This long and many years since I first bought my first Forgotten Realms boxed set...the maps have seen the end of their days I'm afraid.

They are becoming so used that I essentially have several rough 8x10 map sections.

SOOOO...is there anyone out there that has EITHER:

A copy they would be willing to sell me (yes, I'll buy the entire boxed set of course).

OR

Does anyone have a map of the 1e Forgotten Realms that they have created that they wouldn't mind sharing?

There are SOOOOO many awesome maps out there full of canon locations; but I'm honestly simply looking for the simpleness of a 1e Forgotten Realms map...with all the lack of towns and such...and all the space.

The Old Grey Box and AD&D for me!

Thanks for looking that up!

Its only drawback is that apparently the maps are in similar condition to my own...somewhat worn. Has to be in better shape than mine honestly though...I'll keep an eye on it!

You should see mine.

Right now I am using a moldy, half-burnt copy of Five shires.

My GH box and my Mystara (OD&D) box were in another area, put away (unlike the stuff I used constantly, which was vaporized). Its in horrendously bad shape - what the fire didn't take, the fireman destroyed with their ebil hoses of doom.

I had to re-wet the Five Shires source the other day just to get the pages apart - I felt like an archaeologist.

you have new maps????

why is being a wizard like being a drow? both are likely to find a dagger in the back from a rival or one looking to further his own goals, fame and power

I have some maps of the Western Heartlands that, although the boxes they were in has definately seen better days as they're being held together by duct tape (such a wondrous invention, really), the books inside and the maps are nearly brand-spanking-new. And I had bought these second-hand, maybe for no more than USD$10.00 each, from a gaming store which regularly sells older D&D and Realms stuff that others turn in when they don't need/want it anymore. They have my number on speed dial when it comes to Realms stuff, literally!

And today I just bought the 2ed AD&D Monstrous Compendium for about USD$35.00 from my favorite game/hobby store. They've been holding it for me.

As I am led to understand, Ao is reverting the geography of Toril back to the state of the Old Grey Box. So Maztica is back, Returned Abeir is going bye-bye, the Old Empires are being restored, and so on. Mind you, while the geographical situation is reverting, this is not a 'reset' - everything that happened, happened. Whether or not there are people to fill those restored Mulhorand or Luiren cities (and so on) is something we get to wait and discover, to say nothing of what the sociopolitical situation will look like.

So Faerunian elves may well wind up on Abeir when Laerakond is restored to it (elves were not indigenous to Abeir), and many of Abeir's denizens will remain on Toril (that pretty much goes without saying).

With the exception of Warforged (which Diffan rightly pointed out were entirely within the realms (npi) of possibility even before the Sellplague), that allows people like me to freely ignore anything 4th Edition introduced. And by using the 1st Edition maps, can they fall back on (and hopefully update) them.

Can someone provide a link to this statement (that the maps are going back).

A link? No.

It was stated (at Gencon) that 'something' is in the works, and that certain someone's are currently building a new, easily modded map, based upon the 1e/2e realms maps. The idea I get is a set of tools - primarily for designers but hopefully also for gamers - that also us - to customize the new official map 'on the fly'.

Ostensibly, I can see what a benefit this will be to authors (both novel and designer). Having worked closely with one designer on a project I know first-hand how a lot "gets lost in translation". Having mapping tools a novice could use would help greatly with all that (and probably prove more cost-effective in the long run).

And like I said, the comment (I believe it was by James Wyatt) was that this new set of tools will be based on the older maps. However, I get the idea that this will be the 'default' map, and they (and hopefully us) will be able to tweak it to our heart's content, which will allow us to build off of the 1e/2e map any era we like.

So it was more of a series of questions and answers - with some rather vague answers - and that was the general gist I got. YMMV.

I also feel somewhat honored, since I think I may have inspired the "give them the tools, and watch them run with them" concept. I built my own tools, which I selfishly kept to myself (a stupid move, in hindsight), and what I believe they are trying to do is allow everyone to do what I do, easily. I might miss feeling 'special' (along with Handsome Rob, Patrakis, and others), but I feel the overall benefit to the community far outweighs any egotistic concerns I have. I hope to see hundreds of "see my version of FR" sites eventually (because that is what we are supposed to do with it - use the tools they give us to build our own, unique settings).

And besides, 75% of what I do is building new tools (all over again, now) - if they do that for me, so much the better. It gives me more time to do 'the fun stuff'.
