I have created a character, and have been using her for some time. She has become quite a powerful sorcerer, a necromancer. She has even achieved the prestige class of True Necromancer, but I have still not yet decided on a name. I've thought of just leaving her nameless, but my friends don't like that ideal very much. Their characters have just begun calling her the witch lady. If you have any good names, or ideas please let me know thanks.

Perhaps if you could provide more details on her history, personality and alignment, it may help to forge a unique and interesting name.

Discovering her powers at age 15 she was rejected by her non-magic family, and most of her peers were too afraid of her to get close. The King in that area was aslo afraid of magic and ordered all "magic folk" to be exicuted on sight, unless escorted by his soldiers. He taught the people within his realm that magic was a sign of evil.
Fearing death she ran to the wilderness for protection. She found a cave in a nearby swamp and spent the next several days scavanging for food. One night she had a dream of a femal sorcerer in a red cloak(Wee Jas) visited her and gave her "power over death". Since then she has created small bands of the undead to do her bidding, and even working as a mercinary to a much more powerful and power hungry Lich.
I think thats about it.Oh yeah, her familiar is a snake. She uses a poisoned dagger, and a light crossbow.

Okay, that helps in putting some background behind the character, and also helps in shaping a name that fits.

I am assuming you want both a first and last name, or maybe you would prefer a special exotic title...like Spellslinger, or Death's Hand, or some such?.

Anyway...offhand, I have quickly generated several names that seem to 'fit' with the personality type I think this character represents -

Carmilla
Elena Marcus
Miska Krauhasen
Cordelia D'Carioll
Madame Loransan Gaskell
Rosaria Darkthorne
Lady Anna Rocambole

Oh well, some of those are not very interesting, or exotic, but it's a start. Let me know what type of name you are chasing anyway...it still may help.

Sorry I forgot to tell you, she is a human. I like your thought of an exotic title, spellslinger stood out. If you have any more like this I would love to hear them. I liked the name Darkthrone too. That would be an interresting last name, but I'm still having trouble deciding on a first name. I was thinking that mambe she has a name that her parents gave her, but since they abandoned her and she became a loaner, she gave her self another name. Both names should be very famous by now, but not many people have put the two together, yet.

One name generation technique I've found helpful is to take an adjective or other word that describes the character or being in question, and play around(for lack of a better word)with distortions and alterations of that word, adding and deleting sounds and letters as you see fit, until you end up with something that you like. Generally, the end result resonates of the root word.
As an example, I once started up with Pain & Suffering and ended up with Tain Sofure.

Alternatively Master Dresdinn, you could make use of the 'name-splicing' technique that the Bookwyrm and I were discussing many months ago. It involved taking parts of names you like the sound of, or that maybe have some form of specific cultural or societal significance, and combining them in odd and curious ways until something interesting comes up.

Now granted, this doesn't always provide an interesting selection, but it is an enjoyable exercise nonetheless.

After all the Sage of Perth's actual name, Rastromo Meradoc, found it's own origins in this 'name-splicing' technique...See if you can find the original roots of this 'spliced' name (anybody other than the Bookwyrm that is...).

Anyway, it's just a suggestion for future name generation problems that you may have...

Well since she is a necromancer and has given herself a name I think she ahould have given herself somthing like deathbringer or somthing as an title. So somthing like Amilia Dheathbringer.

I like the self appointed name of deathbringer, it has a certain ring to it I like, and last name Darkthrone. That still leaves the first name to be decided. I think I'll be using the name generation techniques that Arivia and the sage of Perth mentioned. Once again thanks to all for your help.

I rather like the name Viper. Her snake familiar reminded me of another character of that name who happened to like snakes. Except she was a theif/spy, and used unpoisoned stilettos.

I'd tell you where, but the book's on Alaundo's Banned List. (Or rather, it's not on his copy of Realms Quarterly.) I'm sure that at least Sage will recognize her, though.

Indeed I do... ::The Sage refuses to say anything further...in the halls of Candlekeep, you never know whose listening...::

Master Dresdinn, I'm sending you a little 'extra' information. It partly has to do with what the Bookwyrm was just talking about.

Enjoy.

Just a guess, but I'd have to say "Nostradamus" and "Meriadoc", as in "Merry"

Am I close?

You're close in regards to "Meriadoc", but as for the first part of the Sage's name, "Nostradamus" did not even factor into my thinking.

Master Dresdinn, the information I just sent you may have come through a little garbled...just let me know, and I'll re-send it.

Anglisha. Yes I finnally think I have it. It is a rather strange sounding name, but I used the name genorating techniques that Arivia spoke of. The Ang stands for anger, the li stands for longing to come back into civilizatoin, and the sha stands for shear hatred for the ones who did her wrong. Well thats what I came up with so far, but its not quite what I was looking for. If anyone has any more suggestions please don't be afraid to speak up. Oh, Sage I did not recieve that information you said you sent me.

Not bad Master Dresdinn. Creating names is not as easy as some might think... The good names, like Vexez(one of the few original names I've made) always come in moments of inspiration and is always a favorite of mine although it is male... I see it as rare moment of insight and wisdome for me. Although I did follow one rule of Thumb And perhaps this may help you as well If your necromancer be even questionably evil. To Quote Teritus Wands From Realms of Mystery, The Devil and Teritus Wands by Jeff Grubb:
*Ahem*
" Crime lord are not supposed to have reassuring names. *Make note of the next part * Truely evil ones put alot of X's and Z's in them. Sort of like a Verbal 'Beware of dragon' sign or 'no peddlers.'"

So take letters that are not commonly used and put them together. V X Z, some very unused letters now simply link them with a few vowels V E X E Z
Vex'Ez
Thus Vexez was born. Thus X, Z, V and any other unused or out of the way letters and link them as much as you can. Not totally simple but intresting names abound.

That is some very good information Cardinal, and I will be sure to use it in the future.
Most everyone refers to her as Deathbringer, her self appointed name, but her real name is Anglisha Darkthrone. I think the Darkthrone throws in a hint of royalty, or at least nobility, into her family's blood line.

Depends on the nobility. I wouldn't think that in most noble families a necromancer would be exactly popular.

Shadowlord chuckles. You always seem to bring mirth to the staid halls of Candlekeep, Bookwrym. And you do raise some interesting points. "How am I going to match you with a potential suitor when you have undead slaves running around the keep?!?!"
