OK, the point of this I'm researching which spells are the most popular. There are so many options. You can use any source, arcane and divine, 2nd and 3rd edition. For example arcane

0 Mending
1 Chromatic Orb (2E), Grease, Color Spray
2 Baleful Transposition (SC)
3 Strangling Hair (Ultimate Magic)
4 Laeral's Gesture (Seven Sistery)
5 Teleport, Permanency
6 Call of the Twilight Defender (Dragon Magic)
7 Limited Wish
8 Mind Blank, Mordy's Wonderful Brothel (Nymphology)
9 Time Stop

And so on for divine

I only played 2nd Ed, but Permanency was an 8th level spell was it not?

Permanency is a 5th level spell in 3rd/3.5e D&D.

Something like this:

0 - Prestidigitation (all those little tricks)
1 - Sleep (good for putting people down without killing them)
2 - Invisibility (stealthy)
3 - Lightning Bolt (because sometimes, you just need to strike somebody down with a thunderbolt of retribution)
4 - Evard's Black Tentacles (the ultimate in controlling the field)
5 - Telekinesis (many, many uses)
6 - Disintegrate (shout "EXTERMINATE!" while using it for extra effect)
7 - Teleport Without Error (teleport, except always on target)
8 - Polymorph Any Object (undoubtedly the best of the polymorph line)
9 - Wish (otherwise known as "reality does what you want")

"Not unlike a certain travelogue author with whom I am unfortunately acquainted." ~Elminster

may I post? I'd rather post psionic powers

0 - Analyze Device (Zobeck Gazeteer)
1 - Tireless (Zobeck Gazeteer)
2 - Suffer the Flesh (Magic of Eberron)
3 - Jalartan's Miraculum (Wizard's Spell 2?)
4 - Double Dimension (Hyperconscious)
5 - Telekinesis or Autocrossbow (Steamworks)
6 - Belorigar's Baldric (Secrets of the Magister)
7 - Spellmaster (Arcana Unearthed)
8 - Create Demiplane
9 - I don't know too many good ones, wish probably cause it's the most versatile

I'm not into divine

If we stick to the more commonly known/non-Chosen only type spells:

1. Magic Missile
2. Web
3. Fireball
4. Fireshield
5. Cone of Cold
6. Chain Lightning
7. Limited Wish
8. Lightning Ring
9. Chain Contingency

Can we guess which school of magic I like best? :)

Alamanther's Return and the original description of dragonshape (later descriptions for the spell were oddly nerfed, particularly for the spell's level) were favorites of mine. I believe both are 9th level.

Never really done a level-by-level breakdown of favored spells, myself.

It is cruel to ask for only 1 spell per level, even if I restrict to arcane spells. Still, here goes:

0- Detect Magic (aka detect magical traps)
1- Magic Missile (simple and effective)
2- Combust (10d8 and easy to alter with metamagic feats at higher level, oh and no save!)
3- Fireball (now that haste is changed to a regular power level)
4- Stoneskin (that could be the most important spell for mid-level)
5- Teleport (Once you start teleporting around, you feel like a real mage)
6- Greater Dispel Magic (especially as a DM against overbuffed PCs)
7- Spell Turning (few spells offer as much satisfaction)
8- Mind Blank (life-saver against many foes)
9- Time stop (there's other 9th level spells?)

honorable mention to dimensional anchor, no more fleeing mages!

Actually it's better if you post more than 1 spell per level, arcane, divine, psionic or whatever

If my players are any sort of indicator, then the most popular spells would be magic missile, fireball, lightning, chain lightning, disintegrate, and similar. Basically, anything which is guaranteed to cause damage, preferably lots of damage, regardless of whether the target saves or resists. Of course, such things as mending, strength, continual light, levitate, invisibility, fly, haste, stoneskin, and globe of invulnerability are standard adventuring mage fare.

I'm personally fond of dispel magic, emotion, the various polymorph spells, and any kind of monster summoning I can get my hands on.

Neither have I. And I don't think it would really matter anyway. Most of my favourite spells are either homebrew castings, or tweaks on classic spells from official sources that would undoubtedly be unrecognized by most.

3rd. Most of them are cantrips, though a few formerly 1st-level spells were demoted to 0 level.

I've always liked Cantrips, they are just so much fun

I think they had a good write up in the original Unearthed Arcana book...

I can remember chuckling at the Fire Finger spell's verbal components, Zip-po or Ron-son

1E Unearthed Arcana introduced 0-level cantrips. Some were written into early Realmslore.

Cantrips disappeared in 2E, but were subsequently reintroduced in the "2.5E" rules, alongside 0-level orisons.

There was a Dragon article called "The Little Wish" which did something great with cantrips -- it made them a proficiency. In my opinion, going that route captured the flavor of cantrips much better than any edition of D&D has.

Here's my favorite divine spells

0- Detect Poison (never accept a drink from a noble without this)
1- Remove Fear (even at high level, still as useful)
2- Cure Moderate Wounds (seems basic, and it is, but still the one I use the most. Mostly between battles)
3- Mass Lesser Vigor (best hp-healed/cost ratio for a group when there's no rush)
4- Divine Power (obviously)
5- Raise dead (if you don't lose a level) or Righteous Wrath of the Faythful
6- Heal (the party's favorite spell)
7- Destruction (instant death or 10d6 damage? yes please)
8- Fire Storm (just to show off with the party's wizard. Who's blasting stuff now?)
9- Mass Heal or quickened level 5 spells

honorable mention to Bolt of glory, which is the sole reason I'm no longer using fiends so much in my high level campaigns.

That depends on which cantrips you're referring to. Some are kind of neat, while others are just, plainly, window-dressing for wizards.

And this was part of why I liked the proficiency idea: you picked the cantrip as you were casting it.

Since cantrips are supposed to be little more than conveniences and magical exercises before learning real spells, it's never made sense to me to squeeze them into the same rigid system as real spells.

I've always wanted to connect the proficiency-cantrip system with those old 80's Gygaxian cantrips from DRAGON issues #59 and 60. Gaining proficiency in casting Yawn... Neato!
