowed. Character creation uses the point-buy system on page 20 in the DMG (table copied below). All initial characters will start at 1st level and I would advice those who want to pursue a prestige class to pay attention to the prestige class’s requirements. All characters start out with the class’s maximum starting gold, yet equipment bought in Olostin’s Hold has a cap of 100gp. (No items available over 100gp). Those characters that qualify for a regional package receive the full benefits of that package, though in some cases I might require a background explanation. Before adjusting hit points (hp) for Constitution, all characters start out with a full Hit Dice (a fighter starts with 10 hp, a sorcerer with 4 hp).
• Note: I would prefer at least 1 gnome character in the group.

Recommended Sources
• Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (FRCS);
• Silver Marches (SM);
• Magic of Faerûn (MoF);
• Faiths & Pantheons (F&P);
• Players Handbook (PHB)

Background
I expect a decent background for each character submitted. The background should contain some information about the character’s family and upbringing, as well as some clarification of some of the character’s abilities (skills, feats, powers). Try not to be too fancy with the background, keep it realistic within the normal expectations (any special ‘cases’ can be allowed after DM’s review and approval). A well written background will provide me with possible future adventure hooks either for boon or bane of the character and the party. Also the better the background, the more bonus starting experience (xp) a character receives.

For those who want to have their characters hail from distant (Faerûnian) lands, keep in mind that the character is only 1st level. Any travel of more than 200 miles from Olostin’s Hold requires a very good explanation in the background.

Journals
I strongly recommend the players to keep a journal for their characters. The nature of the PbeM game makes keeping a log relatively easy (cut & paste from the e-mail) and sometimes invaluable. A DM’s version of the story might be published (in parts) either on the Candlekeep forum or the Candlekeep website.

Point-Buy system
All characters receive 32 points to buy the scores for the six abilities.

Ability |Point
Score |Cost
====+===
3 – 8 | 00
09 | 01
10 | 02
11 | 03
12 | 04
13 | 05
14 | 06
15 | 08
16 | 10
17 | 13
18 | 16

For more information, character submissions or questions send an e-mail to: jphazelhoff@yahoo.com or post the question in this thread on the forum.

Sounds like fun! can I join?! Can I join?!

Ditalidas is dancing around Mumadar in happiness. Suddenly the movement stops and the happiness disappears from her face. Instead she looks really sad.

I know... you want to give the newbies a chance... sigh...

poor me...

Shades, currently my Instant Messenger services are not useable from the location where I'm at (called work). But you can always send an e-mail to jphazelhoff@yahoo.com

Darwin, (and anyone else for that matter) the game will be 3rd edition. Sorry to dissapoint those who want to keep playing 2nd edition, but I've made the full transition to 3rd and wasn't planning on going back.

Subscription for characters in the Silver Marches game has stopped. Any new subscribers will be welcome to join as lurkers and will have priority when departing characters require back-filling.

After reviewing the characters the game will start shortly and the journal will be published on the Candlekeep website.

*L* Oh, I don't think that's really true. I know very little, and I'm always asking questions, drummerboy, hence the quote from Mumadar of "You're just as curious as a Kender in Toyland". Ask the DM if you can just start playing, sine we're just getting started. (Also, I'd be happy to have another newbie to learn w/!!!) Would you like me to beg the glorious DM to let you? *puts on a hopeful grin* And if that doesn't work there are other... methods I could use. *evil grin*(j/k) As in the words of a great man/woman "You never know until you try!"

You're nice Kitira.
And don't let me stop you from begging or using ... other ways to influence your DM (don't know your ideas, but he'd surely deserve some of them ).

Then again ... I'm half a newbie too, would like to join as well and became a lurker some time ago in order to join and surely would be if someone else overtook me.

Currently both the Silver Marches game (13 players) and the Twilight Dawn game (12 players) are closed for new characters. Both games are open for lurkers to join. The Silver Marches game was started to offer newcomers to the PbeM genre a chance of sampling and enyoing this type of game and to allow some new players (not TD players a chance to play in another game.)

Lurkers do get preference when a character opening occurs or when this DM gets crazy enough to start a third game. As Frey pointed out, the DM can be bribed, especially with well written backgrounds and characters who could make a good contribution to the game. Though nothing is guaranteed... no promisses made.

I have openend up some more positions in the Silver Marches campaign. Priority will be given to the lurkers on the list to create a character, but there might be opportunities for others to join as well. (can't make promises yet...)

If you're interested, send me a private e-mail and I'll let you know. Look for more on the Silver Marches campaign in the Campaign Journals section of Candlekeep (link below).

Mumadar,

Where can I find information on the Tree Ghost settlement at the Grandfather Tree? I want to read up on the area but can't find the info...

I have the 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting but in the area for the Silver Marches I see no reference to the Tree Ghost peoples or the High Forest for that matter. If it's in there please let me know what page to find the info on. If there are other reference points where I can get a better sense how of characters would have grown up and what their garb would be like and so on, please let me know.

Thanks

I have sent you the information by e-mail in the mean time, but for others who would like to look for it; In the description of Uthgar and the Beast Totem aspects in FRCS, one can find some information on the Uthgardt Tribes. The section on the North also contains limited information on the Uthgardt Barbarians.

I don't know if you have the game Never Winter Night, but in that game is also an adventure-hook that deals with the Uthgardt. It should give an impression...

Eh... ehm.... yeah... maybe. Geez it's been a long time since I played that game... Let me see what I remember and I'll send it to you by e-mail... that is... if you seriously want to know... The wink gives me the impression that your question could be a sarcastic one...

Where can I find out about Adepts especially any information about what the abilities of a Shaman Adept would be?

The 'adept' as character class (for NPC's) is described in the 3rd edition Dungeon Master Guide. These adepts have a specific list of spells which is a mix of arcane and divine spells.

The Shaman Adept you are looking for is more from a role-playing point of view. Treat him as an apprentice who is finding his way into magic without his tutor, and you have something that comes close. The ritualistic casting from Relics & Rituals gives a little more flair.

If anyone else has suggestions, please jump in on this thread.

Don't worry Mumadar I am not changing classes, I just wanted to see what spells and abilities Hakim (Tarim's father) would have access to, so I would know what Tarim would have been exposed to. It might help us figure out what spells Tarim is able to cast (at least in his primary class)It also will help me get a feel for Hakim's abilities and mindset.

If you follow the Silver Marches subscribe link in my signature (below) you can join the Silver Marches list. Currently there are no 'new' player opneings, I have only moments ago opened an existing character to be taken over by a new player. Lurkers on the Silver Marches list get first choice, before allowing 'outsiders'
