I am working on a Custom Character Sheet for an online game. Since I could not find one I was happy with, I got all 900 pages of Microsoft Word 2003 for Dummies and came up with THIS so far. Before I go any further I would like to hear some comments and criticisms. I can make this available in a blank template form to any who are so inclined when I am finished. Thanks!

That is one of things I'm looking for some advice on. I think I'm gonna scratch that and try to fit something else there.
Thanks.
edit: moved some stuff around, any suggestions? What is your biggest complaint with with Character Sheets in general? What do you wish was there? |

Your layout seems fine, Fellfire, although I do see two problems: 1) you didn't use the correct game logo 2) you didn't include a "Dentist" entry ... My, what big teeth Cael has!
Quite an impressive effort "for Dummies", I've seen a lot of charsheets which looked worse and not a lot which looked better. Incidentally, you might find the inks in your printer get imbalanced after running off too many characters. |

I think the red lettering makes it a bit hard to read.
Otherwise, great job. |

Dunno why, but I have yet to see any of my PCs actually recorded on a single character sheet. On anything less than about 5 character sheets, most of them detailed inventory. One player uses an actual ring-binder with hundreds of pages as his "character sheet" ... mind ye, he has every spell and skill and feat and other tidbit of any relevance to his character written therein, he need never consult the PHB nor any other book whilst playing ... and mind ye, he's also neurotic and quirky and inexplicably fixated on dodecahedra. |

Thanks guys. I'm learning all kinds of fun stuff. Like Word won't allow some fonts to go down to a 6 pt. Now I have to go back and change each and every little teensy-tiny little tag. I have no intention of printing this, it is just an editable sheet for use in a chat game. Although, if it comes out good enough I suppose I could convert it to PDF. I also find Dropbox an invaluable resource for this type of game. I experimented with Gmail and Google Docs and this works just as well.
Dodecahedra? Dodecahedrae? Dodecahydra?
Wow! A 3-ring binder? With hundreds of pages? That is neurotic. Still it is worlds better than some of my old players that would show up with a crumpled cocktail napkin in their pocket. |

Impressive for MS-Word. I did much the same for a 3.5E sheet. I used a combination of MS-Word to set up the general page design, then imported it to Adobe (CS-4) and Acrobat Pro for touchup and functionality accordingly. It works very well.
Looks like you're well on your way to a nice looking design. Having been through the process I mirror the concern about printing and ink levels. For PnP use, I've found mostly white with limited color areas work best - are easier to read and easier to distribute. Since you specified for an online game, as long as you're keeping your character sheet in digital format, color can work to your advantage.
Good Hunting!
Edit: Just finished playing around with the functionality. If you finalize it through Acrobat Pro it will allow you to "READ ONLY" or "LOCK" the cells so that when tabbing between locations, you don't highlight and accidentally edit one of your box labels. It also allows you to select and code your fonts to "automatically size" depending upon what is entered, and can be made to automatically calculate various fields which, if coded properly, can drastically reduce the time spent updating your character sheet. Example: Have a temp DEX penalty? Enter it in the penalty box for DEX and the entire sheet recalculates, including updating all other applicable boxes such as AC or DEX-based skill modifiers. |
