I also seem to recall a lizard-man type creature (Firenewt, maybe) that rode on another kind of lizard that spit fire from it's cheeks. I distinctly remember them from 2e, but they may have gotten a mention in Serpent Kingdoms or maybe the Web Enhancement. Some piece of them should not be -too- hard to find.

Very good. I'll certainly include both.

And I recall the creatures in question too. They even live in the Unapproachable East.

Since smoke powder is prone to explosions and explosions are measured in the amount of concussive force they generate (eg: x feet / second), I might suggest some sort of FORCE addition to the formula along with the fire, smoke, destruction, stability portions mentioned above.

Given your player's penchant for harvesting carcasses for parts with alchemical potential and what appears to be your desire to keep the components on the rare side, I found a couple of possibilities.

Amethyst Dragon parts would, IMO, be ideal to add to the mixture. Their breath weapon is a blast of force so adding something akin to Amethyst Dragon Larynx - powdered, crushed, minced, etc. would be a great component.

For an even more difficult to obtain component, the 'lozenge' that they can spit once per day - which explodes with concussive force upon impact (makes me think of nitro glycerine) - would be ideally suited to this endeavor. How to process it though could be an experience in itself since trying to crush/powder it could cause it to detonate.

Good Hunting!

It just came to me. Giant Strider, but I remember an even older source. Creature Catalogue maybe.
