It's little weird that this PrC requires the drow to be LE, when Lolth is all about Chaos... I could understand that for example a Monk worshiping her could be Lawful, but although the Dread Fangs don't get any divine casting, they do get divine insights and gifts from Lolth herself, so... I just don't understand this requirement.

This probably has to do with the fact that the Dread Fangs are essentially servant assassins to the matriarchs, and chaotic evil people probably wouldn't be all that good at the job, aside from that the Dread Fangs have also been known to make their killings as quick as possible, leaving the cruel and sadistic ways of their drow brothers and sisters behind, their career also requires a certain ammount of emotional detachment you wouldn't find in a CE person. Another thing that might explain their LE requirement, is that the constant voice and whispers of Lolth in their minds would probably drive them into rampages if they were CE. The mental discipline of a lawful alignment is probably one of the reasons they don't lose their sanity. As for the divine gifts, any divine servant only needs to be within a single step or so of his/her deity's alignment, so Lolth worshipers can be of any Evil alignment as well as Chaotic Neutral really, and still recieve blessings from her. |

| But Lolth is CE. How is LE within one step? |

That's just me being dense again, I should've worded it differently I think. You can think of it like this, for a Cleric to recieve divine spells from a deity, they must be within one step (CE, NE or CN for Lolth priests), but it's very likely that she'd be able to grant LE drow blessings as well, since they're still Evil. You have to remember that drow society 'is' sort of lawful, in a very chaotic and evil way. So it's not impossible that Dread Fangs are Lawful only in order for them to appear as part of the governing power of the drow, the following is from the PrC itself:
"They are a visible manifestation of the theocratic power that governs the dark elves,..."
If you've ever read the Drizzt novels while he was still in Menzoberranzan, you'll know that drow society does take on a lawful face, with rules and the works. Dread Fangs might just be the enforcers of this 'lawful' face, meaning they themselves would have to be Lawful in order to do their jobs right. |
