Hey, folks!
In case anyone hadn’t noticed, there’s a little book out right now from Dragon Moon Press called When the Hero Comes Home. Edited by Gabrielle Harbowy and Ed Greenwood, this splendid collection contains 19 short stories examining what happens when a legendary hero (or perhaps, not-so-legendary) returns from the great adventure. The book is available through the publisher’s website (Kindle or Epub/print), as well as at Amazon (Kindle/paperback). (I've made the various book types click-ity above, for ease of access.)
And why might Candlekeep scribes care, you ask? Well, let me tell you!
Not only does When the Hero Comes Home boast as one of its co-editors the estimable Ed Greenwood, the creator of the Forgotten Realms, but it also has a story from Ed. And it has tales from Realms favorites Erik Scott de Bie and Rosemary Jones. And it has an introduction from former Realms fiction editrix extraordinaire Susan J. Morris.

My story connects to a forthcoming epic fantasy series. More to come, as I've got the info.
Outside of my Realms companions, I'm particularly stoked about Jim Hines's story. If you guys haven't read Jim's stuff, you really should. He is an awesome writer.
Also, Todd McCaffrey? Jay Lake? Shannon Page? How did these wondrous things happen?

I think Jim just finished the first book of the LIBRIOMANCER series recently and it's not been put out to print yet, Sage, so you've not missed much (yet).
However, do be sure to pick up his GOBLIN HERO or his "Fantasy Princesses as Charlie's Angels" series (starting with STEPSISTER SCHEME) as great reads, all.
And I'm not just saying that as he's another local Michigan author to whose signings I show up. ;)

In fact, Jim's story in HERO features Jig, his goblin protagonist, and is a good taste of what his Goblin Quest series is like. It's good fun.

Do we have word one way or another on Jim Hines? The last time I saw him, it was at GenCon, but that was a few years ago. Totally need to hang out with that guy some more.

I went on to Amazon Tuesday, checked my wish list and was happy to see this was available for purchase! Added it to my cart and was ready to plunk down my $19.95 when out of the corner of my eye I noticed the kindle version was $3.99!!! What a steal.....
I read it in about two settings....enjoyed all the tales and was blown away by a handful.
Oathbreaker....WOW!.......Erik unleashed upon his own world with all that elbow room for his lanky frame to write in, Awesome!....I can't wait to buy Shadow of the Winter King
One and Twenty Summers by our Own Brian Cortijo......great quick story with interesting characters, I would love to read about the blacksmith's time in the war...
Coward by Todd McCaffery ....first of his work I have read.....won't be the last. An interesting tale about truth!
Ashes of the Bonfire Queen....Rosemary Jones...that's enough for me, but I really liked this story and would love to see it continued. |

Got my "copy" the same way.
What a GREAT collection of stories.
Everyone will have their personal faves, of course, and the de Bie, Jones, Frey, and Buchanan stories happen to be mine, but I wanted to praise the two co-editors for smaller in scale but deftly written stories. Gabrielle Harbowy is now on my list of people to watch (I've taken to reading her blog, and am going to track down that Cthulhu erotica!! story of hers), and Ed's story - - aside from its central theme, which would have been verboten back then - - reads like right-up-the-middle core fantasy from three decades back, as written by one of the masters.
This is a book I'm going to be rereading often, so I'll be ordering a physical copy, too.

When I wrote this story, I didn't know I'd be the anchor for the anthology. I just wrote what was right for the story, and I think it turned out pretty well.

Also, to echo RW for a second: For those who liked "Oathbreaker," there is an entire epic fantasy series that this story ties into, called Shadow of the Winter King, a tale of love, hatred, and vengeance. It's currently looking for a publisher, but I'll announce more as soon as I can.
If you're really stoked about the story, do feel free to post reviews of "Oathbreaker" and such online (on blogs, facebook, Amazon, etc). I'm also going to blog about it at some point.
