I read in Dragon Magazine (i think about issue 312 or something, which I somehow missed !?!) that the new D&D Minatures series is to contain expansion packs in the future for Forgotten Realms creatures!!

I guess only creatures will appear in the collection, rather than any characters.

Ive never been a minature collector but ill have to get these as its FR! The only problem with these sets is that theyre random and it could take many boxes (and much cash!) to get those last few that are missing and probably end up with dozens of duplicate figures!

And the other downside is that they're plastic and pre-painted...

If they want to make it unique FR, they should do the characters not as much the monsters since there is so much overlap with other settings... true there are unique FR critters, and they might do a couple of those.

Yeah i agree with you there, Mumadar.

Also, one thing that I really didnt like is that the article I read on these minatures is that they stated that the QUALITY of the painting is less on the common figures than on the rare figures! The quality should remain the same, and be of a high standard, throughout the whole collection!

Yes, I remember reading the article (I know Rad, I should have already said something...). I think I'll stick to using my Warhammer miniatures in my FR games though...

You could be right....

There is a reason though, why I prefer my miniatures. From what I have seen so far, the models that I have in my collection are of far greater quality that those presented as D&D miniatures so far. Also, I can mix and combine most of the models in my sets (pre-construction) to create any race, creature, or anything else I wish.

In fact I have a nice looking Pit Fiend that lights up sitting on my desktop at work. It was crafted from the LotR:FotR set that includes the Balrog. It took some modifications, and a lot of red and orange paint, but I think it looks really good.

Ack, once I get some, they'll be used.
I don't have the time, the inclination or the money to pay and paint real miniatures, so my groups have alternatingly been using Mage Knight and D&D miniatures figures, usually in conjunction with chart paper.
I do agree they should focus on characters instead of creatures. The first set was generic D&D however, and had no characters except the iconics(Lidda, etc.), and they were included. My hopes are high. I think Wizards will have a minor riot if they don't release a Drizzt figure...

Are the Mage Knights models any good Arivia?. Do they work well with the D&D miniatures?. I'm just curious, because I found Wizkid's Mechwarrior models to be of poorer quality when compared to my Battletech Ironwind miniatures. I just thought that maybe the Mage Knight miniatures may have the same 'problem'.

*Dodges storm of questions*

I thought you were the Sage, not some hyperactive kid...

Seriously, the Mage Knight minis do work well. The major problem is finding miniatures that can reasonably depict D&D creatures. I can't say how well they interact, as both groups I have that use the Mage Knight miniatures haven't used miniatures since the D&D ones were released...

They're of okay quality. The plastic used is not very strong, and can cause problems with appendages, weaponry, etc. breaking off.
I have the one pewter miniature I have and one Mage Knight one on one of my bookshelves right now, and I can tell you the pewter looks much better, even with my despicable painting job.

I bought 3 packs of these miniatures earlier today, the "Entry pack" containing 16 minis and 2 Harbinger Expansion packs. I was wary of purchasing these items, but I asked my local Hobby Store own, about them. He is a keen RPGist and War gamer, so has a high standards for miniatures. "For the price you are paying- less than a pound per miniature they are great quality.”
After purchasing the packs I must say, for what your paying there excellent, true they aren’t the most detailed, but paying less than a pound for a miniature is a lot cheaper than say games workshop miniatures. The fact that they are prepainted, adds to the value for money. True these will never live up to the scrutiny of Professional Painters but for people like me, who don't have the time, to paint they are a godsend.
There are a few bad points about the miniatures though, here in Britain they are hard to come by I only found them available in two shops, and even then I could only find the Entry pack in one shop. Another bad point is that the miniatures are random. Yes they are divided up into 3 categories, rare uncommon and common, this seems a little low on WOTC part, but when they make Random card games what do you expect its the next step!
This is what I got in my three packs:

Rare:
Medusa
Mind Flayer
Orge

Uncommon:
Werewolf
Half-Orc Assassin
2x Azer Raiders
Drow Archer
Lizardfolk
Troglodyte Zombie
Ember
Evoker's Apprentice
Devis
Axe Sister

Common:
Crested Felldrake
Kobold Warrior
Orc Warrior
Half Orc Fighter
Ghoul
Wolf
Man-at-Arms
2x Zombie
2x Wolf Skeleton
2x Human Bandits
2x Kuo-Toa
3x Orc Spearfighter

Overall I'd say that these miniatures are great value for money, well i'd say this if they weren’t random. Honestly I think this is another WOTC idea to try and Rip us off- However just remember, before you all slate WOTC, they are a huge multinational company- that’s what Multinational companies are for, spreading capitalist ideas and Ripping the consumer off!

Well my group as amassed many many many of these minis. We can fill a battle map and then some with all of the Harbringer minis we have bought. They are great for statistical reasons. We are currently working on our Dragoneye collection. We mainly use them for monsters and NPCs and such. We still use metal minis for the PCs. Its a good investment if you can get the entire group to contribute.

What are the 'Mind Flayers' like Elrond?...I haven't heard too many encouraging remarks about their design or appearance so far...

Hail Sage
I like the Mind flayer, mainly because I havent seen too many models representing them, and the ones I have see are ancient ones for the 80s which tend to look cartoony. This mini is in my opinion very Mind Flayer like he's tall, thin, and has his tencicles. te colour scheme is a bit crazy pinks, purples and maroons, but hey! Over the next few days I'll try and post some picutures of him.
I hope this was helpfull

Actually it was helpful...thank you...

It's funny, but when I'd first heard that Mind Flayers would be included in the new expansion packs, my own thoughts immediately went back to those miniatures of the early late 80's as well...Shudder... . I'm glad that's not the case with these...

Indeed, might I say the 80's representations left much to be desired.......

The Chosen of Vhaeraun
"Nature is governed by certain immutable rules. By virtue of claw and fang, the lion will always triumph over the goat.Given time, the pounding of the sea will wear away the stone. And when dark elves mingle with the lighter races, the offspring invariably take after the dark parent. It is all much the same. That which is greater shall prevail. Our numbers increase steadily, both through birth and conquest. The dark elves are the dominant race, so ordained by the gods." Ka'Narlist of the Ilythiiri.

Thanks alot for the link Darth. There are some minatures that I see here which I like the look of. However there are alot that I don't like. Including
  • Githzerai
  • Aspect of Bane
  • Snig the Axe
  • Zhentarim Fighter
  • Cultist of the Dragon
Perhaps I'm just being too picky however.

But in my opinion there are alot of very good minatures there... Ach we'll just need to wait and see!
