I opened this thread specifically to mention one in particular. I remember reading it in Ask Ed, but I keep seeing it in Brimstone's sig and keep thinking about it:

"Ed would have given us a Mirt doing nasty mercantile swindling in the streets and back alleys novel, a Dabron Sashenstar exploring hitherto unchartered wilderness novel, a novel from the point of view of elder dragons trying to fight off human incursions into their domains novel, a dwarves fighting internally to either promote or resist change that's being forced upon them by humans, a "what life is like down in Undermountain" novel, a "traitor amongst The Simbul's apprentices" novel, a "growing up as an enslaved, beautiful, ambitious female in Thay" novel, and so on and on." (03 May 2010)

These are the sorts of stories I want to write, or see Ed write! The Realms, to me, shouldn't be an earth-shaking, gods-warring, epic battleground, but a place where a thousand stories are told, with thousands of different characters engaged in equally significant (to them) personal struggles.

(I particularly want to write the Thayan slave one, but this is PG-13 here. )

Are there other things Ed has said that you find particularly inspiring, cool, or thought-provoking? Here on the boards, elsewhere on the net, or in real life?

Cheers

Sure.
In real life, one of my favourites of Ed's utterances is:

Do everything you do with love, and you won't regret it, no matter how badly things turn out.

. . . And another is:

If you don't enjoy life, everyone else can tell. If you don't reflect on your life, you'll hardly notice it happening.

I could list hundreds, but these two come to mind again and again.

love,

This is a great idea, Erik!

The one that immediately comes to mind when I'm reading and forming opinions on books... "Remember to always apply Elminster’s Rule: one reader’s masterpiece is the next reader’s complete waste of trees."

I like this one from Ed, uttered at an Ad Astra panel years ago:

The one who designs games to make money is all too often doomed-to-be-disappointed. The one who designs games with love, to have fun with friends, is very often made rich indeed. I'll play those odds.

Still love that philosophy.

When I first met Ed, back at LehighCon in the early/mid-90's, I had to come straight from work to make it to the con, and didn't have a chance to change out of my uniform (I worked for the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission back then). When I finally got my chance to talk to him while he was signing autographs, I muttered something about my state of dress and complained about how I couldn't take off work to fully enjoy the convention. He said something to the effect of "Don't apologize, this is just a game, real life always comes first."

He then signed my Elminster Spellfire card, changing the rules so that Elminster was immune to every spell except "Turtle Soup".

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Argh...DROOL...I would LOVE for that to come out. Just now getting to the Knights of Myth Drannor series and the beginnings in Espar are making me so happy. I need more Ed books.

I met him at an RA Salvatore book signing here in Toronto recently for Guantlgrym, and had him sign my Elminster Must Die copy. He's so awesome, I was a bit star struck though and could only just thank him for inventing the Realms repeatedly. Next time I'll do better.

You might not be Ed, but these are words I love to read. Thank you very much.

I've lost track of recent realmslore, since my campaigns are still in the 1370ies. :-)

Oh, there have been many. This is a great idea, Erik.

But I'll share one from an interview we did together just a couple weeks ago for the Dead Robots Society podcast. At the very end of the interview, Ed's talking about the process of putting together an anthology, but this could just as easily be advice about anything else in life, or even life in general:

"The main thing is, whenever you think 'Oh, what do I do now?', think 'I want to feel good about this a year from now. Am I doing the right thing, am I treating people right?' You don’t want to walk away thinking, 'Oh, if it hadn’t been for...' 'Oh, if I’d only...' No. Make it something you can be happy about in your memories."

I am honored, sir!

And indeed, I am not Ed, nor could be. I can only strive to be that good.

Cheers

His last sentences from his Paizo Blog interview

quote:
Don't tell me you don't have time to write your great novel or design your new game. I have been writing professionally for 45 years (yes, I got paid for some of the stuff I did when I was six), and during that time went through school and university, held down a full-time job for more than twenty years (including a dozen years of commuting 120 miles to work and 120 miles home, six days a week), have worked part time for more than a decade when I wasn't full time... and "on the side" have managed to write or co-write (and co-writing takes longer) about 140 books (not to mention contributing to dozens more, and turning out hundreds of articles and columns and newspaper stories, poems and a play and script or three). So the "I don't have time" argument cuts little ice with me. I don't expect you to produce 140 books—just impress me with one. To begin with. ;}

I'm still trying to find new excuses

Ha ha.
For me, one of the most inspiring things Ed has said was at a panel at FanExpo this past weekend:

Regret little facets and moments of things you did or tried. It's way better than regretting things you never got around to doing, or avoided trying, or thought would be too much trouble. All of those people who tell you to live each day of your life as if it was your last? Well, one day they'll be right.

Heh. And let it be said: Ed in person is charming and HILARIOUS. :}
