Just been reading the ruins of Zhentil Keep and noticed that beneath Zhentil Keep is a lich (Stallac something or other) that has created a vast labyrinthine domain. One little section of the adventure detailing Stallac's domain notes that unknown to the lich, his zombie servitors have uncovered ancient runes of a language so ancient even sages versed in ancient languages have only a small chance of deciphering it.
I was wondering two things.
1 - Has Stallac been found/destroyed yet, bear in mind the sourcebook was set in 1368 DR, so a lot has happened, including that Bane is now again in charge of Zhentil Keep. If Stallac is not dead does Fzoul know about him, because in the books it is stated that the Zhentarim on the surface do not know about his presence.
2 - Who do the ancient runes belong to, it says the runes detail the story of an ancient civilisation who's ruins litter the lands of Faerun. Given that in 3E we now have details of who those ancient civilisations were i was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what it could be.
My own personal musings are that they could be Batrachi, Ironfang Keep is nearby and although it is recorded in grand history of faerun as being first mentioned around -25000 DR by Dragons as part of Helligheim it never states that it was built at that time or by the Giants. Furthermore Haask the Voice of Hargut takes the keep around -900DR, the question is for what purpose.
It could be that Ironfang Keep was originally built by the Batrachi either during their empire as an outpost or the survivors could have built it to retreat to and enter a form of stasis until the climate was more suitable, or Ironfang Keep itself may have been built by the Giants atop the ruins of another Batrachi complex. Haask may have been in stasis somewhere in the area for a very long time and was released just prior to c-900 DR where he headed to Ironfang Keep to setup a secure base of operations with which to strike out and unearth more batrachi ruins, lore, magic items, and maybe even a few survivors etc.
Therefore Zhentil Keep could have been built on ancient Batrachi ruins, the ruins far underground would have made excellent hiding places and surviving Batrachi in the area could even have contributed to the work of the bae'tith in collecting magic from all the ancient races of Faerun.
Anyways just an idea.
