Today is Free RPG Day... So, as a dedicated lover of free swag, I went to both of my local game stores. I did make purchases at both; at one I picked up the blister of Lady Aiyanna and Master Holt (making the store owner realize he'd forgotten to buy them for himself the night before! ), and at the other, I picked up a Pathfinder module, Academy of Secrets, written by by our own Brian Cortijo.

At my second stop, the store owner told me to go ahead and help myself to the red rack in the back of the store... I don't know if it was because I've been a customer of his since the 2E Tome of Magic came out (that was the first thing I bought from him), or because I was making a purchase on Free RPG Day, or what...

The shelf was covered with a lot of stuff; it looked mostly like stuff he'd been unable to move before today. He'd told me to help myself, so I did -- and picked out a stack of stuff almost 4 inches thick! I just tallied up the cover prices of all this stuff, and it came out to just over $250!

I cleaned up, thinks I.

Here's the list of stuff I got from that red rack, most of which is third-party D20 stuff.

Hyperconscious (Someone recently mentioned this one as a great source for psionics; I'd been trying to find a copy on the cheap!)
The Witch of Loch-Durnan
The Book of Roguish Luck (Wolfgang Baur goodness!)
Chaos Magic
Blood Magic
Tarot Magic
Skreyn's Register: The Bonds of Magic (a nifty book of spell-slinging NPCs, by Sean K Reynolds)
Beyond the Walls
Mindscapes (I love psionic stuff!)
Bastion of Faith (an old 2E TSR adventure; I wasn't going to argue the price! )
Queen of Lies (for Ptolus, a nifty setting with some cool ideas, by Monte Cook)
Combat Assault Vehicle (a kind of quicker, simpler BattleTech; I already have the book, but one of my friends does not)
Secrets of the Magister (Ed goodness! I grabbed it to replace my own copy; depending on the condition of the one I had, I may toss it up on eBay)
Ancestral Vault (a product for Nyambe, which I've heard good things about. And again, can't argue the price!)

I love these three books -- especially the first two, as they provide rich arcane options which can [and will] spice up the magic in your campaigns. Tarot Magic, I found, was less-than-stellar... but I'm biased toward the older RAVENLOFT Tarot deck.

I've only glaced at Skreyn's Register: The Bonds of Magic, but I liked what I saw, and I'm a fan of SKR's stuff.

Combat Assault Vehicle, usually just called CAV, follows a similar premise to BattleTech: it's the future, mankind has spread out into space, and not finding anyone else out there, has contructed giant stompy robots to fight each other with. You still take turns trying to kill each other, but the gameplay is greatly simplified, and the CAVs themselves have a limited self-repair option. I played a demo game a few years ago, and what basically gave me the game was that my opponent opted to spend a turn trying to repair his CAVs, and I kept up the fire, instead.

If BattleTech is chess, CAV is checkers.

Some of the minis look pretty nifty, and they're fairly close to BTech minis in scale -- which means you can use most of them as BTech minis, if you want. I believe there were only three books, the main one that I got today, and two Journals of Recognition (think: Technical Readout 30XX from BTech). I'm fairly certain it's now a footnote in gaming history.

I just picked up the the following Free RPG Day materials:
  • Pathfinder: We Be Goblins!
  • Black Crusade: Broken Chains
  • WoD: A Nightmare at Hill Manor
  • All Flesh Must Be Eaten: The Walking Dead
  • Dungeon Crawl Classics: Adventure Starter
  • Dragon Age: Quickstart Guide

Also, my wife and I both grabbed new sets of dice because all RPG materials were buy one get one 1/2 off. I didn't get to do any of the actual games because we ended up celebrating Father's Day a day early since both my dad and my little brother were in town, and they wanted to go see Green Lantern.

This is the introductory teaser adventure for the upcoming Black Crusade RPG, is it not?

What's it like? I've been heavily anticipating this game, because I'm eager for "fleshing" out Chaos-characters.

Sadly, this year, I was well aware of the date, but I've been fighting chronic fatigue/pain for the past month, and knew I wasn't up to a long drive to snag swag.

One usually has far more to fear from the soft-spoken wizard with a blade and well-worn boots than from the boisterous one in the ivory tower.

Yeah, I am jealous of that, as well. Though a couple of them I have already gotten a hold of copies of via the interwebs.

It looks interesting. The four pre-made characters includes two chaos space marines, a fallen techpriest, and a human. I have not had time to look at much more than that so far.

About the fallen techpriest... does he belong to the Dark Mechanicus, or is he simply a Heretek?

This is the adventure that originally came with the Gloomwrought boxed set, yes?

I only saw one D&D thing, and from first glance, it wasn't Shadowfell-related... I could be mistaken, though. And I somehow failed to grab that.

My little brother picked up a copy, and then when I saw who wrote it and what it was about, I kicked myself for not grabbing it.

It was originally going to be part of the Shadowfell set, but was excised for length reasons and released as its own individual product (i.e., at Free RPG Day).

I picked it up. A few people were disappointed that it wasn't an 'adventure'.....which made me sigh.

I hope Candlekeep continues to be the friendly forum of fellow Realms-lovers that it has always been, as we all go through this together. If you don’t want to move to the “new” Realms, that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with either you or the “old” Realms. Goodness knows Candlekeep, and the hearts of its scribes, are both big enough to accommodate both. If we want them to be.

We had only one shop in our area participate this year, due to the increased price the stores had to pay for each assortment. They had a limit of two items. All I was able to get was:

  • Pathfinder: We Be Goblins!

  • Dungeon Crawl Classics: Adventure Starter

I'd like to hear what other folks thought of the other freebie offerings, especially Dragon Age: Quickstart Guide and the WotC Shadowfell piece. Are they worth trying to get from e-Bay?

I wanted to write a full adventure in Histaven, but was content leaving it as an adventure site.

I think the story lends itself to a particular adventure, but there's a lot that can be done with it.
